Isabelle Wilcox led the Cardinals over the challengingWoodberry Forest course Friday.

Friday at the Virginia Independent Schools Championship which was held at the Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia.

Woodberry’s course, known for its hilly, rolling course, served as a fitting end for the season as many Ireton harriers ran their best races despite windy conditions.

The boys squad had the benefit of toeing the start line first and it was junior Thomas Ward leading the Cardinals once again through the finish. Thomas finished in a time of 18:32 which was good enough for 36th place. Rounding out the boys top seven were juniors Aaron Ault, David Fernandez, Steve Sisel, freshmen Chris Gaietto, Will Olson, and junior Chris App. The boys team fought hard and placed 15th out of 21 teams.

In the girls race, there was a new face leading the Cardinals through miles two and three as junior Isabelle Wilcox was the first finisher for Ireton across the line. Isabelle finished tenth overall in a time of 20:54 and was followed close behind by junior Maggie Lohrer who finished in 21:09. Lohrer took 15th overall in the girls race.

The rest of the Ireton top seven consisted of freshman Lizzie Lohrer, junior Maggie Mildrew, senior Kaitlin Luzik, sophomores Molly Nealon, and Megan Cunningham. Despite missing one of their top five runners in Natalie Irwin, the ladies still finished a respectable 8th place out of 16 teams.

Some notable honors from this season include the following athletes: Junior Thomas Ward earned first team All State Catholic and first team All City of Alexandria honors. Freshman Lizzie Lohrer earned first team All State Catholic honors. Junior Isabelle Wilcox earned first team All State Catholic, All City of Alexandria, WCAC, and VISAA honors. Junior Maggie Lohrer earned first team All State Catholic, All City of Alexandria, WCAC, and VISAA as well. Maggie Lohrer also won this season’s City of Alexandria Championship race.
