Robinson edges Bishop Ireton 5-4 on senior night

Senior Stephen Gerke skates into the offensive zone in recent action. Gerke scored the first Cardinal goal of the game Friday in a 5-4 loss to Robinson.

It may have been the fact it was senior night for the ice hockey team, or maybe it was the packed house at Mt Vernon Rec center, or a combination of the two, but the Cardinals took to the ice with a little something extra against the Robinson Rams and it showed in a hard fought 5-4 setback for Bishop Ireton.

As usual the offense was firing on all cylinders taking the game to a 3-3 tie at the first intermission. First period goals were scored by Seniors Stephen Gerke (1) and Phillip Thomas (2). But it was the solid play of the defense that kept the Cards in the game Friday night, with a great showing from second year goal tender Ryan Lucas who garnered double digits saves.

The game was close throughout and both teams were evenly matched. Going into the second intermission things remained knotted up with a score of 4 to 4, Dylan Roach being the next senior to add to the goal scoring list.

But the Rams seemed to have a counter punch for everything Ireton threw at them and when Robinson took the lead halfway through the 3rd period their strong defense and exceptional goal tending (38 saves) allowed them to hang on to a 5-4 win.

That’s nothing to take away from the Cardinals who played some of their best hockey on home ice all year. It was a great all around senior night beginning with the opening ceremony to honor them along with their parents, and ending with the seniors tallying all of the goals scored and the underclassman playing their hearts out for the veterans on the team. A win would have been icing on the cake.

The Cardinals look to get that win this Friday the 14th, when they head back to Mt. Vernon to take on the cross town rival Saints of St. Stephens St Agnes, puck drops at 7pm.
