#4 Paul VI holds off Cardinals, 60-52

Junior Ty Quarles (13) and senior Da'von Wiley led Ireton with 13 points in the loss to PVI Sunday.

When Bishop Ireton (12-8, 3-7) led the heavily favored Paul VI (15-5, 7-3) for more than three quarters of their first meeting in Fairfax, some observers thought the home team may have overlooked the Cardinals before pulling out a win to open the WCAC campaign in December.  The Cardinals knew better and, with a three-point bucket early in the 4th quarter by Wynn Miller, the Panthers were again in a fight, leading only 46-45.   But give the visiting Panthers credit, they made plays down the stretch and held on to a 60-52 win in Godley Gym Sunday.

“We played well.  They are a very good basketball team.” said Ireton’s head coach, Neil Berkman. “We were right there, down one in the middle of the 4th quarter.  I can’t fault the effort from our guys.”

Paul VI broke on top early and junior Patrick Moseh carried the Cardinals out of the gate, scoring the team’s first 5 points to keep Ireton close. Ty Quarles made a pair of free throws and the Cardinals grabbed a 7-6 lead early.  The lead see-sawed briefly before the Panthers ended the first quarter on an 8-2 run for a 17-11 advantage.

The second quarter saw the Panthers open an 11-point lead when Marcus Derrickson grabbed an offensive rebound and gave PVI a 29-18 bulge.   Junior Ty Quarles, who scored 13 on the day, led the Ireton counterattack with a jumper then drained a pair of free throws. Pat Moseh added a deuce and suddenly the redbirds had closed the deficit to 29-24.  But Derrickson would again plague the home team as he calmly tossed in a three-ball as time expired in the first half, sending the Panthers to the dressing room up 32-24.

Juniors Dan Noe and Quarles opened the second half with baskets, senior Da’von Wiley hit a jumper, and the lead melted to 34-30.  The teams continued their struggle through the third period, PVI entering the game’s final stanza with a six point lead at 43-37.

Quarles again took the spotlight, dropping a crowd-pleasing three to pull Ireton to 43-40, then, following a Tyler Scanlon free throw, Noe answered with a jumper and Ireton drew within 44-42.  Evan Taylor responded with a bucket before Wynn Miller countered with a three from the corner and Ireton trailed 46-45 with five and half minutes remaining.  PVI’s Glen Farello called a time out and the Panthers regrouped.  The visitors scored, the Cardinals, with a pair of Wiley free throws, responded. The teams traded baskets until Franklin Howard’s three gave the Fairfax school some breathing room at 53-49.

Moseh again closed the gap with a pair on the charity stripe, then the teams went into a cold streak, ended with another PVI three, followed by a free throws from Jamall Robinson, and suddenly the clock was racing away the margin had grown suddenly to 58-51. Free throws, one by Ireton’s Moseh, two by Kevin Dorsey marked the game’s final tallies and the Panthers would improve to 7-3 in the WCAC while the Cardinals dropped their 5th straight after a 3-2 start in conference play.

Derrickson’s 16 points for the Panthers led all scorers, Howard added 12, Dorsey 9 for the victors. Quarles and Wiley scored 13 each to lead Ireton, Moseh had 9, Louie Khouri 7 as did Noe, and Miller’s three rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals. The home team was deadly from the charity line, converting 14 of 16 free throws, but the visitors hit also shot well at 11 of 14. While Ireton held a 4-3 advantage in three-point goals, the 6 more field goals overall was the difference in the game offensively.

St John’s visits Godley Gym Tuesday for the second game of the conference schedule. Ireton visited Gallagher Gym ranked #14 in the Washington Post for the first meeting of the year and the Cadets stormed the court when the Chevy Chase school upended the Cardinals 61-56.  The tripleheader starts with freshmen at 4pm, JV at 5:45, and the scheduled varsity tipoff is slated for 7:30.

Campbell University Adds Justin Holmes to Elite PGA Program

Senior Justin Holmes of the Cardinals' 2013 golf team will join Campbell University's PGA golf program this fall.

Senior Justin Holmes of Cheltonham, Maryland, has accepted admission to Campbell University’s prestigious PGA Golf Management Program for the fall 2013 session.  Admission to the program, according to Campbell, is granted through a competitive process to the most qualified applicants based on the quality of the SAT/ACT scores, grade point averages, golf proficiency, recommendations, and an interview.

The North Carolina school limits enrollment in their four and a half year program to 50.  In addition to a full academic schedule, the program places their students in a competitive tournament each weekend.

The Campbell course is 1 of only 19 PGA-sanctioned golf schools in the country. These PGA Golf Management students are given unlimited access to the Keith Hills Golf Club, a 27-hole facility owned by University and managed by the PGA Golf Management Program. Campbell is also the only PGA Golf Management Program that jointly offers a Bachelor of Business Adminstration degree (BBA) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree as part of their 3/2 program. This program allows students to apply for admission to the Graduate Program in Business at the end of their junior year and earn both a BBA and MBA in just five years.

By reputation the School’s golf curriculum is rigorous.  In addition to the extensive classroom studies and competitive tournaments every weekend, Holmes will also have an opportunity to qualify to play in the annual Jones Cup and Carolinas’ Cup.  To complete the full program, all PGAGM students must complete 16+ months of internships at accredited PGA facilities and pass the Playing Ability Test (PAT).  Graduates are immediately eligible for membership in the PGA of America.

Coach Pete Davey was enthusiastic about Justin’s decision. “He’s the first player from our program to attend a PGA program like this. In his three years with our team I have never coached a player that has made as much progress as Justin. I think he’s going excel as a pro.”

Justin is a three year member of the Bishop Ireton golf team, sporting a 9 handicap.  He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Mark Holmes.

Cardinal snag 3 titles, 4th place in Holloway Invitational Wrestling Tourney, head for NoVA Regional 32-team affair

Senior Jimmy Keegan (right) has added a Holloway Tournament title and a 4th in the NoVA Regional tourney to his resume in this young wrestling season.

Bishop Ireton’s wrestlers opened the 2012-13 campaign at St James School for the Holloway Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.  An 8-team field, Ireton garnered a 4th place while the WCAC’s St Johns won the team title. Host St James was second, Landon third.

They saw Conor Reilly win a championship at 106, Nick Womack at 138, and senioir Jimmy Keegan claimed the title at 285.  The Cardinals also had 4th place finishes from Jeff Severini and

The mega-tourney at Fairfax High School  last Saturday saw 32 public and private schools from across the northern Virginia region gather for the annual battle. Last year’s Cardinals were the highest finishing team with a 9th place finish, but the Ireton squad couldn’t replicate that finish this year.  Jimmy Keegan led the Alexandria school with a 4th place finish and fellow senior Nick Womack was able to land an  8th place finish that kept the team one place better than diocesan rival, Bishop O’Connell in the overall standings.

Rower Catherine Babiec to be a Princeton Tiger

Cardinal rower, Catherine Babiec, (second from right) competed for the US in rowing on the Wannsee River outside Berlin, Germany. She was one of three Cardinals rowing at the highest levels in the summer.

Senior Catherine Babiec, the third Babiec to row for Bishop Ireton, will follow her brother and sister into collegiate rowing next fall when she enrolls at Princeton to row for crew Head Coach Lori Dauphiny, the Tigers announced this week.

Babiec follows brother Thaddyeus, who rows for Boston University, and sister, Olivia who competes for Drexel in Philadelphia.  With the strong blood lines, even her father rowed competitively, it was easy to see why she drew such interest.

She rowed for the Junior National Team High Performance boat in Germany last summer, she has rowed for the past 3 years at Bishop Ireton on the varsity 8+ as well as stroking the Ireton varsity 8+ in the just completed fall season.  She is tied for second fastest 2km in Cardinals team history and was selected as an all Met honorable mention by the Washington Post following her junior spring campaign.

An Ivy League school, Princeton does not offer athletic scholarships so no National Letter of Intent (NLI) is involved, but the New Jersey school offered Babiec admission and the Ireton senior quickly accepted the offer.

” I visited a number of schools, including Stanford and Washington State, but when I came home from Princeton I knew that was the best place for me.” said Catherine of her fall visit. “I had the chance to see a number of great schools with beautiful campuses, but I liked the team, the coaches, and the Princeton campus. I also like that it is a strong program, they have qualified for the NCAA championships every year that they have been held. I want to be a member of the first national championship team at Princeton. ”

Coach Dauphiny suggests they are enthusiastic about the decision as well.  “We are honored and excited Catherine Babiec will be attending Princeton and will be rowing on our team! We believe strongly that she will make a positive and lasting impact as a member of our team at Princeton. We are impressed with all she has achieved at the high school level . She is an outstanding student athlete who has worked very hard for the opportunity to take her studies and her rowing to the next level. Catherine has tremendous potential and we can’t wait to work with her.  We couldn’t be happier to have Catherine at Princeton. She will be one of our top student athletes and will be part of a solid team/class.”

“This is more exciting news for our crew and our School. We are very proud of Catherine and all her teammates.” commented athletic director Bill Simmons. “Coach Eric Gehrke and his staff of coaches are doing a great job, the kids work so hard, and their families are so supportive.  Certainly the Babiecs have been a great part of developing our rowing program, I can’t remember when we didn’t have a Babiec in our best boat.  I guess we will have to get ready for that after this spring.”

Catherine joins teammates Lindsey Martini  (UVa) and Allison Lee (Boston U) heading to college to row with top tier programs. She is the daughter of Doctor and Mrs. Dan Babiec of Alexandria, Virginia.  More commitments may be on the way suggests Coach Gehrke.

O’Connell struggles past Cardinals, 36-29

Senior Julia O'Brien has been among the Cardinals top rebounders this winter.

When the “easy things” like layups and free throws get extremely hard, everything else seems to get even harder.  The Cardinals lived that experience Sunday in Arlington as they fell to rival Bishop O’Connell 36-29.

The visiting Cardinals fell behind 9-4 in the opening stanza of the contest but turned the tables on the host Knights holding the home team to only two points in the game’s second quarter to edge in front 13-11 at intermission.

O’Connell regrouped coming out of the locker room in the third quarter and scored 17 points in the third to open up a 28-19 lead heading to the final period.   Ireton would shave two points off the margin in the fourth quarter, but it was much too little to stop the Knights from collecting their second conference win of the year.

“We missed so many layups.” lamented Ireton’s assistant coach, Rudy Burton.  “And, 11 for 28 from the free throw line will make it hard for anyone to win.”  The Cardinals had but 8 field goals for the day, two of them of the three point variety.   Bishop O’Connell had similar struggles, making but 10 of 22 at the “charity stripe” and only 12 field goals.

Mara Celis-Copelotti had a game high 12 points, the only player on either team to reach double figures. Alex Stipano added 6, Camille Weber 5, for Ireton while  junior Isabelle Kendall and senior Julia O’Brien each contributed 3.  Bishop O’Connell was led Gillian Gerten’s 9 points.

The Cardinals postponed contest with Fredericksburg Christian School will not be rescheduled it was announced on Monday.

Cards get a “Wynn” in Overtime at Flint Hill, 70-56

Junior Wynn Miller has become one of the Cardinals leading three-point threats this season.

Bishop Ireton’s Wynn Miller scored his 10 points during the second half to twice widen a razor close contest and the Cardinals went on to a 70-56 overtime win at Flint Hill (3-8) Saturday afternoon in Oakton. The victory sent Ireton to its 12th win  and it second in as many days on the road. Friday night the club outlasted St Mary’s Ryken in Leonardtown.

The Cardinals perhaps showed some fatigue early in the game and neither squad scored in the opening two minutes.  The teams exchanged leads and Ireton emerged with a 11-9 advantage after one quarter. Ireton went on a 8-2 run to open the second period, then both clubs went “cold” from the field, with the visitors scoring from the free throw line primarily in building a 30-17 halftime lead. For the day, Ireton benefited from 35 free throw opportunities, making 26. The home team conversely would go only 6 for 12 from “the line”.

Flint Hill came out of the locker room and outscored the Cardinals 19-9 during the third quarter and drew the crowd back into the contest as the teams opened the final period of play with the visitors holding on 39-36.  A Matt Kennedy three-pointer, his only one of the day, drew the Huskies even at 43 for the first time since the first quarter.

Wynn Miller began his heroics with a 3-point hoop, then immediately followed on the next possession with a jumper, junior Dan Noe hit another and it began to look like the Cardinals would regain control at 52-45. But Flint Hill countered with a 7-0 run of their own and the game was again knotted at 52.  Patrick Moseh gave Ireton a 54-52 lead, but the Huskies rallied.  Both teams had opportunities in the final seconds of the contest, but neither could convert and the game headed to overtime tied at 54.

The overtime, however, was all Cardinals. Senior Da’von Wiley opened the extra session with a jumper and the Cardinals then blanketed the home team with a smothering defense. Off a miss the Cardinals converted again, then sent Wynn Miller to the line where he made both ends of a 1-and-1. After a made free throw, one of only two points the Huskies would score in the overtime, Miller drained a critical three from deep in the corner and Ireton had a 63-55 bulge as time began to get away from the upset-minded hosts. Taylor McHugh hit a jumper, then converted one of two free throws, Moseh made a layup, followed with a free throw and the Huskies couldn’t get a shot to fall or a rebound to bounce  as the game raced into the Ireton corner for a 14-point margin of victory.

It was a balanced scoresheet for the Alexandria school with five Cardinals scoring in double figures: McHugh and Moseh with 13, Noe had 11, Miller and Khyree Robinson both with 10.  Ty Quarles had 7 and Wiley 6 for Ireton. The Huskies Britton Anderson had a game-high 16 points while Damien Jones was the only other Husky in double figures with 10.

Bishop Ireton improved to 12-3, 3-2 in conference play without the services Saturday of team captain, Louie Khouri. The guard, wearing a protective boot, was relegated to “cheerleader” on the Ireton sideline.  Next up for the road weary redbirds is a date with powerhouse, DeMatha in Hyattsville on Tuesday. They will return home Friday to host Bishop McNamara in Godley Gym.

Ryken sweeps by Cardinals, 64-25

Junior Isabel Kendal has developed into a starter for the Cardinals

Bishop Ireton was simply no match for the senior-laden Knights of St Mary’s Ryken Friday in a 64-25 rout of the Cardinals in Godley Gym.  The Cardinals held their only lead at 2-0 before the visitors reeled off 11 straight points and the tone for the night was set.

After one period the Leonardtown, Maryland school held a 17-5 advantage and the Knights opened the second period with another big run, this time a 10-0 spurt to gain a 20-point lead.  The Cardinals rallied with their own 6-2 counterattack, but entered halftime on the short end of a 29-11 count.

The third period was more of the same as the outmanned home team saw another Ryken streak, this time a 21-2 burst blow the margin to 50-13, and the period would end with the navy blue-clad Ryken owning a 55-16 lead.  The fourth quarter saw both teams substituting liberally and the play evened out with both clubs scoring nine each in a game long before decided.  Mara Celis-Copelotti led the Cardinals with 5, Julia O’Brien and Camille Weber had 4 each on a long night for the offense of the home team.

For the Cardinals, they fall to 8-7 on the season, 0-6 in conference play. Elizabeth Seton visits Godley Gym Tuesday in a tripleheader, freshmen at 4, JV at 5:45, and varsity tipoff slated for 7:30.

Cardinals Drop a Pair of WCAC Contests

Junior Point guard Taylor McHugh directs the Cardinal attack.

In one game Coach Neil Berkman’s squad led nearly the entire contest, in the other they chased the visitors the entire game, but both ended up in WCAC setbacks over the weeekend in boys basketball.  On Friday, Bishop McNamara scored the game’s final 5 points to ****** a 62-58 win and Sunday, Bishop O’Connell used a big second quarter to run away to a 74-58 victory in Godley Gym.

On Friday, the Mustangs and Cardinals played a fast-paced first period, with Ireton grabbing a 20-15 lead. Behind Wynn Miller and Patrick Moseh, who scored 11 of the Cardinals 17 second quarter points, the home team built a 12-point advantage at 37-25 into the locker room at intermission.  The Mustangs rebounded in the third quarter to shave the lead to 46-39 going into the game’s final period.  There the visitors stole  the game away, limiting the suddenly cold shooting  hosts to one shot and converting free throws. Slowly the Ireton lead shrank until a three-pointer gave McNamara its first lead since 2-0 at 55-54.

Ireton’s last gasp was a pair of Da’von Wiley free throws in the game’s final minute to give Ireton their final advantage at 58-57.  The final five points went to the visitors and a stunned home faithful filed out of Godley Gym and into the night.  Patrick Moseh had a game-high 24 points, but no other Cardinal reached double figures. Dan Noe and Da’von Wiley scored 8 each, Miller added 7. Stephan Jiggetts led Bishop McNamara with 18, Sam Greene had 14, and Kevin Robbins 9.

Sunday’s contest with arguably the WCAC’s toughest team at this point in the season, Bishop O’Connell, looked to be a tall order.  The Knights, fresh off a 20-point pasting of DeMatha, had the confidence of a WCAC-leading bunch. The contest started slowly with neither team scoring in their opening few possessions, then the visitors grabbed  a quick 4-0 lead. Patrick Moseh and Da’von Wiley promptly tied the game at 4-4, and the teams stood toe-to-toe for the remainder of an exciting fast paced period, capped Dan Noe’s 30 foot three at the buzzer to pull Ireton to within 16-13 after one period.

A traditional three-point play pulled the Cardinals even at 16-16 in the start of the second period, but O’Connell’s Leroy Butts soon provided the blue jerseyed visitors a 26-20 lead, and a Romelo Trimble’s five points pushed the Cardinals into 32-20 hole. The Knights moved to the locker room with a comfortable 34-21 advantage.

O’Connell would continue to attack the Cardinals, outscoring them 24-13 in the third quarter to open up a 58-34 margin.  The final quarter saw both teams substitute liberally, the Knights would end the game with nine different players scoring, and Ireton would trim the lead by outscoring the visitors 24-16, long after the contest was in doubt for the final margin.  Once again, Moseh would lead all scorers with 21 points but no other redbird would score more than 9.  Butts led the Knights with 18, Romelo Trimble had 13, Junior Etou 12. The three combined for 29 of O’Connell’s 57 rebounds in the contest.

Coming off the weekend, Ireton falls to 12-6, 3-5 in the WCAC, while O’Connell improved to 15-1, a perfect 8-0 mark in WCAC play.  A long layoff awaits the Cardinals, there next action is at Gonzaga on Tuesday, January 22d.
