In spite of a solid performance from Nick Schmelzer with nine points, the Cardinals fell to Gonzaga 81-53.
The Eagles jumped out to a commanding 26-12 lead after one period of play and continued to pull away in the second stanza, retiring to the locker room with a 49-26 bulge.
An 18-12 third quarter pushed the margin to 67-38 after three and the reserves cleaned up in the final period where Ireton outscored the home team by a 15-14 count.
In addition to Schmelzer, the Cardinals also got help from Quintin Gilchrest (8 points), Jeremy Guillaud (7 points), Michael Everett (6 points), Darius Hines (6 points), Jamie Pasha (5 points), Kyle Bethea (5 points), Joey Hamer (4 points) and Chase Hill (3 points). The Cardinals finished the game with 22 rebounds (seven offensive/15 defensive).
Eleven Eagles scored in the contest, led by Sam Miller’s 13 and Eddie Scott with 11.
The Cardinals return home for their regular season finale with Archbishop Carroll before closing the campaign with trips to St Mary’s Ryken on Feb 10 and the season ending game at Good Counsel’s Kane Gym on Friday Feb 13. WCAC playoffs begin on February 19th.
