Ireton girls improve to 3-0, top Archbishop Spalding in lacrosse

Kaitlin Luzik (13) is one of Ireton's high scoring attackers in the early season contests.

The Cardinals girls’ lacrosse team won a tough game Saturday afternoon 14-9 in a continuously hard, cold rain in Severn, MD, against IAAM opponent Archbishop Spalding. Ireton came out firing early and led 7-1 in the first half before a highly skilled Spalding squad rallied to make the score 7-5 at the half.

Draw control and smart passing were keys to the eventual victory in the second half. Bishop Ireton’s patient offense chewed up the clock and looked for opportunities to strike. Spalding held steady for most of the second half but the Cavaliers were not able to narrow the Cardinals’ lead to any closer than a two-goal margin. Turnovers late in the game allowed BI to strike quickly and expand their lead to five goals.

Junior Charlotte Sofield had one goal and five key assists; freshman Kate Carney notched four goals and one assist; and junior Kelly Mathews had three goals and two assists. Also finding the back of the net, senior Kendall Cunningham and junior Kaitlin Luzik each had two goals and one assist; and sophomore Kelly Larkin scored two goals. Junior Christine Macey added an assist just when it was needed most. Senior goalie Olivia Cole came up big when it counted with eight saves.

In total during the three-game season so far, the balanced Bishop Ireton scoring attack has seen 17 different players score goals and 12 different Cardinals have notched assists. Defensively senior goalie Cole has 19 saves and the team has an overall 5.33 goals against average.

The Nike/US Lacrosse poll currently ranks the Cardinals at #19 in the country while the StudentSports.com FAB 50 national poll has Ireton holding steady at #13 in its latest edition. The team is scheduled to travel to Holy Cross for a key WCAC game Tuesday at 4pm while conference foe Bishop McNamara comes to Fannon Field on Wednesday. A visit by Flint Hill’s Huskies  to Fannon this coming Saturday afternoon caps off the Cardinals 10th Annual Lacrosse Day festivities.

Girls Lacrosse opens campaign with lopsided win

Senior Kendall Cunningham leads a veteran team that hopes to return to the WCAC finals in 2014, after falling just short in title game last season.

The Bishop Ireton(1-0, 1-0) girls’ lacrosse team came away with a decisive 20-2 season-opening victory over WCAC foe Elizabeth Seton at Fannon Field on Thursday, March 20. Weather conditions forced the game to be moved from Seton’s home field in Bladensburg, MD. The Cardinals overwhelmed the Roadrunners with a very balanced scoring attack, strong defense, and excellent passing.

Ireton jumped up 5-0 in the first three minutes and 16 Cardinals scored as Ireton opened the regular season with a conference win.  Kelly Larkin scored three goals and freshman Kayla Marshall tallied four points on two goals and two assists in the win.”

Ireton enters their 2014 campaign with high pre-season expectations. The Nike/US Lacrosse poll ranked the Cardinals pre-season #22 in the country and the StudentSports.com FAB 50 national poll has Ireton ranked #13 in their latest edition.

The pre-season analysis from StudentSports.com said: “The Cardinals have steadily improved in each of head coach Rick Sofield’s three seasons, going from a 12-9 record in 2011 to 15-8 in 2012 to 17-6 and a WCAC runner-up finish last year. With 10 returning starters…Bishop Ireton has the potential to have a breakout year.”

The team right now includes eight future NCAA women’s lacrosse players: seniors Olivia Cole (Florida) and Kendall Cunningham (Rhodes); juniors Charlotte Sofield (North Carolina), Kaitlin Luzik (Virginia), Natalie Irwin (Navy), and Kelly Mathews (Boston University); and sophomores Kelly Larkin (Navy) and Brittany Dolan (Penn State).

The Cardinals play four games in five days next week—Tuesday, March 25 vs. Bishop McNamara; Wednesday, March 26 vs. Georgetown Visitation; Friday, March 28 vs. St. Mary’s Ryken; and their first away game of the year Saturday, March 29 at Archbishop Spalding in Maryland. All regularly scheduled varsity home games start at 4:00 p.m. at Fannon Field on Cambridge Road in Alexandria, VA.

Upcoming key WCAC games include an away contest at Holy Cross on Tuesday, April 1; and a home game versus Good Counsel on Tuesday, April 8. The team also faces tough competition this year from out-of-region opponents including home games against teams from New York and Pennsylvania; and away games against teams from Georgia, California, Illinois, and Delaware.

Mustangs edge Ireton, 2-0 in Softball

Senior Susie Rhodes collected one of only 3 base hits in 2-0 setback Saturday to Bishop McNamara.

After scoring ten runs on Friday, the Ireton bats got quiet on Saturday afternoon as the redbirds fell to Bishop McNamara 2-0. The Mustangs scratched together a run in the second and added an insurance run in the fourth to complete the day’s scoring. McNamara’s Lori Irons picked up the win for Forestville visitors.

Ireton could not take advantage of another strong pitching performance from Susie Rhodes who struck out 8 while only giving up 2 earned runs. The offense could only scatter three hits with only a single runner reaching second base.

“We saw some improvement on defense today,” commented head coach Terri Pearson. “Overall, the pitchers are a bit ahead of the batters at this point in the season and I expect our bats to warm up soon.”

Ireton and McNamara meet again on Monday afternoon to kick off a full week of softball. The girls play host to Bishop O’Connell on Tuesday and Saint John’s on Friday before traveling to Richmond for a double header on Saturday.

Cardinals notch first conference win 10-0 at Holy Cross

Sophomore second baseman Molly Jeffers had a big day at the plate in the Cardinals win at Holy Cross.

The Bishop Ireton Softball team shut the door early on Holy Cross, capturing a 10-0 shutout victory on Friday. The win evens their season record at 1-1.

Ten runs in the first three innings allowed Ireton to put the game away early. In the first, a walk by Clara Boggs, a bases loaded walk by Susie Rhodes, a hit batsman and a fielder’s choice supplied the early offense.

The redbirds increased their lead with six runs in the third. A single by Molly Jeffers ignited the offense, scoring Dominique Gil. That was followed up by a Heather Pearson single, plating Angela Kammen.

Heather Pearson was hot from the plate for the Cardinals going 2-4, driving in one run and scoring two others. She singled in the first and third innings.

DeMatha too much for Cardinals in season opener

DeMatha’s Stags, a preseason favorite to be at or near the top of the WCAC boys’ lacrosse standings, did little to discount the lofty predictions with a convincing 17-1 win on Francis Fannon Field on Monday. It was the season opener for both squads.

As if the weather hadn’t hampered preseason preparations enough, the early season match up with one of hte area’s strongest programs wasn’t the prescription the Cardinals needed  as they look forward to an improved 2014 campaign.  Indeed, there will be  better days ahead for the Cardinals, but Monday it was simply a long afternoon against a tough opponent.

DeMatha, unofficially, was 21 for 22 on faceoffs and held a huge advantage in shots on goal.  Cardinal goalkeeper Ryan Verducci was a bright spot for the home team as he opened the game with three quality saves and logged more than a dozen for the game.

Kevin Abbed broke the ice for Ireton with his goal in the third period, one of seven shots the Cardinals launched in the game.  Steve Partlow, Michael Begelow, and Dylan Stein all tallied three times for the visiting Stags.

The Cardinals take to the road Thursday when they visit St Andrew’s Episcopal School.  Faceoff in the varsity contest is slated for 4pm.

The Cardinals’ junior varsity lose an exciting 7-5 contest in the night cap.

Falcons Edge Cardinal golfers in season opener

Junior Kevin Lewis rams home his par putt on #3 at Argyle while partner Dominic Wagner looks on.

Coach Pete Davey’s  rebuilding Bishop Ireton Cardinal Golf Team traveled to Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring to take on the Falcons of Good Counsel on Monday, March 10th for the first match of the season.

The Cardinals, after graduating five starting seniors last year, have an almost totally new lineup for the 2014 campaign. Led by senior captain Jordan Zelasko and junior standouts Dominic Wagner and Kevin Lewis, the Cardinals faced an uphill battle against the Falcons, one of the preseason favorites in the WCAC.

Although the Falcons eventually prevailed in stroke play by a 217 – 228 count, Ireton battled and kept it close until the last group came in.  Lewis and Zelasko were low scorers for the Alexandria visitors.  Wagner, Jake Murray, Billy Marrin, and Jude Hetrick all started for the Cardinals.
