Girls Lacrosse Advances to State Semifinals, 19-6

First team, all WCAC goalie senior Olivia Cole in action against Norfolk Academy. Future U of Florida player had 4 saves in semifinal win Tuesday.

The Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team (18-4) came away with a decisive 19-6 VISAA state playoff victory over the Norfolk Academy Bulldogs yesterday at Fannon Field. The Cardinals came out strong and led early 6-1. It was 11-2 at halftime. Keys to the complete victory were draw control domination, a wide-ranging scoring attack, and a solid defensive effort.

Nine different BI players scored goals and five different players notched assists. Kelly Larkin had three goals and five assists; Kendall Cunningham had four goals; Charlotte Sofield got three goals-two assists; Kelly Mathews scored three goals; Caton Brisbin scored two goals; Natalie Irwin got one goal-one assist; Kayla Duperrouzel, Grace Fletcher, and Kayla Marshall each scored one goal; and Kaitlin Luzik notched one assist.

 

The goalie sisters once again anchored the tough Bishop Ireton defense. Senior Olivia Cole had four saves and two assists; and freshman Amelia Cole had three saves.

 

NEWS AND NOTES:

 

Future Florida Gator Olivia Cole now has 560 career saves spanning three seasons at Ireton (2012, 2013, and 2014) and her 2011 freshman campaign at T.C. Williams.

 

Kelly Mathews leads the team in goals scored with 76; Kendall Cunningham has 55; and Charlotte Sofield has 47. Sofield leads the team in assists with 60; Larkin has 36; and Mathews has 26. Sofield leads the team in points with 107; Mathews has 102; and Larkin has 78. During the 2014 season, Olivia Cole has 120 saves and Amelia Cole has 18.

 

Bishop Ireton goes to Richmond to play the winner of the Bishop O’Connell/Collegiate quarterfinal, rained out on Tuesday, in a semifinal game on Friday, May 16, 11:00 a.m. The VISAA Division I championship game is Saturday, May 17, 11:00 a.m., at Collegiate School in Richmond. Admission to all state semifinal and championship games is $10.
