Champions!

Bishop Ireton, the 2014 WCAC girls' lacrosse champions

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals girls’ lacrosse team won their first WCAC title in history by beating the Good Counsel Falcons 17-7 yesterday in front of 1,429  at the University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field. It is the first conference championship in any sport since 2003 for Bishop Ireton High School when the BI girls’ softball team won the conference title.

Ireton came away with the decisive victory over Good Counsel due to a balanced scoring attack, a near stranglehold on draw controls, and a solid defensive effort. The Cardinals’ systematically picked apart the Falcons with superior passing, quick feet, and rapid, precise shots. Ireton kept up a relentless pressure on their opponents the entire game at both ends of the field all the way through to the end of the match. It was clear from the opening draw that Bishop Ireton was here to make a statement.

“It’s surreal. The feeling is just amazing right now,” Kaitlin Luzik said. “We kept telling each other this was our year, and we made it our year.”

Ireton got out to an early 3-0 lead; Good Counsel tied it at 4; but the Cardinals started a 10-1 run spanning the first and second halves at that point. Seven different BI players scored goals and seven different players got assists. Kelly Mathews had six goals-one assist; Kelly Larkin got four goals-two assists; Charlotte Sofield had three goals-three assists; Kaitlin Luzik, Kendall Cunningham, and Kate Carney each got one goal-one assist; Natalie Irwin scored one goal; and Kayla Duperrouzel notched two assists. Goalie Olivia Cole had seven saves.

“These girls are selfless and care about nothing other than helping each other be their best,” said Bishop Ireton coach Rick Sofield. “They are a true team.”

Last year the Cardinals lost in the WCAC final to Good Counsel 16-9 after leading 5-4 at halftime and we dumped in overtime in the 2009 championship by the Falcons.

Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. the WCAC champions, Bishop Ireton starts their quest for a VISAA state title with a quarterfinal game at Fannon Field on Cambridge Road in Alexandria against Norfolk Academy. If they win today, second seeded Ireton travels to Richmond to play the winter of #6 Bishop O’Connell at #3 Collegiate School  in a semifinal game on Friday, May 16 at 11am at Collegiate. The championship game will be 11am Saturday again on the campus of Collegiate School.

Cardinals Head to WCAC championships

Freshman Kayla Marshall (12) scored five goals against against Holy Cross.

The Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team defeated the Holy Cross Tartans yesterday 17-5 in a dominant semifinal WCAC playoff performance at both ends of the field. The Cardinals now play the Good Counsel Falcons in the WCAC girls’ lacrosse championship game for the second straight year Monday, May 12, 5:00 p.m., at the University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field. Admission is $10.

Ireton beat the Tartans with overwhelming draw control domination led by Kayla Duperrouzel, smart passing, and a very tough defense. The Cardinals led 4-1 early and 9-2 at halftime. Holy Cross could manage only three shots on goal in the first half and two of those were free position shots. Bishop Ireton’s patient offense chewed up the clock and looked for opportunities to strike. Turnovers plagued the Tartans throughout the game. In the second half BI was short two players at one point due to back-to-back yellow cards, but they played smart and never let Holy Cross mount a comeback.

Earlier this week Bishop Ireton defeated the Paul VI Panthers Tuesday afternoon 21-8 at Fannon Field during quarterfinal WCAC playoff action. After a slow start Ireton began to pull away towards the latter part of the first half and led 12-6 at halftime. Key to the victory were a balanced scoring attack that saw eight different Cardinals score goals and five different players notch assists; and a dominant draw control effort led by Duperrouzel.

Ireton girls end regular season with thrilling 12-11 win in double OT

Seniors Kendall Cunningham (above) and Olivia Cole came up big in season finale in Delaware Friday night under the lights. Cunningham had the game-winner in double overtime.

Bishop Ireton completed their regular-season on the road by defeating 12-11 in double overtime the tough defending Delaware state champion Cape Henlopen High School Vikings in Lewes, Delaware, on Friday night, May 2. The Cardinals fought through two early yellow cards and were down 8-7 at halftime, but never lost their focus and came out fighting in the second half.

Ireton’s senior goalie also successfully called for an illegal stick check late in the first half which took away an apparent Cape Henlopen goal. Senior attacker Kendall Cunningham came through big by scoring the winning goal in double overtime.

Six different Bishop Ireton players scored goals and three different players notched assists. Junior Kelly Mathews led the team offensively with five goals and two assists. Junior Kaitlin Luzik had two goals and three assists; Sophomore Kelly Larkin scored two goals; Cunningham and freshmen Kayla Duperrouzel, and Kayla Marshall notched one goal each; and sophomore Grace Fletcher got one assist. Cardinals season ends with 7-3 setback in WCAC quarterfinals

Bishop Ireton’s varsity season likely came to an end with a 7-3 setback at St John’s Sunday in the quarterfinals of the WCAC baseball playoffs.  The VISAA will select their field for state championship play later this month, but the Cardinals have not cracked the top 10 in the later stages of the season, making an invitation unlikely.

St John’s Brodie Leftridge got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed three runs over four innings. He struck out four, walked one and surrendered five hits.

Robert Corallo was the game’s losing pitcher. He allowed six runs in five innings, walked two and struck out four.  Five Cardinal miscues damaged the visitors all day.

St. John’s never surrendered the lead after the second inning, scoring one run on an error.   St. John’s increased its lead with three runs in the third. A error scored Brodie and AJ Lee for the inning’s first run. That was followed up by Josh Simon‘s single, scoring Justin Diggs.

A three-run fourth inning helped bring the Cardinals within one at 4-3. An RBI single by Ryan Scott and a two-run double by Chandler Wilder set off the Bishop Ireton Cardinals Varsity rally.  Finally, Brodie got Daniel Ward to ground out to end the threat.

St. John’s added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A clutch base hit scored Jake Bernstein to open the scoring in the frame.  St Johns, the regular season champs, move on to face Gonzaga College High School in a best-of-three semifinal format with the winner meeting the series survivor of Bishop O’Connell and Good Counsel for the 2014 WCAC title.

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference announced its  2014 all conference teams, player of the year, and coach of the year.  The WCAC recognized seven Cardinals on their honorable mention list, including Sam Ratner, Ryan Scott, Jimmy Swiger, Robert Corallo, Seth Scalsky, Sean Workman, and Kyle Delaney.  The player of the year was O’Connell sophomore Rafi Vazquez while Paul VI’s Jeff Nolan was voted the coach of the year.
