BIH-156315-25743518The holidays met a tourney road trip for Coach Neil Berkman’s Cardinals and they enjoyed winning two of three games while visiting Salisbury, Maryland.

Bishop Ireton opened the Governor’s Cup action with an overtime win against Sussex Tech of New Jersey, 71-69.  It was a high scoring affair and a season-high four Cardinals scored in double figures.  Senior Jeremy Guillaud had a career day, scoring 17 points working in the “paint” for the Alexandrians, Nick Schmelzer also contributed 17 points behind three 3-point goals, sophomore Quintin Gilcrest had 15, and Michael Everett added 11 in the extended contest.

“They were a very good team. I was happy with the effort and energy we played with to get this win.” said Berkman.

Sussex Tech led 18-15 after one quarter, and 37-34 at intermission.  The high scoring affair continued in the third quarter as Ireton shaved a point off the margin, heading to the 4th quarter trailing, 51-49.  Ireton knotted the game at 62 all before outlasting the Sparta, New Jersey crew.

Nick Schmelzer again led Ireton in scoring 12 points in the team’s next game in Salisbury when they fell to Bowie 66-48.  The Bulldogs broke to a 24-11 first quarter lead and, while the chipped away in the second period with 15 points, the Maryland public school led 25-26 at intermission.

In addition to Schmelzer,  the Cardinals got contributions from Quintin Gilchrest (9 points), Michael Everett (8 points, 2 rebounds), Jeremy Guillaud (7 points, 6 rebounds), Kyle Bethea (7 points, 1 steal) and Jamie Pasha (5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal).
The Cardinals finished the game with 18 rebounds (eight offensive/10 defensive) and three steals.

In what is becoming a familiar pattern a month into the season, Nick Schmelzer once again led the Cardinals in scoring, in the final game of the tourney, he scored 19 points to lead the Cardinals to a 46-32 victory over Mervo of Baltimore.

The Cardinals wrapped up the half 22-13 after a 16-5 run.  Schmelzer also contributed two rebounds.  Quintin Gilchrest again hit double digits, scoring 14 points for the Cardinals (6-for-8). Also chipping in for the Cardinals were Darius Hines (6 points, 2 rebounds), Chase Hill (2 points, 1 rebound), Jamie Pasha (2 points, 3 rebounds) and Kyle Bethea (2 points, 1 steal). Jeremy Guillaud was a big defensive contributor as well, racking up eight rebounds and two steals.
The Cardinals finished the game with 21 rebounds (five offensive/16 defensive) and six steals.

Bishop Ireton returns to WCAC play on January 2d when they open 2015 on the road at highly ranked St. Johns.
