St Johns outlasts Ireton in WCAC semifinals, 56-44

Third team, all Conference Dan Noe led Ireton with 11 points, many inside against a physical Cadet defense.

They gave no quarter and they asked for none as Bishop Ireton battled favored St Johns (20-9, 11-7) for four quarters before the Cadets finished the game on an 11-4 run to win 56-44 at American University’s Bender Arena Sunday. The setback ended the Cardinals’ impressive run in the Conference tourney as the 8th seed appearing in its first final 4.

“I’m very proud of our team.” commented a disappointed Neil Berkman.  “They played hard, they played a good game. St Johns is a very good team.  This is a great league.”  The Cadets advance to face Bishop O’Connell Tuesday night in the championship after the Knights escaped with a one-point double overtime win over PVI in the nightcap.

Dan Noe led Ireton offensively with 11 points, Taylor McHugh had 10.  Louie Khouri and Patrick Moseh each scored 7 and Ty Quarles added 5 in the loss. Da’von Wiley had the Cardinals remaining 4 points for the day.  St Johns was led by first team, all conference player, Tre Campbell with 15, second teamer, Darian Bryant had 13, and first team performer Darian Anderson added 9.

The Cardinals carried a one point lead into the second quarter when Noe drained a jumper to end the period, 11-10. The game stayed tight throughout the second act as St Johns, playing a relentless defense, bulled to a 25-22 advantage at the halfway point.  A Darian Bryant three late in the third quarter gave St Johns a 35-28 bulge, but Moseh responded with a three of his own, Wiley converted a layup and Ireton had again closed the margin to 35-33.  The Cadets James Mitchell scored his only field goal of the game to close the third quarter and send the 4th seeded St John’s into the final period with a 37-33 advantage.

A Louie Khouri bucket pulled Ireton to within 45-41 in the 4th period, but a pair of Mitchell free throws, a Bryant basket, and a pair of Anderson free throws began to widen the lead and the desperate Cardinals found the clock as big an adversary as the pressure St Johns applied to every shot with a 50-41 margin. The parade of white-jerseyed Cadets to the charity stripe piled up the lead and Ireton couldn’t “buy a basket” down the stretch until Khouri banked in a three in the game’s final moments for a 56-44 final.

The loss sends Bishop Ireton (17-14, 6-12) home to host a first round VISAA playoff game with the Potomac Panthers on Tuesday as the state’s 5th seeded team.  Tipoff Tuesday is 6pm.  Potomac School gave Ireton all they could handle in December, leading the Cardinals by 11 at intermission and only a furious second half rally allowed the Cardinals to escape with a 49-47 win.  It will be the final home appearance for seniors Louie Khouri, Da’von Wiley, and Richie Kamtchoum.  The winner gets Benedictine in Richmond on Wednesday.  Admission for the VISAA playoff game is $5/person, school-age and above. No season passes or booster complimentary tickets are valid for this state-sponsored contest.

Cardinals stun top ranked Gonzaga 67-58 in WCAC quarterfinals

Da'von Wiley (4) is one of four seniors the Cardinals will lose from a 17-win ball club.

It looked like so many games Cardinal fans have seen before. Ireton works their way to a halftime lead, favored opponent regroups and roars back with a big third quarter then pulls away.  Well, that played out for three quarters, but the underdogs didn’t follow the script in the final period, outscoring the undefeated regular season champion Gonzaga 21-12 to upset the favored Eagles 67-58 at Gallaudet Saturday.

Dan Noe hit 3 of his 16 points in the first period’s last seconds and Ireton held an 18-16 lead.  They would outscore the Eagles 16-8 in the second quarter with a patient offense, a disciplined zone defense, and hard work on the glass.

Coming out in the third, Gonzaga stepped up their defensive pressure and went hard to the basket, resulting in a 22-12 advantage and a tie game at 46-46 heading into the game’s final period.  The Ireton faithful fidged in their chairs, and the majority of fans arriving for the following games stopped their conversations and turned to the final period.

Louie Khouri opened the quarter with a three, Glover responded with a layup. The lead see sawed back and forth with neither team gaining any space, WCAC player of the year, Kris Jenkins drawing attention, missing shots and starting to foul. The game went under 2 minutes with the Cardinals grabbing a 56-54 lead. Gonzaga tied the game only to see Taylor McHugh respond with a 3.

Eagles missed two chances in close, then fouled Khouri. The senior made both and the lead was 5. Jenkins scored for Gonzaga to make it 61-58, but the Eagles would not score again as Ireton began the parade to the free throw line. Khouri corralled a long rebound with only seconds remaining and sprinted alone for the layup as the white-jerseyed regular season stood in their offensive end watching the play, their spirit apparently broken.

With Indiana’s Tom Crean in attendance, Moseh led all scorers with 20 points.  The Eagles Jenkins had 18 in the loss. Khouri and Noe each had 16 points for Ireton, while McHugh had 7 and Wiley 6. Ty Quarles added a bucket.  Crawford, an IU recruit,  scored 16, and Blackmon contributed 10 for Gonzaga.

For Bishop Ireton, they have little time to celebrate, St Johns awaits a 4:30pm date at American University’s Bender Arena Sunday.  Admission to the games is $10 per person.

Witter Street Fields Open as Spring workouts begin!

End zone view of Witter Street Fields, shown here as Ireton's boys lax practice on a blustery February afternoon.

Alexandria’s Witter Street fields opened to Bishop Ireton and the public Wednesday as the boys lacrosse teams took to the new artificially turfed pitch to begin tryouts for the 2013 season.

“This is just great!” gushed Ireton head coach, Jon Reed as the more than 50 boys worked out on their first day of tryouts.  “You can’t beat this, I’ve never had so much space to work with,” added junior varsity head coach, Mike Blaine.

The Witter Street project is more than ten years in the making, part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project.  Because of that association, the normal process of construction was even more complex.   The fields were built to address the City’s loss of Jones Point fields with the construction of the new bridge.  The current park has two rectangular, artificially turfed playing fields, a Bermuda grass softball field on the far east end of the complex, and approximate 100 vehicle parking lot on the far west end of the facility.  Once the project was completed, the ownership was transferred to the Virginia Department of Transportation, who then went through the process of transferring the control to the City of Alexandria. Just adding the scoreboards from Ireton required a request for a change to the scope of the project to be sent to Richmond.

Lights are another important addition to the recreational space that sits behind Duke Street businesses such as the Land Rover dealership and the animal hospital on the north side of the park and the railroad lines on the south side.  Two scoreboards donated by the Bishop Ireton Athletic Booster Club remain in the City’s warehouse awaiting award of an installation contract.

“Our boosters donated the scoreboards last May,” commented Ireton athletic director Bill Simmons. “I know it is driving them nuts at the City parks and rec offices, the contract to install the scoreboards is still not awarded, the traffic signs have not been installed, but the turf has been completed for nearly a year.  No one knows how much these fields are needed more than our friends in the City recreation business.”

While the playing areas on the rectangular fields was finished some time ago, the Bermuda grass has been carefully grown, the pavilions, including heated rest rooms, are now completed, and the lights carefully aligned to light the fields but not the neighboring living areas.  The streets and parking areas are finished, though signs to direct traffic flow remain to be placed.  There are no plans for seating areas in the park, but officials envision player benches on the north side of the field and spectators to sit along the south side of the fields, noting they will not have to cross the fields and will be closer to rest room facilities and pavilions.

“One key aspect for our excited community is to be aware of the traffic plan.” said Simmons. “When you enter the park, a lot for parking will be on your right.  Fans can park on the right side of the street around the fields, but traffic is one way flowing into the park and round the fields in a counterclockwise manner.  You come in and go down past the softball field and back up the north side (Duke Street) of the drive to return to the Witter Street entrance.”

Ireton will have use on the west field which is the closest field to the parking area from 3-6pm Monday through Friday in the spring. That field is lined for soccer, girls and boys lacrosse.  TC Williams will have girls soccer on the east field and the Titans will call the new softball field home for the 2013 season.

“It’s been a long time coming.” said Simmons. “This is going to a big help to our spring and fall athletic teams, in fact, this was the biggest factor in our ability to add field hockey to the athletic program.  The City of Alexandria and Mac Slover in the recreation office has been unbelievably supportive of Bishop Ireton on this project and with all our programs. We really owe them a big ‘thank you’!”

National Preps appearance ends 2012-13 wrestling campaign

Senior Nick Womack joined Jimmy Keegan as Ireton's representatives at the 2013 National Preps in Lehigh PA

The Cardinals sent state runners up Jimmy Keegan and  Nick Womack to the prestigious National Preps wrestling tournament at Lehigh University Friday.   Keegan at 285 and Womack at 138 pounds had qualified for the event based upon their top 4 finishes in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s championship tournament a week earlier.

Womack,  a senior, lost his opening match 17-2 to Spencer Slishman of Northfield Mount Hermon of Mount Hermon, Massachusetts.   He posted a 6-3 win over Ben Stein of St Johns of Houston, Texas, in the consolation round before being eliminated by Brendon Walker of Woodberry Forest School, 6-2.

The burly Keegan also lost in his first round matchup 2-0 to Eli Feliciano, a senior from St Benedict’s of New Jersey. He pinned Sheldon Johnson, a junior from Baltimore’s Gilman School in 2:58 to advance in the consolation brackets. Keegan followed that win with another fall over senior Duane Doku of Randolph Macon Academy in 1:44.  Miles Brown, a sophomore from DC’s Sidwell Friends School ended Keegan’s high school wrestling career with a 5-1 win over Ireton’s highest placing grappler at the National, state, and WCAC tournaments.

Bishop Ireton earns date with top ranked Gonzaga, 73-65

Junior Dan Noe, a third team, all WCAC selection, scored 17 against Carroll in the Cards first round win Thursday.

The Cardinals (16-13, 6-12) shook off the WCAC first round nerves with a 73-65 win over Archbishop Carroll in Alexandria Thursday.  It was a ragged affair, with Ireton overcoming 23 turnovers to outlast the Lions (3-24, 1-17) who have played their best basketball of the season with hall of famer, George Leftwich returning to the bench as coach of the Washington, DC school.

Ireton broke out to a 7-2 lead, only to see Carroll battle back to tie the game at 9-9 and take a 12-11 lead after one period. The Cardinals pushed out to a six point margin, but the Lions, who converted 11 three pointers, always answered and trailed 28-26 at the intermission.  Ireton’s Louie Khouri, Patrick Moseh, and Dan Noe pushed the Cardinals out to a 35-29 advantage early in the third period only to see the Lion’s Justin Milstead respond with back-to-back threes and suddenly it was dead even. Jahmai George followed with consecutive three’s of his own and Carroll stayed stride for stride with the home team. Carroll regained the lead, and held their final advantage at 45-44 late in the third period.  Khouri scored the period’s final 5 points to send Ireton into the 4th quarter with a 50-47lead.

The Cardinals opened the 4th with an 13-4 run to gain a 63-51 lead and for a moment it looked like Ireton had finally garnered some space.  Enter Milstead. The Lion got the hot hand again and led Carroll on a 10-2 run of its own and suddenly it was a 65-61 game.  The game, unusual with a pair of earlier technical fouls on the visitors, saw a third tech on the Lions and the sanction appeared to be a emotionally draining development. With Ireton converting free throws and gaining possession, the advantage on the scoreboard swelled and Carroll never threatened the remainder of the contest.

Louie Khouri led all scorers with 25 points, Dan Noe had 17, Moseh added 16.  Da’von Wiley had 7, Taylor McHugh 6, and Ty Quarles 2.  Carroll was led by Jahmai George with 14, Justin Milstead 13, Frederick Rowles 12, Mauri Winfree had 11. Maurice Lewis added 9 for the green and gold Lions. The teams combined for a 45-39 second half of high scoring following error-plagued first half.

The win sends Ireton to Gallaudet University Saturday for a 2:45 tipoff with top-seeded Gonzaga.  The Eagles topped Ireton 67-61 recently in Alexandria enroute to their 18-0 blitz through the WCAC regular season.   The game is the second of four Saturday, DeMatha-St Johns opens the afternoon, with Good Counsel-O’Connell and PVI-McNamara to follow.  Admission for the quarter finals is $5/person, no passes or season tickets are valid for the Conference’s playoffs

Second Quarter Sinks Cards in WCAC first round, 52-36

Sophomore Cecilia Leone (23) scored 7 in the WCAC tourney action at Bishop O'Connell.

Shorthanded against diocesan rival, Bishop O’Connell, in the first round of the WCAC playoffs, Bishop Ireton hung tough through one quarter before the Knights ouscored the visitors 17-7 in the second to cruise to their third win over Ireton in the 2012-13 season, sidelining the redbirds from the playoffs Thursday night in Arlington. It was the second meeting of the teams in less than a week and this time there was little doubt after a 5-point decision in Alexandria the previous Friday.

Trailing only 10-8 after one period, the Cardinals without senior post player, Julia O’Brien, had trouble with the inside game and O’Connell took advantage of opportunity to go into the locker room with a 25-17 lead.  The Knights would add 8 more to the lead during the third quarter took push the margin to 37-23.  Ireton had their best quarter in the game’s final period, scoring 13 in the fourth after scoring only 13 in the second and third combined.

Ten Knights got their names in the scorebook with Tori Morris and Ireton’s Mara Celis-Copelotti each scoring 10 points.  DJO’s Janiya Clemmons, Gillian Gerton, and the Cardinals’ sophomore Alex Stipano scored 8, and Camille Weber and Cece Leone added 7 for Ireton.

The win sends O’Connell (9-17, 4-14) to the tournament’s quarterfinal date with top seeded St Johns’ while Ireton will await the final VISAA poll to see if and where the Cardinals (10-18, 2-16) could play in the state division I girls’ playoffs. Currently, the Knights were the 9th seed, Ireton the 10th seed.

Alexandria Sportsman’s Club honors NVSHL all-star Nick Tangora

Two-time NVSHL all star, 4-time academic all star Nick Tangora receives athlete of the month award from ASC president, Jeff Murphy (r). Ireton athletic director Bill Simmons (l) joined Tangora at the ceremony.

Senior Nick Tangora, a two-time Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League all-star perfomer, was honored Tuesday by the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club on the eve of Tangora’s second consecutive appearance in the League’s all star gala Wednesday, February 20th at the Ice House Arena in Ashburn, Virginia.

The Club recognized Tangora as their athlete of the month for February.  The lanky senior center iceman was the captain of the 2012-13 squad and led Ireton in goals scored and assists in his final campaign as a Cardinal. The club noted that the Fairfax Station native was not only a two-time all star player, but also a 4-time academic all star in the NVSHL.

Athletic director Bill Simmons, standing in for head coach  Anthony DiCarlo, praised Tangora as ” a gentleman, a model of the scholar-athlete the Cardinals aspire to develop at Bishop Ireton.”  Club president Jeff Murphy presented the award to Tangora, who thanked the Club, his family, coaches, and teammates. “I have played with great teammates, who made it possible for me to be recognized tonight,” said Tangora. “And, of course, my parents, who took me all over to practice and play hockey for all these years. I really appreciate their support.”

While Tangora was non commital about his hockey future in college, he now turns his attention to Coach Mike Gallagher’s baseball team, where the Cardinals will count on the versatile senior for another strong arm on the mound and big bat in the lineup as Ireton prepares for the 2013 baseball season.

Indoor Track ends most successful campaign ever with VISAA appearance

The 2013 Indoor track and field season ended at the VISAA Indoor Championships held at St. Christopher School in Richmond, VA.  This was the most successful year in school history with school records falling, personal records set for most of the athletes, and a large number of fun memories.  At the VISAA alone, Bishop Ireton athletes earned 3 new school records and 10 personal records (PRs).

At the dinner after the VISAA meet, Coaches Williams and EveLyn shared with the athletes how proud they were of the team spirit and commitment the athletes showed all season, showing up during winter break in the cold and light rain and snow, giving up their Sundays to go train in the pool, and asking the coaches to add extra practices if they missed a day due to school closings.  This commitment showed in the number of personal and school records in almost every event.  To date this was the largest continuous number of student-athletes to participate in the program in school history and when you factor that the majority of students are underclassmen, the future looks bright.

The following represent the athletes with the 11 new school  indoor records:

Ireton falls just short on Senior Night, 49-44

Ireton's 4 seniors, left to right, Camille Weber, Mara Celis-Copelotti, Taylor Gallahan, and Julia O'Brien

As four Cardinal seniors received accolades for their four varsity seasons with girls basketball, their thoughts turned to the impending contest with Bishop O’Connell.  A year ago, the Cardinals snapped a long streak of losses in the WCAC with a thrilling senior night win over the Arlington visitors.  Falling just short earlier this year in the season’s first matchup, the seniors looked to even the series on their final regular season game in Godley Gym.  In a hard-fought 49-44 setback, the girls fell just short but not for lack of effort as they gamely pulled within a point late in the contest.

Bishop O’Connell took an early 13-6 lead in the first quarter, only to see the Cardinals bounce back with an 18-13 second quarter to 26-24 at intermission.  The home team, a long range shooting bunch, couldn’t get but one 3-pointer to fall in the game, and their offensive struggles hurt them down the stretch as they fought to grab a lead. They did cobble together an run in the fourth quarter to close a 38-30 third quarter deficit to 39-38 with 6 minutes remaining in the game.

It was a missed layup that would have given Ireton the lead that may have turned the tide for O’Connell as the Knights survived the Ireton rally and pulled away for their 4th conference win of the year.  Tori Morris of DJO led all scorers with 15 points, senior Julia O’Brien led Ireton with 13, Isabelle Kendall had 9.  Senior Camille Weber had 7, Mara Celis-Copelotti 6, along with Cece Leon.

The Cardinals ended their regular season 10-17, 2-16 in the WCAC and a number 9 seed in the conference playoffs. As luck would have it, the seed sends the redbirds back to Arlington and a 7pm tipoff with the Knights, the number 8 seed, on Thursday, February 21st.   Winner advances to Gonzaga and a matchup with top-seeded St Johns on Saturday.
