The evening started with a ceremonial basketball being presented to senior Alex Stipano for scoring her 1,000th point in the Cardinals’ game at St Johns. The celebration of offense was about as much offense as either team could generate in the opening period as both squads struggled to score from anywhere on the floor.

After a 7-4 opening quarter, the teams settled down to basketball in the second period. Stipano added a pair of threes to her DMV-leading total and the Cardinals headed into intermission leading 23-18.

Midway through the third, it was Holy Cross finding their offensive stride to take a 28-26 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter.  Shannon Corridon hit back-to-back threes, part of her 15 points for evening, to return the lead to Bishop Ireton at 31-30.  The 10-2 run would balloon the margin to 36-30 before the visitors got a much needed time out.  Corridon would add six rebounds to the stat sheet in one of the junior’s best games of the season.

With the Cardinals leading 38-33 heading to the final act, the Cardinals pressed the visitors with devastating results and by the 3:59 mark in the final period, Ireton held an 11-point lead at 48-37.  The Tartans would close the gap to 50-44 in the final minute but could muster no more offense.

The win improves the Cardinals to 13-13 overall, 4-12 in the rugged WCAC, while Holy Cross fell to 4-16, 0-13 in the WCAC.  The squad hosts St Mary’s Ryken on Feb 10th and Good Counsel on Friday, Feb 13th, a senior night affair to close the regular season schedule.

News and Notes:

– Coach Jason Harris’ squad will host a play-in game to open the 2015 WCAC championship tournament and likely will host at least one state playoff contest.

– Stipano’s 1000 points is the most career points by a Cardinal since Beckie Fernandez (2006) set a school career record with 1856 career points. The Ireton alum went on to play 4 years at Longwood University, graduating as the team captain.

– Last VISAA Division I poll had the Cardinals sitting at #4, just a couple points higher than Liberty Christian and Flint Hill. Top four teams receive byes, then host a quarterfinal playoff game.  PVI is at the top, DJO is third.

– WCAC and VISAA playoff games will be $5/person at the door. No season ticket or other passes are honored for these games.
