Junior Stephen Sisel (above) is a mainstay of the boys' varsity lineup.

The Bishop Ireton boys and girls squads enjoyed a successful trip down to Newport News on Monday, October 21st as they competed with their fellow Catholic schools for the state championship.

The varsity ladies were patient in their approach as they used a fast second loop to make things uncomfortable for the host school, Peninsula Catholic. The boys varsity squad had their best race of the season as they used multiple personal bests to fuel a sixth place finish.

Junior Maggie Lohrer continued her hot streak as she finished runner up to state champion Martine Hunnicut from Peninsula Catholic. Junior Isabelle Wilcox and Freshman Lizzie Lohrer finished seconds apart to finish 7th and 8th overall, respectively. Seniors Natalie Irwin and Kaitlin Luzik ran their best races of the season to round out the Ireton top five.

Sophomore Ann Johnson, freshman Vivian Barker, and freshman Maddy McDade made up the Ireton top three in the girls JV race.

In the boys varsity race, junior Thomas Ward hit a milestone as he dipped below eighteen minutes for the first time in his racing career.  Thomas took the 14th spot overall and was followed closely behind by junior Aaron Ault (27th overall).  Junior Steve Sisel, Chris App, and senior Jimmy Grant rounded out the Ireton top five scorers. Freshmen Will Olson and Chris Gaietto impressed as they proved they could hang with the state’s best varsity runners.
