Top Ranked DeMatha’s Big Second Half sinks Cardinals

q_RFB2128The Cardinals (2-8, 0-5) fell to DeMatha (7-0, 4-0) on Tuesday, 84-34, despite Jeremy Guillaud putting a career-high 11 points on the scoreboard.  Bishop Ireton rallied after a slow start, scoring a game-best 14 points during the second quarter, but the Cardinals trailed 35-19 by the half.

Guillaud was a tough inside for the undersized Cardinals, making 80% (4-for-5) of shots attempted while also sinking 75% (3-for-4) of free throws attempted.  Also chipping in for the Cardinals were Nick Schmelzer (11 points, 1 rebound), Darius Hines (4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal), Chase Hill (3 points), Jamie Pasha (7 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal), Quintin Gilchrest (2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal) and Michael Everett (2 points, 3 rebounds).

12 Stags scored for the WCAC’s first-place squad, Markelle Fultz, the team’s leading scorer, had a game-high 15, while Thomas Bruce scored 12,  DJ Harvey had 10, and Kellon Taylor also added 10.  DeMatha outscored the home team 49-15 in the second half to race away to the lopsided win.

The Cardinals finished the game with 27 rebounds (12 offensive/15 defensive) and three steals.

Bishop Ireton heads to the Governor’s Challenge in Salisbury, Maryland, beginning on December 27th, with Sussex Tech at 4:15, and is slated for the 29th and 30th. The Cardinals will be returning to WCAC action on Friday, January 2d when the club heads to St. John’s for Friday night 7:30 tip off.

Washington Post names Nick Ducceschi first team allMet for Soccer

Senior Nick Ducceschi (7) was one of 7 Cardinals recognized by the WCAC coaches in voting for post season awards.

Senior Nick Ducceschi (7) was one of 4 Cardinals recognized by the Washington Post. Nick, a first team selection, was joined by 2d team Joey Faddoul, HM Preston Haugh and the girls’ Lilly Weber.

The Washington Post has selected four Cardinals for post season soccer honors this past week, highlighted by a first team, allMet honor for senior Nick Ducceschi.  The Post also named junior Joey Fadddoul for the second teamwhile juniors Preston Haugh and the girls’ Lilly Weber were both tapped for honorable mention in soccer.

For the men’s program, the three players named were the most in more than 20 years. Coming off a 14-5-2 campaign, one that saw the Cardinals sitting as high as second in the WCAC in the final week of the season, Bishop Ireton began to gain the respect not seen since the 1970’s and 80’s, when Coach Jon Norem played for the Cardinals.

The Post lauded Ducceschi, who scored a team-high five game-winning goals of the 11 he tallied in 2014, and always drew the opponent’s most dangerous player for his defensive assignment.

For Faddoul, the Cardinals’ leading scorer with 28 goals and team-leading 16 assists, the selection suggests more good things in store for Ireton, as they look ahead to 2015 with junior Preston Haugh, an honorable mention selection also returning to the squad.  Haugh, the squad’s play maker in the midfield, was perhaps Norem’s most versatile, reliable player; someone the coach could insert in a variety of positions and roles depending upon the opponent or situation.

Coming off another strong season with arguably their most challenging schedule, one that included McDonogh School, Archbishop Spalding, Visitation, as well as WCAC heavyweights Good Counsel and O’Connell, the record may not have suggested a banner season, but junior Lilly Weber anchored a balanced team of talented young players. Her 12 goals and 7 assists were team-high numbers for Coach Gino Leon.

Stone Bridge races past Cards in basketball

K Bethea 2014It may have been just another non conference game, the back end of two games in two days for the Cardinals (2-7, 0-4), but it was a monumental event for the Stone Bridge High School boys basketball program.  They had a big crowd on Saturday as they hosted the first visit ever by a WCAC basketball team anxious to evaluate their budding program against a visitor from the legendary basketball conference.  The host Bulldogs sent the faithful home happy with a 67-35 win over Bishop Ireton.

“We’re trying to build a program. To get a WCAC school in here and obviously win by the margin we did shows a lot of the energy and effort these kids put in since day one. They work and fight every day to get better.” said Stone Bridge head coach Corey Stitzel.

Ireton started slowly, falling behind 12-6 after one period of play. After the visitors grabbed a 2-0 lead, Stone Bridge junior Nick Barnes scored the game’s next 8 points, he would score 24 on the night, and the Bulldogs were off to the races.

Quint Gilcrest scored in the second period to pull the Cardinals within 16-14 before the hosts went on a 9-2 run to close the half with a 25-16 advantage.

If the Cardinals had any hope of closing the margin coming out in the second half, the Bulldogs scored the first 15 points of the third quarter and, for all intents and purposes, the game was out of reach at 40-16.  The period ended with the home team enjoying a 49-25 cushion.

In the loss,  Kyle Bethea scored 8 points,  also helping the effort for the Cardinals were Quintin Gilchrest (7 points, 3 rebounds), Jeremiah Brooks (4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block), Jamie Pasha (3 points, 4 rebounds), Michael Everett (3 points, 2 rebounds), Joey Hamer (3 points), Chase Hill (2 points, 2 rebounds) and Darius Hines (2 points, 2 rebounds).   The Cardinals finished the game with 27 rebounds (four offensive/23 defensive), one block, and four steals.

The Cardinals must regroup and host DeMatha Tuesday. The action begins at 2pm with the freshmen tilt while the varsity squads tip off at 5:30pm.  Following Christmas, Ireton will head to the Governor’s Cup tournament in Salisbury, Maryland.

St Albans tops Cardinals, 64-42

Pasha 2014The Cardinals (2-6, 0-4) fell to the Saint Alban’s on Saturday, 64-42, despite Jamie Pasha and Jeremiah Brooks each putting nine points on the scoreboard.

Bishop Ireton found themselves in a hole early, falling behind 13-2 after one period. Things got better for young redbirds, being outscored 16-13 in the second period,  and 14-13 in the third quarter, but the damage had been done early.

Though the Cardinals had a solid finish, adding 14 points in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough for a comeback.  Pasha led the charge for the Cardinals’s offense, scoring nine points, with three points during the fourth period. He also contributed three rebounds and one steal.

Also chipping in for the Cardinals were Jeremiah Brooks (9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block), Quintin Gilchrest (7 points, 5 rebounds), Chase Hill (6 points, 4 rebounds), Kyle Bethea (4 points, 1 rebound), Andrew Dihn (3 points, 2 rebounds), Joshua Cordoba (2 points) and Darius Hines (2 points, 3 rebounds).

St Albans (6-3) saw three players score in double figures, George Walker had a game-high 16, William Howell 13, and Brandon Galloway 12 for the home team.

The Cardinals finished the game with 35 rebounds (13 offensive/22 defensive), one block and two steals. Next up for Ireton is a trip Saturday to Loudoun County and more Bulldogs, this time at Stone Bridge High School.

Area’s top team wears down Cardinal girls

Cece Leone (31) had a season-high 11 points and 12 rebounds against top-ranked PVI Friday.

Cece Leone (31) had a season-high 11 points and 12 rebounds against top-ranked PVI Friday.

Paul VI came into Godley Gym the preseason favorite to win the WCAC title and did little to suggest they aren’t ready to do just that in a convincing 69-34 win Friday night.

Bishop Ireton came right after the favored Panthers, grabbing a 4-0 lead and the ballgame seesawed back and forth early, with point guard Paige Russell’s early 6 points keeping Ireton within 18-13 after one period of play.

Paul VI unloaded in the 19-5 second quarter however. With a smothering full court defense, the visiting Panthers began to collect turnovers.  They quickly transitioned those miscues into odd man rushes and easy layups as the home team scrambled to get back to defend.  Intermission saw the Fairfax squad sitting on a comfortable 37-18 advantage.

The Panthers’ skipper, Scott Allen, substituted liberally but played the same pressure defense and transition offense that built the lead and, in the third quarter, continued to expand the margin.  The lead ballooned to 56-27 after three periods, the Cardinals never able to score in double digits in the game’s final three quarters after scoring 13 to open the contest.

Senior CeCe Leone had a team-high 11 points to lead Ireton along with 12 rebounds. Juniors Paige Russell had seven, Michelle Montgomery 6 for the Cardinals (6-4, 1-3).  Paul VI was led by Jasmine Whitney with a game-high 24 and Kate Klimkiewicz added 11.

The team returns to action on Tuesday, December 23rd when they travel to Bladensburg to challenge Elizabeth Seton at 7pm.  Following Christmas, the redbirds will play in the Title IX tourney at the DC Armory beginning December 27th.

DJO outlasts Cardinal girls, 61-51

Senior Alex Stipano, who joined the 500 career point club last season, started the 2014-15 campaign with a game-high 20 point performance.

Senior Alex Stipano had a  game high 26 for Ireton against Bishop O’Connell Tuesday in Alexandria.

The matchup with rival Bishop O’Connell is always a physical, closely contested ballgame and Tuesday was no exception with the visiting Knights pulling away for a 61-51 win in Godley Gymnasium.

Bishop Ireton started strong, the area’s leading three-point shooter, senior Alex Stipano, draining her first three shots from beyond the arc and the clubs were knotted at 17-17 after one period of play.

The pace slowed in the second, with the Cardinals building a 4-point advantage heading in the the locker room, 29-25, thanks in part to another Stipano three as the period closed.

Bishop O’Connell came out of the locker room and forced three consecutive turnovers to quickly even the contest at 29-29 on their way to a 9-0 run that forced Ireton to regroup after a timeout.

The redbirds responded immediately with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game once again.  The game sat at 41-39 as the teams moved into the final quarter of action.

The Knights slowly pulled away, gaining a 52-46 margin with two minutes remaining. The Cardinals picked up a more desperate style of play, but O’Connell converted the resulting trips to the foul line and pulled away for the WCAC win.

Ireton’s Alex Stipano led all scorer’s with 26, Danielle Hatchett added 8 and CeCe Leone chipped in 6.  Jasmine Taylor led three Knights who scored in double figures with 16 while Janiya Clemmons had 12 and Katie Meckus 11.

The Cardinals (6-3, 1-2) host top-ranked Paul VI on Friday at Godley Gymnasium.

Carroll escapes Cardinals, 47-41

BIH-121418-19379509The Cardinals fell to Carroll on Wednesday, 47-41, with Jeremiah Brooks scoring a team-high 10 points. On a three-pointer from Nicolas, Carroll wrestled the lead from the visiting Ireton and clinched their win in the fourth quarter.

At the half, the Cardinals led 20-17 on the strength of a 14-4 run. But this wasn’t enough to overcome Carroll’s 30 points in the final two quarters of the game.  The Lions closed the deal with a 13-4 margin in the game’s final quarter.
