Once again Coach Neil Berkman’s Cardinals followed what appears to be a familiar script, come out hard and fast, punch the opponent in the nose right from the tipoff. From a 12-point half time lead over nationally ranked Paul VI to a 20-0 start with St Andrews, a fast start has become the calling card for this season’s squad.
They followed that pattern in breaking out to a 16-9 first quarter lead over Louisana’s #5 ranked Brother Martin (17-1) of New Orleans. They would nurse a 5-point advantage into intermission at 31-26. The Crusaders came out on fire in the third quarter to storm to a 9-point lead heading to the game’s final period. They would extend the lead to 11 with just under 2:30 to play and the Cardinals could draw no closer 7 with 17 seconds remaining.
Junior Patrick Moseh had a team-high 21 points for Bishop Ireton, Dan Noe added 16. Taylor McHugh and Davon Wiley each chipped in 6, Louie Khouri had 5 and Wyn Miller and Ty Quarles each had 3.
For the Cardinals, they wrap up their Atlanta visit with a 3pm date with tourney host, the Golden Lions of St Pius X (9-3) on Saturday. They return to Alexandria Sunday and will return to WCAC action on the final day of Christmas break, Wednesday when the Falcons of Good Counsel (5-7) visit Godley Gym. Varsity tipoff is 6pm.
