Alum selected captain of Morgan State cheer

2011 Bishop Ireton alumnus, Whitney Cook, as been selected as a captain for the Morgan State University’s cheer squad.  The rising sophomore is a biology major at the Baltimore university.  Her coach, Angela Hope-Eschew was thrilled for her former cheerleader.  “This is just fantastic news.  Coming on the heels of Christine Snyder’s success making the cheer squad at the University of Virginia we are just bowled over by the good fortune our cheerleaders are experiencing.”

“My first year of college was very demanding, however my experiences at Bishop Ireton prepared me for the challenge.  The academic groundwork was invaluable” reported Cook.  “Bishop Ireton gave me a solid foundation of prioritizing work load and daily study habits which allowed me to be successful in the college environment. In addition to the academic preparation, Coach Angela and BI cheerleading equipped me for the rigorous physical activity of collegiate athletic life.”

Cook earned 3.54 in her first year and was  inducted into four national honor societies – Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, Promethean Kappa Tau, and the national society of collegiate scholars.  As a member of the MSU spirit cheerleading team she cheered for football games and basketball games (home and away games).  Her dedication and tenacity were recognized by my MSU coaches and peers, she reported when she was actually selected to be a captain for the 2012 spirit cheerleading squad  though she didn’t pursue the position.

She recounted that on the days when she felt like giving up, she would remember one of the teachings of St. Francis DeSales – “Be Who You Are and Be That Well”. Inspired by that reminder, she  pushed forward and tried to do her very best.  “Thank you to the BI community because my success would not have been possible without the support from all of you!” commented Morgan State’s newest cheer captain.

Cardinal Softball ends another successful campaign

2012 Cardinals qualified for state playoffs and advanced to WCAC semifinals

After finishing the regular season with an 11-11 record, the Cardinal softball team entered the post season.   The girls defeated PVI 9-2 in the WCAC
quarterfinals before losing to the 25th ranked team in the country, Bishop O’Connell in the semi finals.  In the state tournament the team lost to Saint Stephens/St. Agnes in the first round.

Seven Cardinals were voted by the WCAC and VISAA coaches for season honors.  Senior Debbie Ward was named first team All-WCAC and second team All State.  Debbie pounded out 33 hits, 3 home runs and 3 triples on the season, getting the attention of opposing coaches.  She will play at Mount Olive College next year.  Senior pitcher Micki Crouch struck out over 120 batters this season on her way to a place on the All WCAC first team.  In her last at bat in an Ireton uniform, she spanked a home run over the fence at SSSA.  Micki will play for Dickenson College next year.  Senior Co-Captain Katie Kiesner received an honorable mention from the coaches and will be remembered in part for defensive versatility and her grand slam against Ryken.

Both of the team’s juniors, Emily Quinn and Kathleen Walsh received honorable mention recognition and will be coming back to lead next year’s team.  Despite missing much of the season due to injury, Sophomore Susie Rhodes was named to the All WCAC second team, after receiving honorable mention honors last year.  Sophomore Heather Pearson received All WCAC first team and All State first team honors.

“We are going to miss this group of talented seniors and I am so thrilled that two of them will be playing at the college level,” commented second year coach Terri Pearson.  “Meanwhile, we have a solid core of players returning for next year to keep building the program.”

Lutterloh, Zeigler highlight 11th annual Varsity Athletic Awards Banquet

Bob Pollard Distinguished Alumni Award winner BJ Sullivan addressed the more than 340 attendees about his years at Bishop Ireton as a swimmer.

Seniors Andrew Lutterloh and Maddie Zeigler received the prestigious Father George Godley Award for Excellence in Athletics at the 11th annual Varsity Athletic Awards Banquet at the Hilton Mark Center ballroom on Thursday, May 17th.  Ryan Fannon, director of alumni relations and long time voice of Villanova Wildcat football and basketball, again donated his expertise to serve as the master of ceremonies for the gala.

The event drew over 340 attendees and saw Bishop Ireton award the most valuable player and Cardinal awards to athletes on 28 different varsity teams, as well as recognize an alumus of the year, two coaches, the spirit of a graduating senior,  a 4-year team manager, and the dedicated service of a long time Ireton parent.

For the committee, Andrew Lutterloh, a two-time state wrestling champion and  a 2012 prep all American, first team all Met wrestler, as well as an all state football lineman, it was not a hard decision to select the King College-bound senior, according to athletic director, Bill Simmons.  “We had a number of exceptional athletes in this year’s class of seniors, but Andrew’s resume was a tough one to beat in the eyes of the varsity coaches.”  Likewise, the girls’ recipient, Maddie Zeigler, not only claimed the girls’ award, but also the MVP of the field hockey, swim & dive, and girls’ lacrosse teams.

The Cardinal award, presented to a boy and girl that best display those characteristics of dedication, commitment to more than one varsity team, and are the example of a model teammate, went to three-sport letterman Andrew Bladen and volleyball/basketball’s Laura Hart. Bladen was a team leader on the School’s 8-3 football team, the wrestling team, and versatile player on this spring’s baseball club.  Hart, the MVP of the volleyball team and basketball team was a natural leader on both squads, say her coaches.

Gino Leon, first-year mentor of the 16th nationally ranked girls soccer team, was the only coach to get his squad to a WCAC championship date, and did so by stunning the previously undefeated and nationally top ranked Good Counsel in the semi finals, 2-0. It was Leon’s third year with the Cardinals, his first at the helm after two seasons with Marianna Sullivan.

Boys JV lacrosse head coach Mike Blaine, was tapped for the Chris Delaware Memorial Award, given annually to the School’s top assistant coach or junior varsity coach that exemplifies the dedication, passion, and hard work to their sport as well as their loyalty to Bishop Ireton. Blaine has led the JV program for more than 3 years, including a 6-5 campaign this spring, as well as organized the program’s annual alumni lacrosse day, published a quarterly Lax newsletter to players and alumni of Bishop Ireton lacrosse, and served as the past president of the School’s Fathers’ Club.

Alumnus BJ Sullivan, class of 1983, was recognized with the Bob Polllard Distinguished Alumni Award. After swimming for the Cardinals, he walked on at William & Mary to swim for his 4 years. The current president of the Bishop Ireton Alumni Association regaled the crowd with a few stories that emphasized how many life-long friends our athletes will take from their Bishop Ireton sports experience, as he did, many of whom joined him at the banquet.

Senior Matt Krause, the 4-year “voice of Bishop Ireton” as the public address announcer for varsity football, boys’ basketball, and baseball, received the Father Edward Roszko Spirit Award.  Krause logged 88 varsity events at the microphone for the Cardinals, welcoming, informing, and thrilling thousands of Cardinal fans with a professional presentation and a voice that visiting fans couldn’t believe belonged to a high school student. Each of his games was marked by professional presentation and unequalled attention to detail, whether pronouncing a player’s name or presenting a sponsor’s message.

The manager of the year award was initiated in the 2011 banquet to celebrate the largely unrecognized work of so many of our student managers who take great care of the unglamourous, oft overlooked, and never noticed details until they are missing, according to Simmons. Rachel Guenther, the 4-year manager of the baseball team, was selected by the varsity coaches for the 2012 award. Guenther was unique in her four-year commitment to the position of manager, and served with selfless dedication and commitment in the words of Coach Mike Gallagher, who nominated her.

The Service Award was presented to Dr. Larry Clark, the outgoing president of the athletic booster club.  In addition to serving in that capacity, Dr Clark led efforts to establish the now 3-year old homecoming Cardinal 5k race that has grown in popularity.  Additionally, Clark has spearheaded the club’s annual athletic physical examination fundraiser, not only by performing dozens of athletic physical exams for free, but also organizing and recruiting other medical professionals to join him in the annual event that raises thousands of dollars for the athletic booster club.  Under his leadership the club also hosted a dance for the BI parent community with live music, an opportunity to gather for an evening of fun rather than simply to raise money.

Stotesbury Cup action finishes a successful 2012 Rowing Season

Cardinal girls in action at Stotesbury Cup regatta in Philadelphia Friday.

The Bishop Ireton men’s and women’s rowing teams completed their 2012 seasons this past weekend with a strong showing at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, PA.  The women’s varsity led the charge – placing 17th in the opening round time-trial and 16th in the semi-finals.  Racing in one of the deepest fields at recent Stotesbury Cups, the varsity men rowed a season-fastest time of 4 minutes 28 seconds to a 26th place finish.  All other Bishop Ireton boats improved on last year’s finishes – including the freshmen teams – boding well for the future of the program.

Overall, the Bishop Ireton Rowing teams season was a success. During the regular season, the team retained all of their competitive cups – the Bishop’s Cup, The Cindy Cole Cup, and the Anacostia Invite Championship. At the WMIRA League Championship, the Cardinals placed both varsity boats in the grand final for the first time in team history. In which the men placed 4th overall and the women raced to a bronze earning 3rd place finish.

When asked about his programs strong finish to the 2012 season, Head Coach Eric Gehrke was excited for the future, “I think it is a huge testament to the work ethic of our athletes that we continued to improve and get stronger as the season wore on. All of their off-season training really paid off and was what directly led to our success at WMIRAs. I also think this is the deepest Ireton team I have coached and look forward to the effect all of our young athletes will have on this program over the next few years.”

PVI stops Ireton in semi’s enroute to State baseball title,5-1

Junior catcher Corey Phillips, above, was a first team all-WCAC selection for the Cardinals in 2012.

Bishop Ireton’s determined march through the VISAA’s baseball tournament was derailed in a 5-1 semifinal setback to eventual division I champs, Paul VI on Friday.

The Panthers scored a pair of runs in the top of the second off junior Cody Hagenston, but Ireton countered in third when Andrew Selby drove in Corey Phillips with what would be the Cardinals lone run in the contest.

PVI added three in 5th to seal the deal.  For the Cardinals, it was much  about not playing their best defensively, the game started with an error on a throw to first, and being unable to capitalize on the chances they had to score. Both teams had but four hits in the contest, both squads made three errors.  It came down to a well pitched game by Hagenston, but the Panthers did a better job in exploiting opportunities.

The Cardinals finished the season at 14-14, 6-12 in the rugged WCAC and a “final 4” appearance in the state tourney. Their 6th seed was their highest in two years in the state playoffs, and sweeping the season series with both Bishop O’Connell and DeMatha were among the highlights of their strongest spring since back-to-back appearances in the WCAC championship games in 2008-2009 seasons.

School mark falls in WCAC track championships

Sophomore Ricca Graham was a leading point scorer for the Cardinals at the WCAC track & field championships at Good Counsel Saturday.

The WCAC track championships, won by Gonzaga on the boys side, Elizabeth Seton on the girls side, brought out some of the season’s best efforts from the Cardinal track and field team over the weekend, led by a School record-setting performance in the 4×200.

The boys 4×200 meter relay team lowered their record time 1:34.34, which earned a 4th place finish. The speedy team of Tavon Smith, Justin Paige,  Brandon Price-Williams, and Andrew Baehre  will lose only Baehre to graduation.  Ireton earned a 5th place in the 4×100 relay in a time of :45.04, and an 8th place in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:41.77.  Senior MVP BJ Townley grabbed a third place in the 300 meter hurdles, a 6th in the 11o meter hurdles, and a third in the triple jump to lead the boys’ individual scoring.

The girls team was paced by Ricca Graham and Karen Gusmer. Junior Nicole Bond and Graham finished 7th and 8th respectively in the 200 meter dash in times of :26. 52 and :27.37.  Gusmer earned a 7th place finish in the 800 meters and ran as part of the 4×400 meter relay that snared a 6th place finish.  Graham added an 8th place finish in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:01.87. Katie Necochea was a 6th place finisher in the grueling 3200 meters in a time of 12:51.42 to round out the scoring for Ireton.

Ireton lax falls to Saints in state title game, 15-4

Team MVP and School's Fr Godley Award winning Maddie Zeigler and 9 seniors played their final lacrosse game for Ireton in Saturday's state championship.

Bishop Ireton’s girls lacrosse team (15-7, 6-2) climbed to the top of the VISAA division I lacrosse mountain Saturday, but couldn’t overcome the nationally 9th-ranked  St Stephens/St Agnes Saints who won their 8th consecutive state championship since they began competing in the tournament, 15-4 at Old Dominion University.

Coach Rick Sofield’s squad had topped second seeded Collegiate School a day earlier at ODU, 9-5. The Cardinals trailed 5-3 with 15 minutes remaining, but turned up the pressure and scored the game’s final 6 goals and wore down the Richmond squad to win going away.  It was the redbirds’ first win over the Cougars after three close losses in two years, each of the games at Collegiate.

In the title game, the Saints grabbed a 4-1 lead early. Ireton stayed close until the final two minutes of the half, when a 5-2 deficit quickly became an 8-2 halftime bulge.  The Cardinals battled for much of the second half, down 10-4 with 15 minutes remaining before the talented Kathy Jenkins’ coached squad delivered the knockout scoring the contest’s final 5 goals.

“We had some good looks at the cage and didn’t take advantage of our limited opportunities,” said Sofield. “We aren’t to their level yet, but we are working to get there.”  The Cardinals were the 35th ranked girls team in the US according to USLacrosse, who conducts weekly rankings of more than 2400 high school teams.

The game was the final appearance for 11 seniors, including team MVP and the School’s Fr. George Godley Award winner, Maddie Zeigler and Cardinal Award winner for the squad, Eva Irwin.

Cardinal JV Boys Lax upends DeMatha, 8-5

Coach Mike Blaine's JV boys' lax posted a 6-5 record for the 2012 campaign.

The JV Men’s Lacrosse Cardinals played a complete game to earn a season ending 8-5 win over DeMatha on Fannon Field.

Sophomore Mid Kevin Abbed fed Freshman Attack Justin Fees on the crease during an EMO to take a 1-0 lead.  Less than one minute later, the Face Off earned the ball and Fees scored again with an assist from Freshman Mid Andrew Grabowski.  Sophomore Attack Jimmy Grant fed Freshman Attack Jack Kelly from X for Kelly’s first goal after an injury sidelined him most of the season. Fees completed a 1st quarter hat trick with an assist from Kelly.  The Cardinal defense limited the Stags to 2 shots on goal in the quarter.  BI led 4-0 after one quarter.

The Stags scored early in the 2nd quarter.  Three BI penalties resulted in one DeMatha goal and closed the score to 4-2.  Quick ball movement allowed Fees to feed Grant at 1:03 and again at 28.2. to extend the lead to 6-2.  Soph Attack Mitch Monroe picked up a ground ball near the crease and buried it in the high left corner with 13.7 seconds remaining. Thanks to an aggressive man to man defense led by Soph defensemen Andrew O’Hern, Jerome Dacurawat, Martin Klunder and Ian Rush, Soph Goalie Owen McHugh faced only 5 shots and made 3 saves in the period.   The Cardinals led 7-2 at the half.

Soph Mid Tom Owen scored on an EMO with an assist from Grant in the 1st minute of the 3rd period for an 8-2 lead.  Several failed clears resulted in three
DeMatha  goals.  The defense recovered and held DeMatha scoreless for the last 13 minutes and 12 seconds of the game.

BI controlled the ball in the 4th quarter, including a five shot possession, but could not score.  The defense faced another one minute man down
situation with 6:13 remaining in the game, but did not allow a goal.  The Cardinals kept the ball inside the restraining line for the last three minutes of the game to ensure the 8-5 win.

The Cardinals finished the season with a 6-5 record.

VISAA playoffs ahead for baseball, softball, girls lax

Pitcher Jake Gutman will be an important part of Ireton's run for a state championship beginning Tuesday.

The Cardinals have a busy week ahead as teams prepare for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division I playoffs.  Those playoffs see the redbirds all over the state, from the lacrosse team hosting their opening round contest to the baseball team lumbering down to Lynchburg to face Liberty Christian Academy.  Weather also threatens to complicate life for Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals.

The baseball team is slated to challenge LCA on Tuesday, though weather may push the game to Wednesday. The host Bulldogs may host the Cardinals at Liberty University on Tuesday or on the home diamond at LCA on Wednesday. Officials hope for a decision by Monday evening.  Winner will likely play #2 seeded PVI, winners of the 2012 WCAC title on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the softball team travels only a mile and a half for a rematch with the #4 seeded St Stephens/St Agnes on Tuesday at 4:30pm. The Cardinals, seeded 5th, outlasted the Saints 7-6 earlier in the season in 10 inning marathon on St Stephens Road. Winner of this match up will likely face WCAC champion, Bishop O’Connell on Friday in Petersburg.

The girls lacrosse team, a # 3 seed will host St Ann Belfield of Charlottsville on Tuesday, 5:30pm start. The Cardinals upended STAB in mid April by a 15-12 count on Fannon Field. Coach Rick Sofield’s charges hope to repeat the success and move on to likely face the number 2 seeded Collegiate School at ODU in Norfolk on Friday afternoon at 1:30.

Track teams fight, scramble, scratch to 3rd for girls, 4th for guys at Virginia Catholics

Junior Nicole Bond out of the blocks enroute to a win in the 100 meter dash Saturday.

Between illnesses, injuries, and absences, the shorthanded Cardinals juggled lineups and improvised to finish in the top 4 teams on both boys and girls side of the ledgers at the 2012 Virginia State Catholic Track and Field championships at the Abbey of Benedictine High School.  Coach Rita Williams, herself under the weather, was impressed by the team, many who gave personal best performances on a day when the Cardinals needed them most.

Moses Webb was quickly sidelined early in the meet with an injury in the 100 meters and Liam O’Connor was slowed by injury but managed to earn a 4th place finish in the 1600 meters.  Nonetheless, the setbacks left Bishop Ireton with only 11 healthy boys for the balance of the day.  A cobbled together 4×800 relay team of John-Paul Ryan, Stephen Washington, Daniel Burns, and Conor Pearson earned desperately needed points and Tavon Smith, fighting “a bug” still held on for a 4th place finish.  Justin Paige, BJ Townley, Andrew Baerhe, and Brandon Price-Williams snared a second in the 4×100.

Baehre had a great day for the redbirds, placing in the 110 meter hurdles, the 300 meters hurdles, and the triple jump.  Williams singled him out for an exceptional effort Saturday. “Andrew is the example of a true team player; today it meant giving up the opportunity to place higher in his best event, he took on the events where we needed him today.  There was never a question or objection from him.”

Versatile BJ Townley took the team on his shoulders and delivered one of his best efforts in his Ireton career.  After a third place finish in the high jump and long jump, he came back to win 110 meter high hurdles, turned right around and won the 400 meters, then skipped his signature 300 hurdle event to replace the injured Webb on the 4×100 relay.  Finally, with Ireton desperate for team points, Townley entered the last try in the triple jump event. With a personal best 41’8″ in his resume, he would need a 42′ jump to win the event on his last attempt.  Ever the competitor, Townley secured the meet’s boys’ MVP, and a first place in the event, with a School record leap of 43′ 5.75″.

Ireton’s girls earned a third place finish with a mix of great performances from their youngest, least experienced runners as well as their best runners.  The 4×800 relay team of Cammille Merai, Karen Gusmer, Grace Hamilton, and Megan Reilly gained  a 4th place, the 4×100 team of Amanda Callabero, Lizzie Spooner, Madeline Fortier, Christina Grant, earned a 5th place finish.  London Duckett tossed the discus for a 6th place finish while Gusmer had a 6ht place in the 800 meters.  Senior Anna Wissler looked to be returning to form with a 5th in the 800 while Reilly was 4th in the 1600. Kaitlyn McNutt finished 5th in the 300 meter hurdles and 6th in the 100 hurdles.

Junior Nicole Bond, a workhorse sprinter, didn’t disappoint either with a win in the 100 meter dash, a second in the 400, and third in the 200.  Sophomore Ricca Graham won both the 200 and 400 meter dashes as well as a 4th place finish in the long jump.

The Cardinals hope to heal quickly as their most challenging meet of the season looms this weekend with the WCAC championships at Good Counsel High School on Friday and Saturday.
