Rebecca Mueller in action against Archbishop Spalding

Bishop Ireton’s soccer girls took another try at an MIAA soccer heavyweight, hosting Archbishop Spalding of Severn, Maryland. a week after they entertained highly ranked McDonogh School of Owings Mills.  This battle was a closely contested affair, but once again, the visitors had just a bit more than the Cardinals in a thrilling 3-2 contest on Witter Drive Fields.

It was a hard fought, evenly matched game, the Cardinals scored first, then rebounded to take a 2-1 lead before the Cavaliers forged into the lead, one the home team challenged and had some opportunities to change, but couldn’t find the equalizer.

Grace Hersey and Laura Mueller tallied for the Cardinals, freshman Grace Sklopan and junior Lilly Weber recorded assists for the home team.

“We had them on their heels early, that first 10 minutes we could have put them in quite a hole.” lamented head coach, Gino Leon.  “But, I guess, after a long ride on the bus, they found their legs and got the goals they needed. I liked the way we controlled the ball, but we couldn’t find the back of the net often enough today.”

When the Cardinals took a long bus ride themselves, a 55-mile journey to Leonardtown, Maryland, they found some improved luck as they returned to WCAC action at St. Mary’s Ryken.

Weber and Frances Hamilton were the beneficiaries of a pair of Grace Hersey assists and the visiting redbirds cruised to a 2-0 win. The prettiest goal of the game, according to Leon, didn’t even count.  Grace Sklopan’s shot from 25 yards away found the back of the net, but was disallowed by the center official .

Ireton’s defense played one of its best games of the season said the head coach against a much improved and dangerous Knights squad.  The win improved the Alexandrians’ WCAC mark to 2-0 with Holy Cross visiting on Friday before rival Bishop O’Connell calls on the Cardinals the following Tuesday.
