Ireton’s senior softball players shined on senior night as the Cardinals came from behind to upset Good Counsel 7-6 on Monday. The win completes the regular season with the team posting an 8-14 record.

After an enthusiastic and emotional senior recognition ceremony, Ireton spotted the Falcons two first inning runs. Good Counsel’s bats lit up again in the third inning, adding four more runs and pushing the score to 6-0.

Ireton’s comeback started in the bottom half of the third when Clara Boggs hustled to first base on a dropped third strike. Senior Heather Pearson then tripled, driving in the Cardinals’ first run of the night. It was the 26th RBI of the season for the Susquehanna university softball recruit.

The comeback continued in the 6th inning as Ireton exploded for 5 runs. Maggie Coyle singled and with two outs Clara Bogg’s hard ground ball forced an error extending the inning. With two runners on, Good Counsel elected to intentionally walk Heather Pearson, bring up senior Megan Sullivan. The Ole Miss-bound senior made the Falcons pay by lining a single to center field, driving in the second run of the night. Freshman Emma Klein then tripled plating two more runs and evening the score at 6 runs apiece.

In the sixth, Ireton’s Molly Jeffers singled and reached second on a Good Counsel error. Heather Pearson then drove in the go ahead run, making the score 7-6 and completing the comeback.

Good Counsel was not finished and attacked hard in the seventh inning. With runners on second and third, the game was sealed when Angela Click caught a long fly ball to right field.

“Am so thrilled for our seniors. In the last home game of their high school careers they led their team back from a 6 run deficit to upset a conference opponent,” remarked proud head coach Terri Pearson. “It has been such a privilege to work with these girls over the past 4 years and see them become the great young adults they are.

On Saturday, the Knights of St Mary’s Ryken sidelined the Cardinals in the WCAC quarterfinals, the girls’ now face Paul VI in the quarterfinals of the VISAA state tournament on Tuesday.
