Junior Nick Schmelzer drained 3 three-pointers at #1 DeMatha Friday.

It was a festive atmosphere as the host Stags staged a 50th anniversary party for the School’s milestone win over Power Memorial and a young Lew Alcindor Friday. When the varsity game finally began, top-ranked DeMatha showed it wasn’t distracted by the pregame hype in an 84-44 win Friday night in Hyattsville.

The Stags started fast against the young Ireton squad and bolted to a 27-6 advantage after one quarter.  The Cardinals found their offense in the second quarter but the DeMatha lead grew to 43-19 by halftime.

DeMatha kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter and the margin ballooned to 63-27 as both squads substituted liberally in the fourth period.

Nick Schmelzer again led Ireton (6-18, 0-14) with 11 points, including 3 three-point baskets, while Michael Everett and Quintin Gilcrest each added seven. Kyle Bethea, Joey Hamer, and Darius Hines scored 4. DeMatha (20-1, 11-0) was lead by junior Nate Darling with 21 points, among 11 Stags to score on the evening.

The Cardinals did see their JV team surprise the young Stags, 51-45 to sweep that regular season series with DeMatha, perhaps a first for the Alexandria school.

The Cardinals return to action Tuesday when St Johns visits Godley Gym for Bishop Ireton’s senior night, their next to last regular season home game. They will farewell Jeremy Guillaud, their lone senior on the 2014-15 squad. Bishop Ireton ends the regular season at Gonzaga Friday, returns Sunday, Feb 8th for a rescheduled match with Archbishop Carroll before ending the campaign at St Mary’s Ryken on Tuesday and at Good Counsel on Friday, Feb 13th.  WCAC postseason action begins on February 19th.
