This season’s tryouts for the Cardinals tennis yielded its biggest turnout in the Coach Sloper-Johnson era, one spanning eight seasons.
After graduating 5 seniors last year, 36 ladies tried out for the JV/Varsity squads. Bishop Ireton has the team’s most valuable player, junior Stephanie Lin returning along with varsity letterwinners Kiersten Parker, Haley McKeen and Molly Jeffers.
These newcomers have been working hard these past couple of weeks to secure the final two varsity singles spots as well as possible berths on the three varsity doubles assignments. Finding those new players will be key to securing a strong lineup top to bottom for Bishop Ireton in the always tough Washington Catholic Athletic Conference’s fall season.
Coach Katie Sloper-Johnson’s charges open the tennis campaign on Thursday, September 4th when they host the Saints of St Stephens/St Agnes School at Wakefield Park at 4pm. The junior varsity squad will drop in on the Saints on St Stephens Road where Coach Tom Noone’s team opens their 2014 season visiting the scarlet and green. That match will also begin at 4pm.
