WCAC baseball accolades for Cardinals

Cardinals see 8 players receive all WCAC accolades, including 2 first teamers, 2 second team, 4 honorable mentions.

As the spring season winds down, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) has released the 2013 baseball all-conference selections, including a pair of Cardinals to the first team, and two more to the second team.

Senior Cody Hagenston, a four-year varsity pitcher, was the Cardinals’ “go-to” guy in big games for Coach Mike Gallagher. He responded by leading Ireton in wins, despite often getting little in the way of offense.  The lanky right hander heads off to Randolph Macon Academy in the fall.
Ireton’s other first team selection, centerfielder Scott Schwartz was the rebirds offensi ve leader in a number of categories in 2013, including home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage, and had a rifle of an arm from the outfield. The 2013 graduate is off to Guilford College to play baseball for the Quakers next spring.
Corey Phillips was a bulldog behind the plate for the Cardinals for 4 years.  The quarterback of the team on the field he was the leadoff hitter for Ireton and a leader in the dugout.  Phillips erased an impressive a60% of base stealers.  Phillips will play for Marymount next year in Arlington, Virginia.  The WCAC selected Phillips to the second team, all conference team.
John Todd was the 4th senior tapped for all conference honors, also as a second squad honoree as a utility player.  Gallagher suggested that was the perfect description of the senior. Hitting second in the lineup he was a solid third baseman with a .280 batting average.  Todd also served as the Ireton closer, leading the Cardinals in saves as well as recording a 3-1 record when he assumed a starting role on the pitching staff late in the campaign.  Todd will join Schwartz in North Carolina at Guilford in the fall.
Honorable mention recognition was also given to seniors Nick Tangora, Andrew Selby, Ben Judd, and junior Joe Bagnerise.  Tangora pitched and played first base for the redbirds, Selby patrolled center field,  Judd split time between the outfield and the mound, while Bagnerise played shortstop for Ireton.

Godley Gym facelift highlights summer upgrades

30 years of service come to an end as bleachers are disassembled in Bishop Ireton's Fr. Godley Gym June 12th. Summer renovations include a paint job, new windows, fresh floor finish, and a new seating system.

The sound of a voice or a dropped scrapper echoes through a stripped bare Father Godley Gym as summer vacation dawns on the Bishop Ireton campus, renovations already well underway. The School begins the second phase of HVAC improvements, this year to the “athletic wing” of the building, and athletic facilities also are in line for upgrades.

Chief among the sports upgrades is new seating in Godley Gym.  Athletic director Bill Simmons reported that a Hussey system, with individual seats, aisles, and handrails will replace the steel benches that have occupied Godley Gym for more than 30 years.  Those bleachers are already gone, steel headed to recycle and other parts to the landfill. The new gym will seat a maximum 850 for assemblies and 829 when configured for athletic contests, including upgraded seating area for season ticket holders equipped with cup holders.

The empty gym is getting a fresh coat of paint in mid June, followed by new windows later in the month. Following the summer’s sports camps, Weyer Floors will put a fresh finish on the 9-year old floor in early August followed by the installation of the seating system by TJ Distributors of Forest Hill, Maryland.  Simmons expects the installation to be completed by the start of the 2013-14 school year on Aug 25.

While workers are busy inside the building, Fannon Field patiently awaits the arrival of a new LED lit wireless scoreboard in July.  The 18 foot by 12 foot electronic board by the Nevco Company of Illinois replaces another aging item, the Daktronics incandescent bulb scoreboard on the west end of the field.  Daktronics announced in 2011 it would no longer service these aging boards as the old light bulbs head toward obsolescence.  The new board will feature more options including sport-specific information, like soccer corner kicks and shots on goal, and even penalty timer for lacrosse.

The School’s installation of new windows, central heating and air conditioning, painting, and improved lighting also will impact the school’s weight room, girls’ and boys’ locker rooms, as well as the sports medicine areas.  Gone are the “window shakers” as the portable air conditioners were affectionately labeled, but also the new HVAC system will improve conditions in the shower rooms and dressing areas, particularly in the girls’ locker room, which will also see the additon of storage shelves and stick racks.

“We think these improvements will be very positive for our School.” said Simmons. “The Board of Governors, Athletic Booster Club, and Mr Hamer continue to be very supportive of the athletic program.  Everyone is contributing this summer, including the booster club.  After providing the sideline team chairs last winter, the Boosters will pick up the costs of the Fannon Field scoreboard and Godley Gym scoring table.  These are much needed improvements that keep our facilities top notch.  I may be the only guy here that can’t wait for School to start, but I think our students are going to be as excited as me when they see these projects finished.”

Pearson Recognized by Wash Post all Met with honor mention accolades

Junior Heather Pearson (above) led Ireton in hitting in 2013, both for average and power.

Junior Heather Pearson switched from duties as the varsity catcher to the infield and the new surroundings seemed to be much to her liking as the slick fielding, hard hitting Pearson was named to the Washington Post’s all Met honorably mentioned list on Friday, June 7th.

Pearson led the Cardinals in nearly every offensive category and was nearly water tight on defense. Hitting well above .500, she could also hit for power, evidence her game-winning, walk off grand slam home run against Bishop McNamara.  The WCAC noticed and selected her to the first team, all conference listing.

Ireton looks for the Alexandria native, daughter of Mr & Mrs. David Pearson, to be an anchor of the 2014 Cardinals as they look for another winning campaign.

Crew of Rowers head to Collegiate Programs in Fall

Great season, great seniors mark the 2013 rowing campaign as crew has nationally recognized season.

Coach Eric Gehrke’s senior rowers completed their high school careers with the best performance ever by the Cardinals. From dominating performances in the local area to impressive finishes at the prestigious Stotesbury Regatta  and US Rowing’s national championships, Bishop Ireton set new standards for the program in 2013.  For a number of graduating seniors, the book is closed on their high school careers, but another chapter is yet to be written for the class of 2013.

Among the rowers headed off to collegiate rowing programs are Catherine Babiec to the Ivy League’s Princeton University, Joey Gorman to George Washington University with a crew scholarship, Allison Lee heads to Boston College, who also received scholarship aid, as did Josh Martini, on his way to be at Badger at the University of Wisconsin.  Lyndsay Martini will join the defending national champions, the University of Virginia with a scholarship offer in hand and Kevin Shoop joins the men’s 2012 defending national champs in Seattle, at the University of Washington.

“I am very proud of our senior class,” Head Coach Eric Gehrke said, “as they set goals for themselves as underclassmen – individual ones and team ones. At this point, they have gone far beyond what they hoped to achieve individually and we hope to continue their success on a team-wide basis. I know they will all do a great job at their college programs in the coming years.”

Cardinals honored by Alexandria Sportsman’s Club

The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club honored six Bishop Ireton athletes and a coach at their 58th annual awards gala at the Westin Hotel in Alexandria Wednesday night.  President Jeff Murphy welcomed athletes and their families from the four city high schools, Bishop Ireton, Episcopal, St Stephens/St Agnes School and TC Williams and introduced Channel 7’s sports reporter Britt McHenry as the evening’s guest of honor.

The club recognized 25 athletes from the four schools as well as a City Rec League athlete.   They also lauded Ireton’s Neil Berkman, men’s basketball coach, as their coach-of-the-year for his 18-14 season, the most wins by an Ireton basketball team since 1986.  Berkman’s squad pulled off the upset of the metro area high school in the WCAC’s quarterfinal round when the 8th seeded Cardinals upset the Conference’s undefeated, top-seeded Gonzaga by nine.

The Cardinals also pulled a coup’ of sorts by snaring both the men’s and women’s rower of the year awards. Seniors Joey Gorman, headed to George Washington University, and Princeton-bound Catherine Babiec, were tapped by the Club for recognition.  The teams had their strongest season ever, the girls ranked 5th in the varsity 8+ boat while the boys earned a 12th place ranking in the US Rowing national championships.

Senior Mark Porter, Ireton’s rock solid number one player was named the City’s golfer of the year. Porter led the Cardinals to a winning season, capped by dual meet wins over DeMatha and Landon. The IAC defending champs suffered their first setback in 2 years at the hands of the Cardinals and the win over the Stags propelled the Cards into the championship flight of the WCAC tournament.

Emily Quinn capped her four-year swimming career on Cambridge Road with the women’s swimmer of the year award. The versatile Quinn, who also played softball, swam every stroke and nearly every distance for the Cardinal swim and dive team, keying the girls team to a NOVA Catholic team championship, as well as a 17-1 dual meet record and 4 years as the City team champions.

Adrienne Maday, a junior, won the women’s soccer player of the year award.  The midfielder with a cannon shot and the ability to find the open man paced the Cardinals to another top echelon finish in the WCAC and a stay in the Washington Post’s top 10 listing of women’s high school programs.

Freshman Stephanie Lin captured the women’s tennis award for her play at number 4 singles and number 2 doubles. Lin had the most wins for the Cardinals this season and advanced to the WCAC championship match in number 4 singles before falling.

The Club selected Mike Sloper, father of the Cardinals’ tennis coach, Katie Sloper-Johnson as their Sportsman of the Year for his tireless devotion to the Club and willingness to take on any task, large or small, to get the job done.

In her remarks to the crowd, Ms McHenry related how her journey as a collegiate soccer player from rural Florida opened doors for her in journalism and, once the door was opened, her ability to take advantage of the opportunity, just like a good soccer player would, has propelled her to a rewarding career in Washington in sports journalism. She encouraged the athletes in attendance to use those lessons and successes in sports to move them ahead in life.

5 Cardinals poised to move on to College baseball in fall, 2013

Bishop Ireton's class of 2013 has five heading to college baseball. From left to right, John Todd, Scott Schwartz, Cody Hagenston, Coach Mike Gallagher, Cody Phillips, and Andrew Selby

As Bishop Ireton prepares to send one of their largest classes of senior baseball players off to college, five Cardinals will not pack their gloves in the attic trunk but will continue to play next year. The five, John Todd, Scott Schwartz, Cody Hagenston, Corey Phillips,  and Andrew Selby will give baseball at “the next level” a try in the fall.

Todd and Schwartz will remain teammates as they head to Greensboro, North Carolina, to play for the Quakers of Guilford College.  Pitcher/first baseman Cody Hagenston will call on his former teammates at Guilford when he joins the Yellow Jackets in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s Randolph Macon College.  The final players heading to a college program are catcher Corey Phillips, who becomes a charter member of Marymount University’s new baseball program in Arlington, Virginia, and Andrew Selby.  For Selby, a four-year varsity player, George Washington University will welcome the Cardinal outfielder to the Colonial’s program.

“Very proud of these players.” said athletic director, Bill Simmons.  “They have had great high school careers with the Cardinals and I am sure they will be welcome additions to the schools they selected.  As good as they are as players, they are also great examples of our student-athletes here. I am sure they will be contributing members of their colleges on and off  the diamond.”
