Redbirds drop of pair of softball contests in weather-plagued week of action

Posted On: Tuesday, April 08, 2014

Weather has played havoc with schedules, but Cardinals are playing a game a day pace.

Bishop Ireton’s softball team dropped a pair of games this week, losing a close game to Elizabeth Seton on Wednesday before being overmatched by St. Mary’s Ryken on Friday afternoon. The pair of losses give the Cardinals a 3-4 record overall.

It was a see saw battle at Seton as the two teams traded leads. Ireton jumped out early 1-0 and held on until Seton came back with a pair in the fourth. Ireton regained the lead in the fifth when Molly Jeffers hit a triple and was driven in on a Heather Pearson RBI single to make the score 3-2. Seton came back to tie it in their half of the inning. With the game knotted at 3 going into the final frame, Seton led off with a triple and two batters later a walk off single brought her in to win the game. Molly Jeffers went 2 for 4 with a triple while Susie Rhodes gave up 8 hits and struck out 2 over 6 1/3 innings.

On Friday, Ireton was outplayed by a strong St. Mary’s Ryken team, losing 7-1. After a scoreless first, Ryken was able to get a single run across in the second. The game remained close until the 3rd when Ireton’s defense broke down, allowing 3 runs on a walk, 2 hits and 2 errors making the score 4-0. Ryken then added additional runs in the 5th and 6th innings. Ireton’s lone run came on a Clara Boggs RBI single plating Megan Sullivan who had doubled earlier. Ireton could not do much against strong Ryken pitching, ending the day with only 4 hits and 11 strikeouts.

“It was a tough couple of games,” remarked coach Terri Pearson, “am convinced we could have beaten Seton, but we were simply overmatched against Ryken on Friday.”

It will be a busy week for Ireton this week, after traveling to O’Connell on Monday, the Cardinals host St. Johns on Tuesday, PVI on Wednesday and Holy Cross on Friday. Home games are played on Luckett field, first pitch at 4PM.
