The Gonzaga Eagles were too much for the home-standing Cardinals Sunday with a dominating 69-31 win. The home team traded basket for basket early in the opening period, but soon the visitors began to pull away, leading 15-9 after one period.
Ireton’s second period was a nightmare of missed free throws, lay ups rolling off the rim and by intermission Gonzaga held a 31-9 margin and they would not look back enroute to the win, with 12 different Eagles scoring on the afternoon.
Jamie Pasha led Ireton in scoring with seven points, going 3-for-5 (60%) from the field. Also helping the effort for the Cardinals were Quintin Gilchrest (5 points), Michael Everett (5 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals), Darius Hines (5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal), Nick Schmelzer (4 points, 3 rebounds), Kyle Bethea (2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal) and Jeremiah Brooks (2 points, 5 rebounds). The Cardinals finished the game with 31 rebounds (seven offensive/24 defensive) and four steals.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Jan 21st when they travel to Bishop McNamara for a 7:30pm varsity tipoff. They will return home on Friday when the Knights of O’Connell calls on the redbirds, again a 7:30pm tip for the varsity contest.
