Bishop Ireton broke open a 32-31game in the second half to race away to a 68-37 win in their WCAC home opener. The win improved the Cardinals to 10-3 on the season, 2-2 in conference play.
The first half was a seesaw affair, Ireton grab a lead, the Falcons expertly carve up the Cardinal zone and push back in front. Good Counsel’s Byron Hawkins was nearly unstoppable in the first half, scoring 20 of his game-high 23 points before intermission.
The third quarter continued the back and forth game, each team answering the other until Hawkins missed a three-point attempt with the Falcons holding a narrow 43-42 advantage. Senior Davon Wiley countered with a jumper on the other end and the Cardinals regained a lead they would not relinquish in opening a 50-45 lead into the game’s final quarter. The Cardinals dropped an 13-0 burst on the visitors and suddenly Ireton had a 68-51 and control of the game. The run included 3 of 7 three-point baskets Ireton would score on the night.
Good Counsel fell to 5-8, 0-4 in the WCAC while the Cardinals evened their conference mark heading into Friday’s matchup with St Mary’s Ryken in Leonardtown. Senior Louie Khouri led Ireton in scoring with 20, Wiley added 18 in his highest output of the season, and Patrick Moseh had 11. Taylor McHugh was the 4th Cardinal in double figures with 10, Win Miller added 6, Ty Quarles 5, and Richie Kamtchoum had 2 in his first career start for the Bishop Ireton. Andrew Calomeris had 16 for Good Counsel in addition to Hawkins’ 23.
