The Cardinals sent state runners up Jimmy Keegan and Nick Womack to the prestigious National Preps wrestling tournament at Lehigh University Friday. Keegan at 285 and Womack at 138 pounds had qualified for the event based upon their top 4 finishes in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s championship tournament a week earlier.
Womack, a senior, lost his opening match 17-2 to Spencer Slishman of Northfield Mount Hermon of Mount Hermon, Massachusetts. He posted a 6-3 win over Ben Stein of St Johns of Houston, Texas, in the consolation round before being eliminated by Brendon Walker of Woodberry Forest School, 6-2.
The burly Keegan also lost in his first round matchup 2-0 to Eli Feliciano, a senior from St Benedict’s of New Jersey. He pinned Sheldon Johnson, a junior from Baltimore’s Gilman School in 2:58 to advance in the consolation brackets. Keegan followed that win with another fall over senior Duane Doku of Randolph Macon Academy in 1:44. Miles Brown, a sophomore from DC’s Sidwell Friends School ended Keegan’s high school wrestling career with a 5-1 win over Ireton’s highest placing grappler at the National, state, and WCAC tournaments.
