Unfamiliar Waters, Familiar Strong Results for Ireton rowers

After retaining the Cindy Cole Cup and Bishop’s Cup last weekend, the Bishop Ireton rowers entered the less friendly waters of the Occoquan reservoir to take on unfamiliar Northern Virginia HS teams. Rowing in the Al Urquia regatta on Saturday, they did something for the first time; both varsity 8’s made it to the finals.

The men’s varsity eight won a close race (o.4 seconds) over James Madison to win the Varsity 8+ event, the first time an Ireton varsity boat has won an event on the Occoquan. The womens’ varsity matched strokes with the nationally ranked women from Madison HS but lost out in the last 500 meters and were nipped out at the end by 0.3 seconds to Pittsburgh-based Oakland Catholic HS.

The teams’ performances were judged by their coaches as a good measure of the competition in the upcoming championship races; Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association, and the national Stotesbury Cup to be held in Philadelphia.

Witter Fields Get Booster Club-donated Scoreboards

Workers install one of two Nevco multi-use scoreboards at the new Witter Street rectangular fields. The scoreboards were donated last year by the Bishop Ireton Athletic Booster Club.

The finishing touches are being added to the City of Alexandria’s newest park, the Witter Street fields, just blocks from Bishop Ireton. One key final addition is the installation of scoreboards donated last year by the Bishop Ireton Athletic Booster Club.

The  Club’s contribution, spearheaded by Club presidents Dan Babiac and incumbent Steve Lucas, will provide competition-ready fields with the capacity to host night games throughout the year.  The Club provided two Nevco multi-use boards that will serve a variety of sports.  The Club provided more than $10,000 for the project, one that cements the strong relationship between the School and the City of Alexandria. They are the third and fourth such contribution, Ireton’s softball team utilizes the board installed two years ago at Luckett Field, and the baseball scoreboard at Frank Mann Field is the envy of the WCAC.

The Witter Street Fields now host a number of organizations and sports.  For the Cardinals, lacrosse practices after school are the School’s main need this spring. Athletic director Bill Simmons suggested soccer will make use of the fields for practice and even some games.  “We work closely with the city and we are discussing the possibility of being able to play some games at the Witter Street fields in the fall. We are working now to play one or more at night as well.”

Tangora, Bagnerise ground Eagles on Ireton Senior Day, 3-1

8 seniors and their parents line third base for the national anthem as part of Senior Day festivities at Frank Mann Field Saturday.

Junior Joe Bagnerise went 2-2 with a home run and a spectacular inning-ending, run-saving catch at shortstop to  send the Bishop Ireton Cardinals to a 3-1 victory, and regular season sweep, over the Gonzaga Eagles on Saturday at Frank Mann Field.

Bagnerise homered in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth inning.  He also made a diving grab on a sure base hit up the middle saving a Gonzaga run and ending the Eagles’ 5th inning rally, stranding a pair of Eagles.

It was exactly what senior Nick Tangora needed as he scattered 4 Gonzaga hits to gain a complete game win in his final pitching start for Ireton in the WCAC regular season.  Tangora painted the plate with a lively fast ball and showed the visiting Eagles enough off speed pitches to induce a number of fly balls but yielded only a run in the 2nd.  Gonzaga, following the identical script from the earlier meeting at Hamilton Field, took the early 1-0 lead in the second when they  scored their only run on the day on an RBI single by Dorris.

Bagnerise tied the game with his sole homer and Ireton tacked on two more runs with a pair of doubles  in the home half of the 4th with two outs. Following the home run, Cody Hagenston walked, Todd Cunningham then doubled to left, scoring Hagenston.  Corey Phillips followed with another double, plating Cunningham before starter Will Bollinger got out of the inning with a strike out.

Ireton bounces back with 8-2 baseball win

Senior Scott Schwartz had a big night at the plate in Ireton's 8-2 win.

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals bounced back from a shutout loss to St Johns,  jumping out to an early lead on St. Mary’s Ryken Knights and captured an 8-2 victory on Thursday at Frank Mann Field.

With five runs in the first three innings, the  Cardinals left no doubt about the eventual outcome.  An RBI single by Nick Tangora and an RBI double by Scott Schwartz in the first inning fueled the Bishop Ireton offense early.  Schwartz racked up four RBIs on three hits for the redbirds.

John Todd got the win for the home team thanks to six strikeouts. The Cardinals’ pitcher tossed five innings of shutout ball and allowed only five hits.

Ireton  matched their three-run third inning with three more in the fifth. In the third, Bishop Ireton scored on a three-run home run by Schwartz, bringing home Andrew Selby and Kyle Delaney.

When do you work on your annotated?

Nick Tangora (left) with his father at the hockey national championships

Many Cardinal athletes are multi-sport competitors and many have  drama, music, jobs, and loads of homework.  Normally, a senior preparing for graduation has an extra full “plate” trying to negotiate their final year, including the dreaded anotated bibliography.  So, when someone heads to graduation with a grade point average in the clouds, plays a varsity sport every season, THEN finds time for more outside of Bishop Ireton, you look twice.

Bishop Ireton’s Nick Tangora, a first baseman/pitcher on the Cardinals baseball team was also a two-time all star for the Ireton ice hockey team. He added membership on the U19 Ashburn travel ice hockey team to his resume and a national championship!

Nick went with the Ireton baseball team to Charleston on Easter Sunday to play in the High School tournament. He pitched Monday and then got on a plane and headed north to Hartford CT for the USA Hockey National Tournament to play for the Ashburn Xtreme.   Tangora, the Bishop Ireton Hockey captain, participated first in getting to the Finals and then winning yesterday scoring a key goal in the 5-1 victory over the Florida Junior Panthers. Playing over five days against teams from Florida, California and Connecticut they went undefeated.  This is the first time that the Club has ever gotten to the finals after 16 attempts and a First for a Northern Virginia team to ever win the U18AA USA Hockey National Championship.

Tangora was also recognized earlier in the school year by the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club as their athlete of the month for ice hockey.

Mathews late tally gives Cardinals thrilling 7-6 lax win over defending WCAC champs

Sophomore Kelly Mathews' third goal was the game winner with :18 remaining in upset of Holy Cross on Friday.Kelly Mathews found the upper left corner of the net with only 18 seconds to play, breaking a 6-6 tie and giving the home team a possibly season defining win on Fannon Field Friday.

The Cardinals, playing without three regular players due to injury, looked to be in trouble with the defending WCAC champions, winners of 5 straight over Ireton, visiting Fannon Field tied for the lead in conference play at 4-0.

“This type of difficulty is something we try to approach as an opportunity for another player.” said Ireton’s Rick Sofield. “We talked about that at practice during the week.”  Sofield praised his goalkeeper, junior Oliva Cole, who he suggested played perhaps her best game of the season with 9 saves.  He also singled out Hayley Snell, a sophomore pressed into action Friday for her forced turnover and ground ball as well as a key switch on defense, one of the many little things coaches pick up in the course of game.  In tight games, little things matter, pointed out the third year Cardinal mentor.

And, tight was an apt description. Sophomore Charlotte Sofield opened the game’s scoring with 3:18 gone to make it 1-0 Ireton. Holy Cross answered 61 seconds later when Courtney Linter scored the first of two goals she would score for the Tartans on the windy, storm-threatening afternoon.  Ireton would then take the biggest lead of the day when Sofield and Mathews scored at at 5:17 and 13:17 to make it a 3-1 Ireton advantage.

Cristina McCarthy scored twice for the Tartans with 10:35 left in the first half, then again with 9:51 left.  Linter tallied for the third straight Tartan score to give them their first lead at 4-3.  Mathews countered for Ireton with 2:41 left in the opening half and the teams adjourned to the intermission tied at 4-4.

McCarthy broke the stalemate 3:12 into the second period and again put the purple and black clad visitors in front, 5-4.  The Cardinals Natalie Irwin made a spectacular shot, unassisted, to tie the game and pump new life into the home team.  Sofield gave Ireton the lead with 11:28 remaining in the game before McCarthy again tied the contest, setting up the dramatic finish.

Ireton played a deliberate, patient style on offense and the Tartans seemed content to defend the arc whenever the redbirds advanced toward the goal. Following a Cardinal turnover, it was the Tartans turn to burn clock setting up their final attack.  Enter the strong play of Oliva Cole, making the biggest save of the game and sending the ball down field to Sofield.

Sofield sped down field, drawing a crowd and opening the field for classmate Kelly Mathews to make the final goal with only :18 seconds remaining.  Ireton’s Cole had to make a heady hustle play to save an errant pass with time running down and the ball heading out of bounds on the Ireton end line to keep the clock running and secure the win, a moment before the Tartans shot the ball into the empty net.

The win improves Ireton to 9-4, 3-1 in WCAC play, half game behind Holy Cross (10-5, 4-1) for second behind Good Counsel.  The Tartans face the Falcons Wednesday while Ireton has Ryken, Seton, McNamara, and O’Connell remaining in conference action.
