One by product of the early spring weather is a severe lack of practice time for area ball clubs.  That lack of preparation is particularly hard on young teams, none more so than the 2015 edition of Cardinal baseball.  After a hard won victory over Gonzaga last week, the redbirds have struggled at the plate recently and paid for it with a pair of lopsided losses, 14-0 with O’Connell and 11-1 with talented St Johns.

On the heels of a shutout to a powerhouse Paul VI club, Coach Rex Thomas looked for a rebound in the Bishop O’Connell game. “We bounced back after a tough loss and played very well in the Gonzaga game.  I was thinking we could see that again with O’Connell, but it didn’t happen.”

St Johns, along with the Panthers, are preseason favorites in the always tough WCAC.  They looked the part when the visited Bishop Ireton’s Frank Mann Field, scoring three times in the first and methodically building on the lead enroute to the win.

Saturday’s visit to DeMatha was postponed because of field conditions, so the Cardinals have some time to regroup before renewing the season Tuesday when Good Counsel visits Bishop Ireton. First pitch is set for 5:30pm.
