In a pool of 29 teams, the Bishop Ireton Men’s and Women’s squads each took 9th place at the Washington Metropolitan Preparatory School Swim and Dive League Championship held at Fairland Aquatic Center in Laurel, Maryland on January 31.
New Cardinal team records were set by:
- Anna Shumate in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with 1:05.10, taking first place in her third showdown with O’Connell’s Sarah Cahill, making this series 3-0.
- Ben Gorski in the 100 Free with 46.34, taking fourth place overall.
Six of the Cardinal relay teams went on to place in the finals.

Facing tough competition at this meet, the BI Women’s squad finished with 115 points compared to meet winners The Holton-Arms School taking 290 points. Olympian Katie Ledecky, who swims on the Stone Ridge team, was among the competition making waves at this meet. Bishop O’Connell narrowly edged out the Lady Cardinals with 122 points, setting the stage for the Saints vs. Cardinals meet this week. The top men’s school, Gonzaga, scored 478 points against the BI Men’s squad total of 111.
Next up: Bishop Denis J. O’Connell at Marymount University on Thursday, February 5. This will be the Cardinal’s season finale for dual meets and Senior Night with brother coaches John Gullickson and Evan Stiles facing off.
