Cardinals battle Knights in field hockey action.

The Cardinals improved to 2-0, 1-0 in WCAC play with its second shutout, this time a 5-0 drubbing of rival Bishop O’Connell on Fannon Field Monday.

“I felt the girls played extremely well, they showed good off the ball movement as well as a strong midfield presence.” said head coach, Erin Simons, in her fourth season at helm of the young program.  “It was a great first WCAC conference game win and we look forward to refining our skills in practice, taking a deeper look at our technical pieces and putting it all together in the next few games.”

Bishop Ireton dominated play, the final statistics showing the Cardinals recorded 15 shots on goal to 4 for the visitors. The margin was substantial in penalty corners as well, with the redbirds holding a 14-2 advantage in that key category as well.

Grace Fletcher opened the barrage for the home team, scoring with 22:14 remaining in the opening half.  Christine Macey made it 2-0 shortly afterwards, the first of two goals she would score in the game, tallying at 16:36 remaining.  The Knights would steady the ship at that point, and the teams went to intermission separated by a pair of goals and the Cardinals holding a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.  The second half, however, would unfold much differently.

Macey and Kelly Mathews doubled the Bishop Ireton advantage in the first 15 minutes of the second half and the Cardinals began to pepper the Knights with shots and pressure that led to 11 second half corners.  Callan McCormick scored the Cards 5th and final goal with 8:18 remaining, though the Alexandria school continued to press their diocesan rivals to the game’s conclusion.

Ireton’s JV likewise pounded O’Connell, 7-0 with Mary Cate Gordon scoring three times for the young redbirds.

Next up for Bishop Ireton is Osbourne Senior High School on Saturday. JV tilt opens at 9am with varsity slated for 10:30.
