Wrestlers battle youth, tough WCAC schedule in 2012-13 schedule released Friday

Senior Nick Womack is among Ireton's most experienced wrestlers returning for the 2012-13 campaign.

Coach Don Dight is coming off a pair of seasons with more than 20 dual wins, a couple of tournament championships, and two first-team, all-Met wrestlers on his resume’.   With another challenging season ahead and crew of anxious, but young wrestlers returning, the Cardinals will be an exciting team to watch develop.

The grapplers will start December 1st when they head to St James School for a season-opening tournament, then begin the dual meet season, Wednesday, Dec 4th,  in McLean with the Panthers of Potomac School.  December 15th brings the annual Bishop Ireton Holiday Classic wrestling tournament in Godley Gym.  The Cardinals will have onlytwo other home events,  a pair of WCAC triangulars, where they host St Johns and Good Counsel on January 21st in Godley Gymnasium and the Knights, both O’Connell and St Mary’s Ryken, visit on January 30th.

The Cardinals will head to the Northern Region tournament again this year at Fairfax High School.  The two-day affair, Dec 7th and 8th, is a 32-team mega tournament. Last year, the redbirds 9th place finish was the highest by a private school and yielded a champion at 215 in all-Met Andrew Lutterloh, now off to wrestle for King College in Tennessee.  Ireton will return to the St Stephen’s Christmas tournament on Dec 28th, the King George Tournament downstate in January, as well as the Catholic Commonwealth Tournament at Benedictine on Jan 19th.

The annual WCAC championship tournament will be hosted by St John’s on Feb 2.  The march begins then with St Albans tourney the following weekend, then the VISAA state championships, and National Preps closes the campaign.

Senior volleyball player Emileigh Rettig of Alexandria, Virginia, was selected to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division I first team, all state squad Saturday.

The outside hitter for Bishop Ireton ended the 2012 campaign 4th in the Washington Post in kills with 380 and 10th in the Post in digs with 413, second overall in the WCAC in that category.  “It’s a great honor to be included on this all state team, but it is a team game and my teammates put me in the position to have this success.” said Rettig.

“It is a culmination of all the hard work and dedication she has invested the past four years. It all came together for her, and her family, this year.  We always knew she had this type of potential.  She will continue to get better when she gets to college.” said her coach, Kathy Gutmann.

Rettig was named to the first team, all WCAC volleyball squad earlier in the month and the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club selected her as the Club’s Athlete of the Month in September.  Her volleyball plans after high school are still a work in progress.

Cardinals rally to beat Forest Park/Mountain View in Hockey Opener, 9-7

Freshman Ryan McDonald had a big 4-point night in his first game as a Cardinal with three golas and an assist.

A great home crowd was on hand at the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center last Friday night as the Bishop Ireton Ice Hockey team opened the 2012-13 season with a 7:00 pm tilt against division foe Forest Park/Mountain View with a come from behind, 9-7 win. Unfortunately they had little to cheer about early on as the Cardinals fell behind 3-1 just 5 minutes into the game. With the Cardinal offense slow to get started, the Bruins closed out the 1st frame with a 4-1 lead. Ryan McDonald, one of seven Freshman on this year’s squad, had the only tally for Ireton, netting his first of the season.

Two quick Forest Park goals early in the 2nd period extended the lead to 6-1. With the Bruins on a power play and threatening to blow the game open, Stephen Gerke scored short-handed on a feed from Phillip Thomas to cut the deficit to 6-2. That goal would serve to finally awaken both the home crowd and the potent Cardinal offense, and would be the first of 8 unanswered goals scored by the Bishop Ireton team. Duke Roach and Phillip Thomas each notched their first of the season, and Ryan McDonald closed out the scoring in the 2nd stanza with his third goal and the Cardinals had clawed their way back to a 6-6 deadlock after 2 periods.

Picking up right where they left off, the Ireton squad scored three more times in the 3rd period, upping their lead to 9-6. The go-ahead goal, giving Ireton its’ first lead of the game and the season, was scored by another Freshman, Johnathan Chin, just over a minute into the period. With the frenzied Ireton crowd firmly behind the team, Duke Roach, with his second, and Ryan Scott closed out the scoring. The Bruins weren’t done yet however, scoring a late goal with just over 2 minutes left in the game to cut the lead to 9-7, but it was too little too late. Despite playing the last 53 seconds at a 2-man disadvantage, the Cardinals were able to withstand a furious Forest Park rally to stem the scoring and finish out the game without any further damage.

The offensive attack on this night was led by a pair of 4-point efforts turned in by Ryan McDonald (3 G, 1 A) and Ryan Scott (1 G, 3 A). Duke Roach (2 G, 1 A), Phillip Thomas (1 G, 1 A), Johnathan Chin (1 G, 1 A), Nick Tangora (2 A), Stephen Gerke (1 G) and Patrick Coyne (1 A) rounded out the scoring. Michaela Mulokey, making her first start in net, had 10 saves for the win. The Cardinals next game is on the road this Friday night, November 16th, at 8:10 pm against Yorktown at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington. They finish out the weekend with a Sunday contest against Freedom

After Christmas, Bishop Ireton returns to the Pope Pius X Invitational tournament after a long absence on December 27-29.   The Gonzaga tilt in February is the final home game on the schedule, with the regular season coming to a conclusion on February 15th when Ireton journeys to Arlington to face the Knights of Bishop O’Connell.  The Cardinals will also host Alumni Night at the Januray 25th contest with Archbishop Carroll, when the Ireton Alumni Office will welcome back two teams of alums to battle it out with a 6pm tipoff in between the JV and varsity tipoff.

WCAC Honors Cardinal all Conference Soccer Selections

Senior Kyle Brynteson joined Mori Diane on the WCAC all conference team announced Friday.

The WCAC announced the 2011 all conference teams for both boys and girls soccer.  The Cardinals landed four players on the first team, three second team selections, and seven players on the honorable mention list as well as capturing the first coach of the year award since Marianna Sullivan won the award in 2010.

Boys team captain Mori Diane was Bishop Ireton’s first team selectee.  He led the Cardinals with 18 goals and 9 assists for the season and, more importantly to Coach Jon Norem, Diane was the leader by example on the field.  The rangy senior is exploring his college soccer opportunities, including possibly Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

They were joined by their head coach, Jon Norem, selected by his peers.  “Jon clearly did a great job this season, we were the most improved team in the league without question. Our team has seen plenty of tough times in the past couple years, I was thrilled to see their hard work rewarded with a winning season. ” commented Bishop Ireton athletic director, Bill Simmons. “Jon has patiently coached, taught, and encouraged his players and it is obvious in the performance on the field.  I am glad for Jon that his colleagues took this step to publically recognize his work.”

Said Norem of the award, “I told the team that this is really a reflection of their efforts, it speaks to what they are doing on the field, not what I am doing on the sidelines. I am honored to recognized, but this is really about what the players earned.”

Senior Kyle Brynteson was a second team all conference honoree, as a middle fielder. He was joined by honorably mentioned Cardinals Preston Haugh, Spencer Amarantides, and goalkeeper Andrew Perham.

The girls team, under head coach Gino Leon,  had another strong season. The conference’s coaches recognized Bishop Ireton’s efforts with three first-team, all WCAC picks. Senior Karina Azar was selected as a forward while teammates junior forward Adrienne Maday and defender Emily Gupton  joined her on the elite team. More good news for next year as the coaches tapped junior defender Natalia Barrow and freshman forward Lilian Webber for the league’s second team, all conference squad.

Three of four honorable mentions return next fall, junior midfielder Kenza Alaoui joined sophomore middies Grace Hamilton and Corinna Vasques on the list with senior defender Nicole Bond.   “It was a strong season for a team that expects nothing less than great seasons,” suggested Ireton’s Simmons of the girls’ selections. “We have established our program as among the strongest in the area. That win over Bethesda-Chevy Chase, the 4-time Maryland state champs was no fluke. Being invited to McDonogh in the first place is evidence of the respect they have achieved. Of course, once you get that respect you have to work to keep it.”

The WCAC selected a pair of players as Player of the Year for both boys and girls, while Holy Cross’ Nelson Abreau was the girls coach of the year.  Midge Purce of Good Counsel and Morgan Reuther of Bishop O’Connell shared the girls’ honor while Nicholas Corriveaue of Gonzaga and Chris Odoi-Atsew of DeMatha tied for the boys’ award.

Cardinals Taste a Win in Season Finale, 41-21

Senior Justin Paige returned punts, intercepted passes, and generally did it all in his final game as a Cardinal.

Bishop Ireton (1-9) ended the 2012 football season on a positive note with a lopsided 41-21 win over Pope John Paul the Great (2-8) that was not as close as the final score might suggest.  After a season of near misses and bad breaks, everything fell into place for the Cardinals enroute to a 34-0 halftime lead.

For the Cardinals it was a nearly flawless first half.  On the game’s third play from scrimmage, junior linebacker Hudson Sullivan picked off  Austin Otter’s first pass of the day and returned it to the Wolves 42-yard line.  The visitors needed only 4 plays to cover the distance, with Justin Paige hauling in a PJ Zingler toss for 30 yards and an Ireton touchdown.  Sophomore Ben Zagata-Hurley added the extra point to give the white-jerseyed Cardinals a 7-0 lead.

Sullivan and freshman Trey Levisone combined for a sack on John Paul the Great’s next possession to force a Wolves’ punt.  Neither team could muster a drive until Ireton gained possession late in first quarter.  A nine-play drive that included a pair of 4th down conversions led to Ireton claiming a 14-0 lead when Zingler found Brandon Price-Williams out of the backfield and the senior broke a pair of tackles enroute to a 17-yard touchdown with :29.4 seconds left in the first.

Following Justin Paige’s 36-yard punt return to the JPGHS 27-yard line, Bishop Ireton quickly scored its third touchdown. Sophomore Andrew Latrash took a handoff on consecutive plays, once for 18 yards, then for the final nine and Ireton had a 21-0 lead with 9:29 to play.

A series of miscues by both teams ensued as John Paul the Great misplayed the kickoff into an Ireton recovery only to see junior Matthew Rayhel intercept Zingler on the next play. The Wolves would return the ball to the redbirds however, as a halfback pass from Michael Horan went off the fingers of junior JR Brandon-Hooker and into the hands of Justin Paige, who was seemingly everywhere on the field Saturday. The interception put Ireton deep in John Paul the Great territory and two plays later Zingler hit senior Austin Carter on a 10-yard slant to make it 28-0 less than a minute after Ireton’s last score.

Freshman punter Matthew Nguyen attempted to field a low snap on the home team’s next possession, but when his knee touched the grass, the ball was dead at that point.   A costly mistake for the Wolves that the visitors immediately cashed in with a error-plagued drive by both clubs. Nonetheless, five plays later, Carter fielded a screen pass and raced up the middle 18 yards for an Ireton touchdown.  A missed PAT sent the game to halftime 34-0.

The second half would see the Cardinals tack on a final tally when Latrash plowed in from a yard out and plenty of playing time for many Ireton reserves.  The Wolves continued to play on hard on their Senior Day finale, but the contest was long before decided even as the green and black host team narrowed the final margin.  The game was interrupted following an apparent neck injury to the Wolves’ junior Sam White, a defensive lineman, on the Latrash touchdown run.  Following the delay, the inspired John Paul squad added a pair of touchdowns to close out the scoring.  The condition of the injured White was unknown at the conclusion of the contest.

As is his usual practice, Coach Verducci spoke to the team on the field immediately following the game, summing up his feelings in three points: he was so very happy for the team and its seniors to cap the season off with a victory; he hoped they would fondly recall experiences that outshine their record; and he expressed his joyin coaching this team as much as any other in his eleven years at Bishop Ireton. As the sun set on a glorious afternoon, the team reflected Coach Verducci’s commitment by shouting “Brotherhood!” before they left the field.
