Swimmers rack up 5 dual wins in weekend action

Coach John Gullickson’s swimmers either outswim the opponent’s fastest swimmers or overwhelm the team with depth in scoring in each event to continue an impressive winning steak with more dual wins by both the boys and girls teams.

On Friday, the Cardinals used their depth as well as strong event times to overwhelm diocesan rival PVI at Marymount University. The boys’ scored a 108-58 win while the girls topped the Panthers 97-65.

For the boys, Kevin Grant, Ben Gorski won two individual events while Emi Quinn, Kelly Palmer, Clara Boggs, Anna Fracasso, and Hayley Snell each logged a win for the Cardinals.

Ireton’s boys wom two of three relays, the 200 medley and took first and second in the 200 free. Kevin Grant, Carl Smearman, Scott Schwartz, and AJ Salvatori swam the winning 200 freestyle relay while Thomas Reichelt, Matt Fracasso, Kevin Abbed, and Sam Price snared a second. In the lone relay the Panthers captured, the 400 freestyle, the Alexandrian’s mitigated the damage by finishing second, third, and fourth. Salvatori, Gorski,Smearman, and Kevin Grant also won the 200 medley relay.

Ireton’s girls captured a win in the 200 freestyle with Emi Quinn, Clara Boggs, Catherine Kennedy, and Hayley Snell posting a 1:49.28 winning time. Ireton also added a third and fourth in the event. PVI took the other relays, but again, the depth of the girls’ team was evident as they garnered a second and third in both 400 Free and 200 medley relays.

The Cardinals followed the Friday win with five more girls wins and three more for the boys on Saturday when the travelled to Fredericksburg to square off with down state opponents. The Alexadnria school swept the day of swimming with wins on both boys and girls.
