Junior Nick Schmelzer hit his 6th three-pointer of the night with 2.3 seconds remaining to lift Bishop Ireton to a thrilling 71-69 win at Flint Hill in the season opener for the Cardinals. Schmelzer led the visiting Ireton with a game-high 22 points.
Bishop Ireton broke out quickly to an 8-point advantage and nursed the lead throughout the contest. The Huskies chipped away and grabbed the 69-68 lead as the clock raced away from the Cardinals in the final period, setting the stage for the Schmelzer heroics.
In addition to Schmelzer’s 22, junior Jeremiah Brooks had 12, sophomore Quinten Gilcrest 11, and senior Jeremy Guillaud a career high 10 as the Cardinals saw four score in double figures. Michael Everett and Darius Hines each added 5, Kyle Bethea 4, and Jamie Pasha added a deuce. Tyler Femi led the Huskies with 20.
“We played well and we had some luck” said the Cardinals’ Neil Berkman. “14 for 17 from the free throw line was huge.”
