The Knights used a fast first quarter start to gain a lead and held on through the second half to win their first conference game of the year, 53-33 over Bishop Ireton in Arlington Tuesday night.
Ireton sophomore Michelle Montgomery had a game-high 16 points for the Cardinals, but the visitors couldn’t overcome a 33-16 halftime deficit in falling to 0-3 in WCAC play. Hannah Miller added four as did Heather Pearson, Paige Russell had 3 while Isabelle Kendal, Cece Leone, and Kellen Phillips each added a basket.
Nadia Davidson led Bishop O’Connell with 11 and Gillian Gerton scored in double figures with 10. Seven other Knights tallied points for the home squad.
O’Connell built a 16-7 lead after one period of play and outscored the Cardinals 17-9 in the second quarter to build comfortable halftime advantage. The clubs battled evenly throughout the third period and neither squad could add many points in the game’s final quarter as the home team cruised in with the win.
“We are doing some good things right now, we just want to be more consistent. That will come as we learn each other.” said Coach Derek Campbell.
The Cardinals finish up their week with a triple header matinee at top ranked Paul VI on Saturday with a freshmen game kicking off the day noon, ending with a varsity tipoff at 3:30pm in the Panther Athletic Center in Fairfax.
