Junior Shannon Corridon (10) started her first game of the season and responded with 11 points against O’Connell.

Bishop Ireton(12-10, 3-9) grabbed a 14-11 early lead but couldn’t hold it enroute to a 64-52 setback to Bishop O’Connell Friday in Arlington.

The Cardinals broke out of a 9-9 tie to lead 14-11 after a period of play. The Knights countered in the second period with a 19-11 rally to take a 30-25 advantage at halftime.

The third period was a back-and-forth affair, Ireton closed to within a point, but h the home team finished the period by adding a point to their 5-point cushion as the game moved to the final chapter.

The ball wouldn’t fall for the visitors in the last act and the Knights raced away to the 11-point margin of victory.  8 Cardinals got in the score book, three in double figures. CeCe Leone and Alex Stipano each chipped in 14, junior Shannon Corridon, started her first game and responded with 11.  Aiden Phillips had 6 for the Cardinals, Michelle Montgomery 3, Danielle Hatchett 2.  Four Knights were in double figures, led by Maddie Cherry’s 20, Jasmine Taylor 15, Janiya Clemmons 12, and Coral Gillette with 10.

Cardinals fall to O’Connell at home

Sophomore Michael Everett led the Cardinals in scoring with 8 points.

Sophomore Michael Everett led the Cardinals in scoring with 8 points.

Bishop Ireton battled the favored Bishop O’Connell Knights early but couldn’t stay with the visitors in a 62-33 setback on Friday in Alexandria.

The Knights jumped to 7-0 lead only to see Ireton rally to tie the game at 7-7. It looked like football scoring at that point with O’Connell then rattling off another 7 consecutive points to take a 14-7 lead to end  the first period.

Second quarters have been an Achilles heel for the Cardinals and the Knights exploited the young squad with an  18-5 period to put the Arlington school firmly in control at halftime by a 32-12 margin.

O’Connell added five more points to the lead in the third and the final period was a high scoring affair, with the Knights extending the final margin with a 16-12 fourth period.

Sophomore Michael Everett led the Cardinal scoring with 8 points, Nick Schmelzer added 7, Darius Hines had 6.  Dominic Fragala and Randall Gaskins each had 13 for O’Connell, among the nine Knights would scored on the evening.

Junior Trey Lovisone, top, pinned all three opponents enroute a championship at 195 and Outstanding Wrestler of the Commonwealth Catholic Championships in Richmond Saturday.

Led by a championship at 195, Bishop Ireton placed fourth in the 8-team event, drawing Catholic schools from across Virginia.  Host Benedictine won the event with Paul VI second, Peninsula Catholic third.

Coach Kwinten Brown was happy with the Cardinals performance in the meet, many of his young grapplers showing their progress on the mat. Three other Cardinals joined Lovisone in the title matches, with Joey Siedlarz, Max Russell, and Gavin Webster earning second place team points for the Alexandria school. Sophomore Declan Sofield wrestled back for a 4th place finish and a number of Cardinals ended the day in 5th place.

Lovisone, a junior, pinned Bishop Sullivan’s Ben Murphy at 1:27 of their match, and the burly Cardinal dispatched Cory Snyder of PVI in 1:10 of their bout. The tourney’s outstanding wrestler capped the day with another fall, this one at 3:56 of the championship over Benedictine’s Chris McGee.

Max Russell, at 120, pinned O’Connell’s John Edmond at 4:23 in the opening match, then decked PVI’s Conlin Frank in 3:25, who had defeated him earlier in dual competition, before falling to the Cadets’ Brady Biller 7-2 in the championship.

Joey Siedlarz, at 182, earned a top seed and a bye in the opening round. He needed only 105 seconds to pin John Simms of St John Paul the Great before losing a 6-3 decision to Harry Young of Benedictine.

Second-seeded Gavin Webster wrestled at 285. The Ireton heavyweight decked Benedictine’s Bert Hinton at 3:46 of their match, then outpointed JPG’s Matthew Keller, 7-1 before Benedictine’s top-seeded Ian Williams won by a fall in the title match.

Declan Sofield opened his day in Richmond with a 7-1 decision over PVI’s Chase Huston before being pinned by Peninsula Catholic’s Sean Kiddy. Matt Kuehler of Roanoke Catholic ended Sofield’s day with a 10-4 win, placing Sofield in the fourth spot at 145.

Cardinals topped in Sunday basketball matinee

Ireton's Jamie Pasha led the Cardinal scoring against Gonzaga Sunday.

Ireton’s Jamie Pasha led the Cardinal scoring against Gonzaga Sunday.

The Gonzaga Eagles were too much for the home-standing Cardinals Sunday with a dominating 69-31 win. The home team traded basket for basket early in the opening period, but soon the  visitors began to pull away, leading 15-9 after one period.

Ireton’s second period was a nightmare of missed free throws, lay ups rolling off the rim and by intermission Gonzaga held a 31-9 margin and they would not look back enroute to the win, with 12 different Eagles scoring on the afternoon.

Jamie Pasha led Ireton in scoring with seven points, going 3-for-5 (60%) from the field.  Also helping the effort for the Cardinals were Quintin Gilchrest (5 points), Michael Everett (5 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals), Darius Hines (5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal), Nick Schmelzer (4 points, 3 rebounds), Kyle Bethea (2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal) and Jeremiah Brooks (2 points, 5 rebounds).  The Cardinals finished the game with 31 rebounds (seven offensive/24 defensive) and four steals.

The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Jan 21st when they travel to Bishop McNamara for a 7:30pm varsity tipoff.  They will return home on Friday when the Knights of O’Connell calls on the redbirds, again a 7:30pm tip for the varsity contest.

On December 11, 2014, the BI Cardinals flew past the Paul VI Panthers in dual meet action at Marymount University. The Cardinals’ women garnered 94.5 points to the  Panther’s 75.5, while the men’s squad dominated 101-69. The combined team score was Cardinals 195.5 and Panthers 155.5

Showing their team spirit to help others, the BI Water Cardinals dug deep and helped to deliver Christmas to ten Bucknell Elementary School families for their Holiday Service Project. School representative Mrs. St. John-Cunning was very appreciative of all of the donated gifts as well as the generous time donation to gather, assemble, and wrap everything. Gift wrappers included Clara Boggs, Jimmy Grant, Hayden Britt, Rose Meyers, and Annie Sullivan. A special thanks goes out to Carla Pena’s mom, Vanessa, who with the help of her son, came and wrapped presents for three families. And Carla isn’t even swimming this year! The gifts were delivered on December 18, 2014 by team moms Phyllis Boggs and Joy Kelly.   As observed by team dad Rob McGuckin, “I am sure I speak for everyone when I say “great job” with this initiative. What you all have done here is a true game-changer for these families. I was moved when I read the initial email, and continued to be through viewing the picture below. Thank you for representing the school and your families with this selfless act.”

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals kicked off 2015 with decisive defense of their champion title at the Northern Virginia Catholic High School Invitational on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Freedom Fitness and Aquatic Center of the George Mason University Manassas campus. Competing against Bishop Denis J. O’Connell , Paul VI, Saint John Paul the Great, Seton School, Saint Michael the Archangel, Oakcrest and Saint Gertrude, the BI swimmers splashed their way to a first place for the second year running for the men and the third year for the women.

The BI women divers Kate Wimbush and Kate Murray (both freshmen), kicked off the meet with 4th and 5th places in the one-meter event against three seniors from O’Connell, putting the first points on the scoreboard for Ireton.

Sophomore Anna Shumate broke two meet records with incredible swims in the 50 Free and the 100 ******. The women’s 200 Medley relay team of sophomores Emma Klein and Anna Shumate, junior Anna Fracasso and senior Hayley Snell snagged first place in a breathtaking finish that was a National Catholic qualifying time.  Emma Klein also grabbed first place in the 100 butterfly with a powerful finish that was a VISAA-qualifying time.

The men’s Most Valuable Swimmer, as voted by all the coaches at the meet, was senior Ben Gorski, with first place swims in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke as well as his role in the 200 Medley relay’s team first place result (with senior A.J. Salvatori, junior Michael Morrison and senior Ryan Scott, also a National Catholic qualifying time) and the 200 Free relay team’s second place finish (with sophomore Jermaine Thompson, senior Ryan Scott and senior Jimmy Grant, another National Catholic qualifying time). Michael Morrison took a commanding first place in the 200 IM (and a National Catholic qualifier) and A.J. Salvatori landed a stunning first place in the 100 backstroke (another National Catholic qualifier).  Along with all these impressive swims was a supporting team of second through fourth team swimmers, all of whom contributed to the winning totals and team spirit at the invitational meet.

Keeping the championship pace up, the BI Swim & Dive team brought home a first place trophy for both the men’s and women’s squads as the perennial favorite at the  Alexandria City Championship meet, soaring past the T.C. Williams Titans and the Saint Stephens / Saint Agnes Saints at Chinquapin Recreation Center on January 13, 2015. This year’s meet included a very competitive Saint Stephens / Saint Agnes swim and dive team, but the Cardinals out-swam the Saints by a combined 35-point margin of 189 – 154. The combined point spread between the Cardinals and the Titans was 79 with final score of 214 – 135. Unofficially, this is the 13th year running that BI has defended the Tri-City Championship.
First place winners included:
Women’s 200 Medley Relay – Hayley Snell, Anna Shumate, Anna Fracasso and Abigail Grillo
Men’s 200 Freestyle – Michael Morrison
Women’s 200 Freestyle – Emma Klein
Men’s 200 Individual Medley – Ben Gorski
Women’s 50 Freestyle – Hayley Snell
Women’s 100 butterfly – Emma Klein
Men’s 100 Freestyle – A.J. Salvatori
Women’s 100 Freestyle – Anna Shumate
Men’s 400 Freestyle – Michael Morrison
Women’s 200 Free Relay – Emma Klein, Lori Abbed, Anney Matlock and Clara Boggs
Men’s 100 Breaststroke – Ben Gorski
Women’s 100 Breaststroke – Anna Shumate
Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay – Michael Morrison, Jimmy Grant, A.J. Salvatori and Ben Gorski
Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay – Emma Klein, Abigail, Hayley Snell and Anna Shumate

The freshman women divers Kate Wimbush and Kate Murray also placed 4th and 5th in the one meter dive event, respectively.

In this meet, only the top six places in each event count toward the final team scores. Worthy of note are all the individuals and relay teams, in addition to those listed above, who contributed to the total points scored to push the Water Cardinals to the wall to win the meet. The depth of the BI bench was in play with 3rd and 4th teams kicking to finishes that were competitive with, and, in some cases, exceeded the 1st and 2nd team results. Incredible team spirit was evident as the Cardinals cheered teammates to photo finishes. Also evident was the Cardinal sportsmanship of supporting friends on competing teams in their efforts in the pool.

The regular season swimming will conclude with meets against Our Lady of Good Counsel on January 19 and Bishop Denis J. O’Connell on February 5. The Cardinals will be competing at the National Catholic Swimming and Diving Championship at the Mangione Aquatic Center in Baltimore on January 24-25, the WMPSSDL Championship at the Fairland Aquatic Center on January 31 and the Metros in Germantown on February 6-7. The season concludes with the VISAA State Tournament on February 13-14.

Basketball upended at St John Paul the Great, 55-48

Junior Nick Schmelzer (33) had a game-high 20 but the Cardinals were edged in Dumfries Saturday afternoon by the Wolves.

The home team took a 7-point lead after one quarter of play, and when it was all over, that was the final margin of victory for St John Paul the Great in Dumfries, 55-48 Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves staked themselves to a 16-9 first period advantage and though the Cardinals cut into the margin, trailing 24-21 at intermission, Bishop Ireton could not maintain that momentum in the second half.  With JPG leading 40-36 going into the final period the teams traded hoops and the home team took advantage of a 25 to 8 margin in opportunities from the free throw line.   The visiting Cardinals collected only five points from the charity stripe while the home team made 15 of their 25 chances.

Nick Schmelzer again led Bishop Ireton in scoring, putting 20 points on the board, junior Jeremiah Brooks added 9 and Quintin Gilcrest had 6. John Paul The Great clinched their lead in the third quarter on a three-pointer from Daud Avazova, who led the Wolves with 19 points.  Brandon Edmond had 15, Xayvin Johnson chipped in 10 for the winners.

The Cardinals finished the game with 22 rebounds (11 offensive/11 defensive) and five steals.

The Cardinals return home to host Gonzaga on Sunday at 3pm in a varsity only affair. The rescheduled date sees the frosh and JV contests set for Saturday, Feb 14th at 11am and 12:30pm respectively in Alexandria.

Bishop Ireton rallies at Carroll, 65-59

CeCe Leone had a season high 31 points in Cardinals win at Archbishop Carroll on Friday.

CeCe Leone had 31 points in Cardinals win at Archbishop Carroll on Friday.

Senior CeCe Leone had a career-high 31 points as Bishop Ireton (12-8, 3-6) staged a second half rally in Washington Friday night to sweep the regular season series with the Lions, 65-59.

The Cardinals had an inauspicious beginning to the evening, falling behind 12-4 before Coach Jason Harris got a time out and steadied the ship. Ireton responded and closed the quarter on an 11-4 run to trail 16-15.

Archbishop Carroll jumped on the visitors early in the second stanza and raced back out to a 31-22 margin, only to again see the visitors rally to trail by only 37-32 at intermission.

Ireton grabbed its first lead at 38-37 and the traded baskets with the white-jerseyed Lions on top 45-43 as the teams headed into the 4th period.  And, that was “show time” for Leone.

Bailey White, with 26 points of her own on the night for Carroll, had kept the Lions in control of the contest, but the final period belonged to the ponytailed Ireton senior.  With the visitors trailing 47-43, the senior forward scored the game’s next 6 points and the Cardinals surged to a 49-47 lead.

The teams traded baskets, Carroll edging ahead, 53-50, but junior Paige Russell drained her only three of the game, to tie it at 53-53.

Leone scored again to put Ireton up 55-53, Alex Stipano’s layup gave Ireton a 4-point cushion, and shortly thereafter Leone again broke a tie to push the Cardinals back to a 59-58 lead.

A frantic final two minutes, with the Lions fouling the visiting Cardinals resulted in Ireton creeping away as Carroll could not close the gap on their opportunities from the free throw line nor from the field.  Aiden Phillips and Hannah Miller’s free throws were the final points of the evening as Ireton ended the game with their largest lead of the night.

Michelle Montgomery joined Leone in double figures with 13, Russell added 8, Stipano had 7.

Bishop McNamara visits the Cardinals Wednesday at 6pm, following a 4:30 JV contest. Working around semester exams, the Cardinals follow the Mustangs’ contest with a short bus ride on Friday night to Bishop O’Connell.

Cardinals hang tough before falling at Good Counsel

Senior Danielle Hatchett had 8 points in the Cardinals setback at Good Counsel.

Senior Danielle Hatchett had 6 points in the Cardinals setback at Good Counsel.

Bishop Ireton’s girls basketball team got off to a fast start, snatching a 12-8 lead after one quarter against first place Good Counsel before the Falcons regrouped and pulled away to a 62-45 WCAC win in Olney Tuesday.

Led by senior guard Alex Stipano’s 20 points, Ireton used an up tempo transition game to quickly grab a lead on the bigger, more physical Falcons.  The home team regrouped after that 8-point quarter, however, and outscored Ireton 19-8 in second to go to halftime with a 27-29 spread.

The third quarter was another struggle for the visiting Cardinals, with the Falcons patiently running their half court offense while slowing Ireton down, where the experienced Olney squad stalled Ireton in a 16-6 session. The offenses were cranked up in the final quarter with 38 points going on the scoreboard, 19 by each squad, but the damage had been done.

Junior Michelle Montgomery added 11 for the redbirds, CeCe Leone had 8 and Danielle Hatchett 6, while Good Counsel saw three players in double figures, led by Nicole Enabosi with 16.

Bishop Ireton falls to 11-8 on the year and heads to Harewood Road in DC and the start of the second half of the WCAC campaign on Friday when they go for a season sweep of the Lions of Archbishop Carroll.  The varsity-only affair tips off at 6pm.
