Bishop Ireton's Emily Owens got a win at number 3 doubles for the Cardinals varsity squad.

Coach Katie Sloper-Johnson’s tennis team bounced back from a setback at National Catherdral School last week to upend the Academy of the Holy Cross, 9-0 at the Wakefield Park tennis courts Tuesday.

For the Cardinals, it was a time to bid farewell to six seniors playing their final home match of the regular season.

Number one singles, senior Kirsten Parker battled the Tartans’ Dori Mesmer 8-4, while number two, Stephanie Lin defeated Hania Linderking, 8-1.

Senior Haley McKeen stopped Megan Rumphrey, 8-0, and Casey Jackson dispatched Emmie Strataleis, 8-1, at the number four singles.  Laney Delaney and Elizabeth Todd, at five and six singles respectively, won their matches with Ayaki Nakahaski and Mary Rowedder by identical 8-1 counts.

The Cardinals got an immediate win when their number one doubles team of Parker/Lin won as Mesmer, the introduced half of the Holy Cross doubles pair was forced to retire after her singles match because of a shoulder issue. McKeen and Jackson scored a 8-1 win at number two doubles as did Emily Owens and Delaney, who completed the sweep with a victory at number three doubles.

The Cardinals will make up a rained out meeting with Good Counsel this week on Wednesday and ready themselves for another visit to Olney when they challenge for the upcoming 2014 WCAC tennis championships.
