Bishop Ireton’s record-setting season continued its charmed run with a dramatic come-from-behind win over third seeded Collegiate School of Richmond 9-8 Friday on a last second goal by sopphomore Kelly Larkin.
The Cardinals broke out to a 2-0 advantage early only to see the host Cougars bounce back and score four unanswered goals before Ireton closed the margin to 4-3 at the intermission.
“They scouted us well, (Coach) Annie (Richards) had them well prepared to play. It was a tremendous lacrosse game.” said Ireton’s head coach, Rick Sofield.
The second period opened with the Cougars scoring the first two markers of the half to open their largest lead at 6-3. Slowly the Cardinals counterattacked closing to 6-5 before finally drawing even at 8-8 with 5 minutes remaining.
After 5 excuriating minutes of play for fans of both teams, Larkin, a 2014 second team, all-WCAC attacker, buried the game winner for the 2014 WCAC champs.
Bishop Ireton, 19-4 moves on to the VISAA Division I finals at 11am at Collegiate School where they look for their 20th win of the year when they face neighboring St. Stephens/St. Agnes School, winners over Flint Hill in the tourney’s other semifinal. The game will feature LaxPower’s number 2 team nationally, the Saints, against the number 8 ranked Cardinals.
