For three periods, Bishop Ireton’s girls’ basketball team matched Elizabeth Seton bucket for bucket, tied heading into the final quarter. But a 22-7 blitz by the visitors gave Seton a 51-36 WCAC win in Alexandria Friday.
Alex Stipano, the Cardinals’ sharp-shooting guard, drained 3 three-point shots in the opening stanza, scoring 9 of Ireton’s first 10 points as the home team clinged to a 10-9 lead after one.
Shannon Corridon and Paige Russell found the range from beyond the arc as the game progressed, the teams heading to the locker rooms with Seton edging ahead on a layup at the buzzer, 24-22.
The third period was a defensive struggle and the clubs tied at 29-29. Whatever it was, the 4th quarter awakened the Roadrunners. Seton burst to a 16-7 run in the first 4:16 of the final act and would shut out the home team for the final nearly 4 minutes to win by the final 51-36 margin.
Seton senior Raven Fox led all scorers in the game with 24, her 5th consecutive 20+ point effort while the Cardinals’ were led by Alex Stipano with 14. CeCe Leone added six, Michelle Montgomery and Aiden Phillips had 5, and Russell and Corridon three each.
Stipano now sits with a DMV-leading 68 3-point baskets on the season, and only six points shy of 1,000 points for her career. The Cardinal guard has her chance to break the barrier Tuesday when Bishop Ireton (12-11, 3-10) visits Gallagher Gym and St Johns (10-9, 6-5). Tipoff is 7:30.
