Number 1 singles, senior Kirsten Parker, won her singles and doubles matches against PVI, but the Cardinals were edged 5-4.
The Cardinals, battling the ISL Stone Ridge Gators, rival Paul VI, and some illness to players, couldn’t over come the combination in back-to-back one game setbacks in girls’ tennis action.
The Alexandrians got off to a fast start with number 1 singles, Kirsten Parker, number 2, junior Stephanie Lin, and number 3 Haley McKeen posting wins. Parker triumphed 9-7, Lin winning 8-6 as did McKeen. The Gators rallied to win in the number 4 singles match and swept the doubles to escape with the 4-3 win in the four singles, 3 doubles format.
Bishop Ireton headed to Fairfax High School on Sept 11th to battle Paul VI’s Panthers, back in the WCAC with the 6 singles, 3 doubles format. The Cardinals got wins from Lin and McKeen at number 3 singles, both by 8-6 counts.
The doubles teams of Parker/ Lin at number 1 doubles got an 8-6 victory and the number 3 doubles team of Laney Delaney/Emily Owens squeaked by in a tiebreaker 9-7 (7-1).
“We played very well this week, all the matches were close.” said coach Katie Johnson-Sloper. “We are making improvements every time out, the girls’ are headed in the right direction with their tennis.”
Cardinals travel to McLean to challenge another ISL tennis heavyweight, The Potomac School. Singles play begins at 4:15pm on the campus of the School. Ireton returns to conference play when Elizabeth Seton visits Wakefield Park courts for a WCAC matchup on Thursday at 4pm.
