Bishop Ireton lost despite Kyle Guzik‘s spectacular day from both the mound and the plate.   Guzik racked up two RBIs on one hit for the Cardinals on a seventh inning double.

Gonzaga’s lineup had no answer for  Guzik.   He held Gonzaga hitless over one inning, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out one.

The Eagles’ Jackson Freeman got it done on the mound on the way to a win.  He tossed four innings of shutout ball. Jackson struck out four, walked four and gave up three hits.

Kyle Delaney was the game’s losing pitcher. He pitched three innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed five runs, though most unearned due to some untimely mistakes.

Gonzaga took the lead in the first, scoring two runs on an RBI single by Connor Van Hoose.

Gonzaga got three-run rallies in the third inning and the fourth. In the third, Gonzaga scored on a groundout by Billy Begala, plating Ryan Leonard.

Gonzaga tacked on another three runs in the fourth.

A four-run seventh inning helped bring Alexandria visitors within four.   A two-run double by Kyle Guzik, an RBI single by Ryan Scott, and a sacrifice fly by Chandler Wilder fueled the comeback. Finally, Joe Dahut got Sam Ratner to fly out to end the game.

Bishop Ireton falls to 1-1 in WCAC play, 2-2 overall.  Bishop McNamara visits the Cardinals Saturday for a 5:30pm start. It’s “Honor the Troops” night for the ball club, veterans and military invited to attend the game, including a pregame festivities at 5pm.  DC Washington, a local legendary sports voice from the Nationals, Capitals, and Redskins is scheduled to be on hand to sing the national anthem.
