The Cardinals girls’ lacrosse team won a tough game Saturday afternoon 14-9 in a continuously hard, cold rain in Severn, MD, against IAAM opponent Archbishop Spalding. Ireton came out firing early and led 7-1 in the first half before a highly skilled Spalding squad rallied to make the score 7-5 at the half.
Draw control and smart passing were keys to the eventual victory in the second half. Bishop Ireton’s patient offense chewed up the clock and looked for opportunities to strike. Spalding held steady for most of the second half but the Cavaliers were not able to narrow the Cardinals’ lead to any closer than a two-goal margin. Turnovers late in the game allowed BI to strike quickly and expand their lead to five goals.
Junior Charlotte Sofield had one goal and five key assists; freshman Kate Carney notched four goals and one assist; and junior Kelly Mathews had three goals and two assists. Also finding the back of the net, senior Kendall Cunningham and junior Kaitlin Luzik each had two goals and one assist; and sophomore Kelly Larkin scored two goals. Junior Christine Macey added an assist just when it was needed most. Senior goalie Olivia Cole came up big when it counted with eight saves.
In total during the three-game season so far, the balanced Bishop Ireton scoring attack has seen 17 different players score goals and 12 different Cardinals have notched assists. Defensively senior goalie Cole has 19 saves and the team has an overall 5.33 goals against average.
The Nike/US Lacrosse poll currently ranks the Cardinals at #19 in the country while the StudentSports.com FAB 50 national poll has Ireton holding steady at #13 in its latest edition. The team is scheduled to travel to Holy Cross for a key WCAC game Tuesday at 4pm while conference foe Bishop McNamara comes to Fannon Field on Wednesday. A visit by Flint Hill’s Huskies to Fannon this coming Saturday afternoon caps off the Cardinals 10th Annual Lacrosse Day festivities.
