Ireton boys’ hoops falls 84-51 in Fairfax

Sophomore Michael Everett (24) has transitioned smoothly from linebacker in the fall to guard in the winter.

Bishop Ireton had a panther by the tail Thursday in Fairfax as the top-ranked Paul VI Panthers (2-0, 2-0) demonstrated their ranking is well deserved with a 84-51 win in their conference home opener.

Paul VI established the tone early, with full court press and an up tempo offensive style to jump out to a 25-7 margin at the end of one period. They kept the pressure on the Cardinals in the second stanza as well, retiring to the locker room with a comfortable 54-16 lead.

Coach Glen Farello substituted liberally throughout the second half, but the Cardinals regrouped after intermission and outscored the home team 21-20 in the third and 14-10 in the final period.

“We lost to a fantastic PVI team tonight.” commented Ireton’s head coach, Neil Berkman following the loss.

For the Cardinals (1-1, 0-1) junior Jeremiah Brooks paced the club with 16 points, sophomore Michael Everett added 11.  Paul VI was paced by Franklin Howard with 22, Ohio transfer VJ King added 16.

The Cards will travel to Episcopal on Saturday for a 3pm tipoff on Quaker Lane, then head to Archbishop Carroll on Tuesday.
