Bishop Ireton landed 6 players on the VISAA Division I all state teams and had a father-daughter coup of sorts when Coach Rick Sofield was selected as the coach of the year for the second consecutive year and UNC-bound daughter, Charlotte, earned player of the year honors.
Joining Sofield on the first team was senior Kaitlin Luzik, junior Kelly Larkin, and sophomore Kayla Duperrouzel. Boston University’s Kelly Mathews was selected for second team honors as was junior defenseman Maggie Lohrer.
The two finalists dominated the all state selections, St Stephens & St Agnes garnering 4 first team, 1 second team selectees, while the Cardinals placed four on the first squad and two on the second. Twelve schools in all placed one or more players on the elite lists.
For Coach Sofield, it was his second consecutive selection for the distinguished recognition. His 2014 team won both the WCAC and VISAA titles. His 2015 squad was upset in the WCAC semifinals but upended the Saints for the second year in a row, spoiling a perfect season to end 28-1. The Cardinals ended their campaign at 20-3.
