St Pius X Christmas Tournament ends for Ireton with win, 56-49

Bishop Ireton improved to 9-3 on the year with a hard fought 56-49 boys basketball win over host St Pius X Saturday in the final game of the 3-day tourney in Atlanta.

The game had an uneven start, with the Cardinals building a 9-2 lead early, the Golden Lions clawing back to 9-6 at the end of one period.   Ireton picked up the pace in the second, putting 16 points on the board to take a 25-16 advantage at the intermission.

St Pius X scored the first 5 points of the second half to close the deficit to four at 25-21 and the quarter seesawed back and forth before the Cardinals would close out the period leading 38-31.  With 5:46 left in the game, Ireton grabbed its largest lead at 43-34, but again the Golden Lions rebounded with a 7-2 run to close the lead to 45-41.

The Cardinals responded with six unanswered points to build the lead to 10 at 51-41 with only 1:29 to play.  The teams swapped baskets, but the Cardinals coasted to the 7 point final.

Coach Neil Berkman’s team had an impressive run. The three opponents facing the ball club came into their games with Ireton sporting a combined win/loss record of 36-5, including Brother Martin’s 16-1 mark. For the Alexandria school to go 2-1 for the road trip portends good things could be ahead for these Cardinals and their fans.

Good Counsel visits Godley Gym on the final day of the Christmas break for the road-weary boys. A 2:30 freshmen game tips off a tripleheader of hoops, the varsity contest is slated for a 6pm start.  The Cardinals faced the Falcons 4 times last season, winning the first three before being upended in their final meeting, a WCAC playoff quarterfinal berth at stake that evening.

Cardinal Wrestlers Edge Marshall for Saints Holiday title, 127-126!

2012 Cardinal wrestling team captures tourney title at St Stephens Dec 29th

Coaches know that every victory is a combination of many little things as much as any one big moment. There were many little moments, from 4th seeded Michael Kelly advancing to the finals and unseeded Luis Hidalgo grabbing a 4th place setting up Jimmy Keegan securing the all important final point in his third place match. The burly 285 pounder’s first period pin in the consolation finals sent the Cardinals to their second Saints Holiday Classic title in three years in Goodwin Gym.

Chris Macey earned a third place at 132 for Bishop Ireton. He pinned Will Coward of St Stephens in 1:59 before he was pinned in the next round by Lenny Merkin of Brooklyn, New York’s Poly Prep.  Macey bounced back in the consolation rounds to deck Adrian Alapide of Bishop O’Connell in :39 and then stopped Joey Betts in :36 for the third place.

Seniors Nick Womack (138) and Jeff Severini (145) snared key championships in back-to-back matches. Womack, a top seed, won his first match by technical fall, 17-0 over Tommy McAteer of O’Connell then manhandled Zachary Chastain of Park View 17-1 in the title match.   Severini decked Brandon Juarez of Marshall in :48, stuck JPG Wolf Douglas Roder in 2:36, then pinned freshmen teammate Joe Siedlerz in the championship bout.  Siedlerz had a strong tournament, wrestling in a non scoring slot at 145.  He pinned Ryan Patridge of Madison in his first match, received an injury forfeit and suddenly found himself in the finals against fellow Cardinal Severini.

At 152 Ireton’s Tommy Kelly ousted Daniel Maranda of Park View with an 8-0 decision then pinned Paul Roder of John Paul the Great in 2:25. Matt Baum decisioned the Cardinal in the championship 9-1 but it was a strong day for the senior grappler, one of those key contributors to the razor thin team win.

Luis Hidalgo likewise had his strongest tournament of the season with a 4th place finish.  After an opening round setback, he scored a big 12-1 thrashing of Will Aubrey of O’Connell before Sean Mastrolembo of Dominion High School edged Hidalgo 9-8 for third place.

Freshman Trey Lovisone continued to have an impressive first season for the redbirds at 195. He stopped Stephen Tapia of George Marshall in 2:40, then decisioned Marcus Pearson of Madison 13-0 to win the championship.

Jimmy Keegan, upset in the first round by Denzel Munroe of Poly Prep 2-1 bounced back in the consolation round to record three falls, the final one the all important 127th team point of the tournament. Daniel Boyce of Park View was flatted in :48, O’Connell’s Reily Paul was decked in :33, then Adeeb Atariwa of Dominion was pancaked in 1:30 to earn Keegan the third place finish.

Coach Don Dight was thrilled with the outcome. “We are a young team, quite a bit less experienced than last year’s bunch.  But the guys wrestled hard, we learned a lot and I think will take a great deal of confidence from this win.” The Cardinals entered only 11 scoring wrestlers in the 14-class tourney, making the win all the more impressive for the squad.

36th Annual Saints Holiday Classic Team Results:

1) Bishop Ireton          127

2) George Marshall    126

3) James Madison      118

4) Poly Prep (NY)       103

5) Dominion                 94

6) Bishop O’Connell  92.5

7) Park View                 82

8) John Paul the Great 64

9) St Stephens/St Agnes 49

(Clark County and Central High School withdrew due to weather)

New Orlean’s Brother Martin overcomes Cardinals 69-60 in Atlanta’s SPX Christmas Classic

Senior Louie Khouri has emerged as a three point threat for the 2012-13 Cardinals at the SPX Christmas Classic in Atlanta

Once again Coach Neil Berkman’s Cardinals followed what appears to be a familiar script, come out hard and fast, punch the opponent in the nose right from the tipoff.  From a 12-point half time lead over nationally ranked Paul VI to a 20-0 start with St Andrews, a fast start has become the calling card for this season’s squad.

They followed that pattern in breaking out to a 16-9 first quarter lead over Louisana’s #5 ranked Brother Martin (17-1) of New Orleans.  They would nurse a 5-point advantage into intermission at 31-26.  The Crusaders came out on fire in the third quarter to storm to a 9-point lead heading to the game’s final period.  They would extend the lead to 11 with just under 2:30 to play and the Cardinals could draw no closer 7 with 17 seconds remaining.

Junior Patrick Moseh had a team-high 21 points for Bishop Ireton, Dan Noe added 16.  Taylor McHugh and Davon Wiley each chipped in 6, Louie Khouri had 5 and Wyn Miller and Ty Quarles each had 3.

For the Cardinals, they wrap up their Atlanta visit with a 3pm date with tourney host, the Golden Lions of St Pius X (9-3) on Saturday. They return to Alexandria Sunday and will return to WCAC action on the final day of Christmas break, Wednesday when the Falcons of Good Counsel (5-7) visit Godley Gym. Varsity tipoff is 6pm.

Ireton claims Joe Cascio tourney title, 46-43

Cardinals mug with their second tourney championship of the season, this one at the Joe Cascio Classic in Falls Church

It wasn’t always pretty, and it certainly wasn’t easy, but Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals (8-5) claimed their second tournament championship of the season in a 46-43 win over neighboring West Potomac High School at Falls Church High School Friday afternoon.

The Wolverines (5-6) battled the Cardinals throughout the tightly contested affair, each time the Catholic school put distance between the clubs, the blue jerseyed public school climbed right back with a run of their own.  Ireton staked themselves to an 11-8 advantage after one period, then went on a 13-4 tear to go to halftime with a comfortable 26-18 lead.  West Potomac came out in the third period, however, and promptly put together their own 11-4 run to get right back into the game. The third period ended with Ireton clinging to a slim two point margin at 35-33.

Mara Celis-Copelotti opened the final stanza with a three point bucket and sophomore Alex Stipano quickly drained a jumper off a Wolverine turnover and suddenly Ireton raced out to a 40-33 score.  They continued with 5 more unanswered points and looked ready to run away with the game.  Megan Panagopoulos and all tournament player, Talya Dawson had other ideas and the two Wolverines led Coach Dave Sawczuk’s team on a 8-0 run to put the Quander Road school within 2 at 45-43 in the game’s final minute.

The play was hectic in the contest’s final seconds, Ireton ending up with possession of the ball with :02.1 left and the game still sitting at 45-43.  Senior Camille Weber was fouled, made the front end of the one-and-one, then wisely clanked the second shot off the rim, leaving the Wolverines with the ball on the wrong end of the floor and no time to get a shot.  In the end, it came down to two more three pointers and a free throw. Both squads had 15 field goals on the day, but the redbirds made 3 field goals from beyond the 3-point arc to one for West Potomac.  Ireton was 13 of 24 from the charity stripe, West Potomac 12 of 20.

“We survived that game.” said a relieved head coach, Derek Campbell. “We got great effort today in a tough ballgame, Julia (O’Brien), Camille (Weber), and Mara (Celis-Copelotti) gave us great leadership today as well.”  Celis-Copelotti joined Dawson on the all tourney team.  Stipano led all scorers with 18 points, Celis-Copelotti had 12, O’Brien 7, Weber 6, Gallahan 2, and Hatchett 1.  Dawson’s 11 led the Wolverines while Asia Mills-Burch had 10, Megan Panagopoulos 9, Blossom Pierre 7, Anna Carney and Shantelle Jennings each with 3.  Julia O’Brien hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Cardinals.

For Bishop Ireton, they take a break until the new year when  they travel to Good Counsel on Wednesday.  Tipoff for the varsity is slated for 6pm.

Bishop Ireton advances in Atlanta’s SPX Christmas tournament, 56-49

Junior Patrick Moseh is one of a number of Cardinals enjoying Ireton's fast start to the 2012-13 campaign.

Bishop Ireton (8-2) exploded with a 20-point second quarter, then hung on late to top Pope John Paul II (11-2) of Henderson, Tennessee, 56-49 in the quarterfinals of the St Pius X Christmas tournament in Atlanta Thursday.  The Cardinals will face Brother Martin High School (15-1) of New Orleans, Louisana’s 5th ranked team.  The Cardinals will either face host St Pius X or Archbishop Spaulding of Maryland in their final game on Saturday.

The Knights grabbed a 14-13 lead after one quarter before the Cardinals responded with a 20-7 avalanche in the second to bolt to a 33-21 halftime advantage.  John Paul II would trim six off that lead during the game’s third period, forcing Ireton turnovers that cut the lead to three during the early stages of the second half.

It would dwindle to a 1-point lead at the 2:32 mark in the game’s final quarter and the margin remained into the final minute of play.  Senior Davon Wiley made his only two free throw opportunities of the night with :34 secondst o play to push the margin to 3, then the Knights forced to more aggressive play saw Ireton cash in with free throws to pull away to a deceiving 7-point win.

Senior Louie Khouri, with three 3-pointers and a 7-8 free throw shooting night, led Ireton scoring with 18.  The always dependable junior, Dan Noe added 13, Patrick Moseh had 9, and senior Davon Wiley 6.  Taylor McHugh had 4 on the evening, Wynn Miller 3, Ty Quarles chipped in a bucket and senior Richie Kampchoum added a free throw in addition to his keys minutes on defense during the big second quarter for the redbirds.

Ireton returns home for their WCAC home opener Wednesday, Jan 2. A tripleheader affair on the final day of Christmas break, the freshmen tip off at 2:30, JV at 4:15, and varsity action is slated for a 6pm start.

Cardinals smother Falls Church to advance to finals of Joe Cascio Classic, 43-31

2012-13 Cardinals look for a Joe Cascio Classic title when they face West Potomac at noon Friday.

Even when the shots weren’t falling, Bishop Ireton played an aggressive defense and rode the rebounding of Julia O’Brien to outlast winless Falls Church in the opening round of the Joe Cascio Classic at Falls Church Thursday.

Senior Camille Weber led the Cardinals in scoring with 9 on a day when nine different redbirds scored for the WCAC squad.  Mara Celis-Copelotti had 8 points, Alex Stipano 7, while Danielle Hatchett, Illeanna Gutierrez, and O’Brien chipped in 4 each.  Heather Pearson had 3 and Taylor Gallahan and Kelly Gallagher each added a bucket.  The Jaguars’ freshman Amber Ecelbarger led all scorers in the game with 11.

Ireton started slowly, falling behind 5-0 before rebounding to claim a 13-12 advantage after the first period.  Ireton opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run before the Jags would cut the lead with a 8-5 spurt to close the deficit to 26-20 at halftime.

The scoring slowed during the third quarter, Falls Church pressured the ball which resulted in Ireton turnovers and shots would not fall when the Cardinals did get good looks. Similarly, Coach Derek Campbell cycled players through the lineup keeping the pace quick for the visiting private school, sometimes perhaps a little too quick as Ireton played as if it were racing against an expiring shot clock, something not employed in public school play.  The clubs entered the game’s final period with the redbirds leading by nine at 35-26.

The reserves spelled the starters as the 4th period began and their energy expanded the lead to 39-28 in the opening minutes of the stanza.  Both teams then liberally substituted as the game concluded at 43-31.

Ireton seemed to hold a substantial advantage on the glass, led by the rebounding of Julia O’Brien, and the club shot a season high 67% from the free throw line, an important aspect as the cold shooting Cardinals hovered in the 25% range for shooting from the field.

For Bishop Ireton (7-5) nearby public school neighbor, West Potomac (5-5), provides the championship opponent Friday at noon, again at Falls Church High School.  Admission is $5 at the door.  The team will return to WCAC play on Wednesday when they head to Olney, Maryland, on the final day of the Christmas holiday for an early start. Freshmen tipoff at 2:30, JV at 4:15, and the varsity contest is slated for a 6pm start.

Stags Overwhelm the field to win Ireton Holiday Invitational Wrestling tourney

Riding on the strength of 8 championships in 14 weight classes, DeMatha Catholic High School easily captured the annual Ireton Invitational wrestling title Saturday, December 15th in Father George Godley Gym.  Benedictine of Richmond was second, Potomac School of McLean was third, the Cardinals earned a 4th place finish, edging Bullis. Pope John Paul the Great was 6th, while the Model School for the Deaf was 7th. Woodberry Forest withdrew days before the tourney, leaving the 8th place vacant.

Bishop Ireton’s lone champion was 285 pounder, Jimmy Keegan. The top seed in his weight class, the Cardinal tackle in football drew a bye in the first round before decisioning the Bullis School’s Goedon George 13-7 in the semifinals, who wrestled as an unscoring entrant. He faced another Bullis Bulldog, Phil Bryant for the championship.  Keegan topped the second seeded Bryant with a fall in 3:15 to earn the title.

Jeff Severini fell in the finals at 145 for Ireton’s lone second place finish. A second seed, Severini decisioned Phil Moseley of DeMatha 9-6 before pinning Potomac School’s Hunter Johnson in :38 in the tournament’s semifinal round. The lanky Cardinal fell to Larry Lopez of DeMatha in the championship bout by an 8-1 count.

Bishop Ireton had three wrestlers earn third place finishes.  Zach Lincoln (126), Tommy Kelly (152), and freshman Trey Lovisone (195) wrestled back successfully to earn points for the Cardinals.  Lincoln was pinned in his quarterfinal match by Braxton Walker of Benedictine, but bounced back in the consolation round to pin Tim Figueroa of DeMatha in 2:22, then stopped Ayinde Calhoun of Bullis by a fall in 1:43. Bulldog Blake Mathews of Bullis was Lincoln’s final victim, a 11-7 decision for the Cardinal.

Senior Tommy Kelly, a three seed at 152, was pinned by second seed, Cope Whitney of Potomac School in his quarterfinal match, then decisioned John Paul the Great’s Paul Roder, 6-0 and pinned teammate Joe Seidlarz, wrestling unattached to Ireton scoring, in 1:39. Seidlarz had earlier pinned Don McLarson of DeMatha in 3:49.

Freshman Trey Lovisone, a number 4 seed, advanced in the quarterfinals by pinning Tristan Hower of the Model School in 1:46, before top-seeded Sean Spazoff of Potomac School decked Lovisone in 1:26.  The determined Cardinal went right back to work in the consolation round, pinning Conor Fogarty of Benedictine in 78 seconds, and following that with another fall at 2:22 again defeating his first opponent, Hower of Model.

Three more Ireton wrestlers placed for the host team, including junior Conor Reilly at 106, Chris Macey at 132, and freshman Devon Reed at 138.

Ireton boys claim first WCAC basketball win 58-48 on the road

Senior Louie Khouri (10), a sharpshooting guard, led a balanced scoring attack at Carroll in a 58-48 win.

Bishop Ireton’s 14th-ranked Cardinals have played exceptionally well on the road this young season, but have played some of the area’s top teams while doing so.   After jumping to large first half leads on foreign courts against top ranked Paul VI and perenially tough St Johns, the Cardinals have watched those advantages melt in the second half and eventually turn into last minute setbacks.  Their third consecutive conference road game was a tight contest from the opening tip, but this time it was the redbirds  that pulled away late for a 58-48 win.

The Lions (1-8,0-3), struggling with a tough nonconference slate, they entered the Sunday contest playing their third game in three days.  Coming off a lopsided win over nonconference Don Bosco Cristo Rey following a loss to Bishop O’Connell, Carroll played the Cardinals close, trailing 16-14 after one period.

The game remained a see saw affair, and Ireton held a slim 25-24 advantage at the intermission.  Carroll, led by Haskins’ game-high 22 points, took a 5-point lead midway through the third quarter, only to see Ireton counterattack  and again end the third period up bya  40-38 count. The final quarter continued the trend as neither team wrestled control of the game, with four minutes remaining it was still a 4-point contest.

Familiar territory for the Alexandrians, close game on the road with a league opponent, but this time it was Cambridge Road school that muscled its way to a 9-point lead with 2 minutes to play and rode home to the ten point final. Key for the visiting Cardinals was a huge advantage from the charity stripe. While Ireton shot only 17 of 27 from the “line”, it was the difference as Carroll had only 4 opportunities the entire game and made but one.

Ireton had three players in double figures with senior Louie Khouri scoring 17, junior Dan Noe with 16, Pat Moseh added 10, and guard Taylor McHugh chipped in 9.  Haskins was the game high leader with 22, Rowles had 12, but no other Lion scored more than 5 for the home team.

The Cardinals (7-2, 1-2) head to Atlanta, Georgia, for the Pius X holiday tournament.  They will open on Thursday, Dec 27th at 7:30pm against John Paul II of Nashville, Tennessee, who enter the game sporting an impressive 11-1 record. After three games in three days, the club returns to Alexandria for their WCAC home opener, a tripleheader matinee on the final day of the holiday break.  The Falcons of Good Counsel call on the ‘birds, with the freshmen game tipping off at 2:30, JV at 4:15, and the varsity matchup at 6pm.

Turner, Lions Hand Cardinals Girls’ Hoops Setback, 53-42

Sophomore Alexandra Stipano led Bishop Ireton scoring with 8 in their loss to Archbishop Carroll in Godley Gym Sunday.

The Cardinals had no answer for Archbishop Carroll’s Olivia Turner Sunday, and the Lion’s senior poured in a game-high 23 points as the visitors cruised to their third win of the season in Alexandria.  For Bishop Ireton, the game appeared to be a struggle, as shots didn’t fall and rebounds seemed to find only green jerseys.

The Lions, led by Turner, started fast and jumped to an 18-9 first quarter advantage. Isabelle Kendal gave Ireton its only lead at 1-0, but Carroll’s Courtney Crawford responded with a three  and the Lions were off to the races. While the visitors hit jump shots and layups, nothing fell for Cardinals and they scored only with free throws in the game’s opening minutes. That too proved a difficult task on the afternoon as Ireton would end the game only 14 for 30 from the charity stripe and tally but 14 field goals for the game.

Carroll continued to score in the second period, and the Cardinals likewise picked up the pace offensively but the teams broke for intermission with Carroll owning a 16-point bulge at 38-22.  Both teams struggled out of the locker room in the third quarter, scoring a combined 11 points to send the contest to the final stanza with Ireton trailing 43-28.

The Cardinals shaved four more points off the lead in the fourth quarter but the contest was long decided as the home team fell to 6-5 on the season and 0-4 in the WCAC.  Alex Stipano led the Cardinals in scoring with 8, Danielle Hatchett, Cece Leone, and Camille Weber all added 7 for the Cardinals. In addition to Turner’s 23, Crawford chipped in 12 for the visitors, who improved to 5-2 on the campaign, a respectable 3-1 in the WCAC.

Bishop Ireton will travel to Falls Church for the Joe Cascio Classic on Dec 27 and 28.  Ireton will open with the host team, Falls Church at noon on the the 27th, if they overcome the Jaguars, they will meet the winner of West Potomac vs JEB Stuart at noon Friday. A loss on Thursday will send them to the consolation final at 10am on Friday.  The team then returns to WCAC on Wednesday, January 2d as they play a tripleheader at Good Counsel. Freshmen tip off at 2:30, JV at 4:15, varsity at 6pm.

Busy week of hockey ends with win over O’Connell, 9-7

Sophomore Ryan Scott is off to a fast start for the Cardinals, scoring against St Albans here earlier in the campaign.

After a tough loss to division rival and perennial powerhouse Woodbridge to start the week, the Bishop Ireton varsity ice hockey team looked to close out the 2012 portion of their schedule on an upswing. With back-to-back games last Thursday and Friday, they were given the chance to do just that and they didn’t disappoint. A 5-5 tie with Osbourn Park and a thrilling come from behind 9-7 victory over Bishop O’Connell raised their season mark to 2-4-1 and kept their playoff hopes alive heading into the break.

The Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets welcomed the Cardinals to Prince William Ice Center last Thursday for a 4:00 pm start. The Ireton squad arrived ready to play, quickly jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st on goals by Phillip Thomas, Nick Tangora and Ryan Scott, the leading scorer thus far for the Cardinals. After a score late in the period by the Jackets, Scott netted his 2nd of the game and 5th of the season to send Ireton into the break leading 4-1.

Duke Roach extended the lead to 5-1 early in the 2nd and the Ireton squad looked to be on their way to their 2nd victory of the season. The OP squad, however, had other ideas. Despite taking a 5-2 advantage into the 3rd period, the Cardinals were unable to hang on, surrendering 3 goals in the last 8 minutes of the game. Some key saves late by goalie Michaela Mulokey allowed the Cards to salvage a tie. The scorers for the game were led by Ryan Scott with 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist), Nick Tangora and Duke Roach with 2 points (1 G, 1 A), and 1 point each for Phillip Thomas with a goal, while Stephen Gerke, Johnathan Chin, Luke Burton and Patrick Coyne each contributed an assist.

The Cardinal squad was on the road again on Friday, taking on archrival Bishop O’Connell at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington. The 4:00 pm tilt did not start well for the Bishop Ireton team, as the Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the 1st. Despite some early chances, the Cardinals were unable to dent the O’Connell net until Ryan Scott finally broke through late in the period to cut the O’Connell lead to 2-1. Will Chastain tied the contest minutes later on a feed from Nick Tangora, and the period ended with the teams tied at 2-2.

The 2nd period saw the Cardinals take the lead twice, only to have the Knights tie the game back up each time with goals of their own on the next shift. Joe Gorman notched his 1st of the season, while Will Chastain picked up his 2nd of the game and 3rd of the season in the period. The teams headed into the 3rd tied 4-4, and setting up a thrilling last period of hockey in Arlington.

The Ireton offense came out strong, determined to take it to the O’Connell team and head into the holiday break with a win. Sustained early offensive pressure paid off as Captain Nick Tangora scored a pair of goals just 90 seconds apart staking the Cardinals to a 6-4 lead 3 minutes into the final frame. After the Knights cut the lead to 6-5, Phillip Thomas took a feed from Ryan Scott and netted his 5th goal of the season, restoring the 2 goal Cardinals advantage. The Ireton offense was not done yet however as Stephen Gerke scored two more goals, his 4th and 5th of the season, just 90 seconds apart, extending the lead to 9-5 with 3 minutes left and all but closing out the game. The Knights would not go down without a fight and managed to close to within 2 goals with under a minute to play but they would get no closer. The 9-7 win was the Cardinals 2nd of the season.

The scoring barrage in this game was led by Ryan Scott with 5 points (1 G, 4 A), Nick Tangora and Will Chastain with 4 points (2 G, 2 A), Stephen Gerke with 3 points (2 G, 1 A), Phillip Thomas and Joe Gorman with 2 points ( 1 G, 1 A), and Duke Roach, Patrick Coyne and Sam Ratner with 1 point each (1 A).
