Cardinals earn win, tie in tough WCAC match ups

Goalkeeper Matt Poling has been a steady performer for the Cardinals in their 8-3-1 start to the 2014 campaign.

The last day of September saw the Knight’s of St. Mary’s Ryken come to Northern Virginia for a WCAC tilt at Witter Field.

Ryken had taken the past few matches in this series and Ryken started off with the mindset of nothing less than a victory.  After some initial possession by Ryken, Ireton began pinging the ball around, but found the finishing touch to be missing. They would solve that problem soon however, in the Cardianls’ 3-0 win at Witter Drive Fields.

After several attacking chances, Garrison Norem played a ball from the back, in more of an effort to clear the ball out of pressure.  His timely ball played into the Ryken defensive third ended up being right on pace with Nick Ducceschi, as he collected the ball and calmly finished past the Ryken goalkeeper to take a one to nothing lead.

With a one goal lead in the second half, Ireton used the coaching points during the halftime talk from Coach Norem and continued with pressure that created copious amounts of shots on goal and attacking soccer.

Henson Webre then received a ball crossed into the box and finished for the 2-nil lead.  Nick Ducceschi would put the final touch on scoring for Ireton, after being played in to the Ryken box, Ducceschi went one on one with the Ryken keeper, neatly chipping the keeper to secure a three nil clean sheet and a big WCAC win!

A rare Thursday WCAC match would take place on the campus of Trinity University between the Cardinals of Bishop Ireton and the Eagles of Gonzaga.  The past two meetings failed to produce a victor, with last year’s regular season match ending in a tie and the WCAC quarterfinal ending a 0-0 tie that Gonzaga eventually survived in penalty kicks. The Thursday visit would prove equally tight, the squads battling to a 1-1 draw.

With both teams wanting to produce a winner, the match started off sharp and stayed that way with both squads.  Gonzaga began to take a little more possession and ultimately cleaned up a ball in the box to take a one goal lead.  This lead looked like it would hold until halftime, but a clever piece of one beat, one skill by Sampiao saw him take his defender on the right flank, cut into the Gonzaga box and play a ball across the goal to Joey Faddoul.  Faddoul took one touch and placed his shot in the side netting to level the score at 1-1 going into halftime.

Both teams traded chances with Ireton getting a direct free kick just outside of the 18 yard box.  A well rehearsed free kick saw Gonzaga defenders back out of the wall opening more than enough for Joey Faddoul to rip a shot past the purple clad netminder.  However the man in the center circle called the goal back and had the free kick taken again because he had not blown his whistle.  The second attempt was stopped and Ireton would see their final quality chance moments before the final whistle with Faddoul sending a shot over the frame, leaving another Ireton-Gonzaga match tied in regulation for the third straight meeting.

The Cardinals (8-3-1) travel to Bishop O’Connell Tuesday to challenge the Knights, who tied DeMatha in their last contest.  Varsity squares off at 4pm, junior varsity match will follow.
