Coach Terri Pearson’s Cardinals overcame cold, rainy weather in Richmond Saturday to thump host St Catherine’s 9-2 in the annual North – South Challenge.  The first game of the tourney was washed out as maintenance crews worked the fields for much of the morning to save some of the tournament’s games.

The Cardinals scored early and often against St Catherine’s in the win.  Molly Jeffers led the Cardinals, getting on base each of her five trips to the plate. Sophomore hurler Erin Rockwell got the win for Ireton.  Jeffers joined Rockwell and Angela Kammen on the all tournament team representing Bishop Ireton.

The Cardinals returned to WCAC play on Monday, hosting Good Counsel at Luckett Field.  The home team played “small ball” with bunts and heads up base running to build a 2-0 lead into the third. Rockwell wiggled out of jam in 4th when Good Counsel plated a run, but stranded a pair.

Ireton could not capitalize on a bases loaded, two-out situation in the bottom half of the inning and the Cardinals nursed a 2-1 lead into the 4th.

From there, the floodgates opened. Timely hitting by the Falcons, some costly errors and the game suddenly got away from the home squad and Good Counsel had a 9-2 lead on their way to a one-sided 14-2 final.

No time to dwell on the game as the Cardinals return to action Tuesday, this time traveling to Oakton and call on Flint Hill School. First pitch is set for 4:15.
