Girls Soccer splits a pair in McDonogh Invitational

Goalkeeper Amy Krotine had a strong tournament in goal for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals girls’ soccer team joined other elite high school programs from throughout the midAtlantic region over the weekend for a pair of games at the McDonogh School of Owings Mills, Maryland.

On Friday night, Ireton had a rematch of last year’s opener with Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.  In 2013, the redbirds edged B-CC 2-1, this year, however, the Maryland public school exacted some measure of revenge with a 4-1 triumph over Bishop Ireton.

The Cardinals, under Coach Gino Leon, continue to search for the right combination in their lineup and Friday’s contest gave the Ireton mentor more ideas.  “We have played three very, very good soccer teams.  Doing that is extremely valuable in discovering what works and what needs some fine tuning.  You can’t hide weaknesses playing at this level.” said Leon of the season to date. “I think we did some really good things so far, we have improved each time out.  We will work on some things, keep getting better. ”

Leon suggested the team looked good in the Friday contest, but some defensive miscues by the Cardinals put them in a hole.   Things were better on Saturday.

Saturday morning, the team rebounded from the setback on Friday night and dominated Liberty High School for a 4-2 win.

Lilly Weber tallied three times for Bishop Ireton, Grace Hersey scored a goal as well.  Coach Leon credited Francesca Leoncio and Rebecca Mueller with assists in the game, but had special praise for the improved play of his back line.

“Amy Krotine played a great game for us” said Leon, “and senior Shaefer Cabaniss worked tirelessly on defense.  We needed that. Obviously, Lilly had another strong game and the improved play on defense was important.”

Bishop Ireton (1-2) has another tiger by the tail on Tuesday as powerhouse, Sidwell Friends hosts the Cardinals at 4:15 in Washington.
