After missing the state playoffs in 2013, the 2014 Cardinals returned to the VISAA volleyball tournament as a number seven seed. The matchup with number two Cape Henry Collegiate was a tall order for the Alexandria school, but Coach Kathy Gutmann was proud of the effort in a 3-0 setback in Virginia Beach. The loss ended Bishop Ireton’s 2014 campaign.
The Cardinals started strong from the opening serve, tied 11-11 in the first set before the favored Dolphins (23-4) put a run together and never looked back in the 25-15 first set victory. They followed with a 25-9 win in set two and continued in the third set to again prevail by a 25-11 count. Cape Henry’s Kristina Smith was dominant at the net, finishing with 20 kills to lead the Dolphins. The hosts advanced to the semifinals against PVI.
Ireton finished the campaign 16-15. Playing without first team all WCAC player, Stephanie Cabrera, the Cardinals missed her important contributions. Sophomore Connor Wood played a strong defensive game for visiting redbirds. “We played to the best of our ability. With over 500 kills for this season sidelined with injuries, we were not at full strength, but there was no quit in our team. Cape Henry is a very, very good team.” said coach Kathy Gutmann.
