The Cardinals end the 2-year rein of Bishop O'Connell, winning the girls' NoVa Catholic meet in its third year.

Senior Kelly Palmer anchored the final girls relay and held off an O’Connell challenge to give the Cardinals a 265-259 win over the second-place Knights in the 8-team Northern Virginia Catholic Regional swim championships at George Mason University’s Freedom Center in Manassas on Saturday.  The Knights easily outpointed second place Bishop Ireton in the boys meet 372-265 to win the 7-team boys meet.

It was a great day for both squads as both boys and girls continued to qualify swimmers in both individual and relays for state and Catholic National meets. Both teams scored well in the three relay events and both piled up points in the grueling 500 yard freestyle race, the boys a whopping 38 team points, the girls 30!

Sophomore Ben Gorski won the 500 free event in 5:04.15 while senior Emi Quinn captured the 100 free in a time of :57.29.  The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Quinn, junior Catherine Kennedy, freshman Clara Boggs, and Palmer captured a first place for the champions.

The boys scored points in every event as did the girls enroute to their win. It was the 500 however, where the depth of the teams came to the fore in a major way.  In addition to Gorski’s win, Michael Morrison finished 4th (5:54.34), Sam Price was 6th (6:13.46) and Carlos Chiriboga was 9th (6:37.87)  The girls were led by Palmer’s second in 5:41.03, Boggs was 6th, Julianna Sampaio 8th, and Kaitlin Nguyen 10th.

Ireton divers were busy as well, sophomores Michael Curry, Stephanie Frazier, and Emma Peterson finished 4th, 3rd, and 6th respectively in the one meter diving event.
