Girls lacrosse goes 2-1in busy week of action

Ireton's Olivia Cole had 8 saves in the Cardinals 12-9 setback to Milton Georgia on Lax DayVIII Saturday.

It was a week of endurance April 24-28 for the BI Women’s Lacrosse Team with three games in six days. The team came away with two decisive victories over the St. Mary’s Ryken Knights and the Bishop McNamara Mustangs in WCAC action but ended the week suffering a disappointingly close loss against the visiting team from defending Georgia state champion, Milton High School.

Tuesday, April 24th the Cardinals ran over the St Mary’s Ryken by a final score of 19-5.  At halftime the Cardinals led 13-3 with Maddie Zeigler having scored three times, Gabby Barowski, Sadaf Najafzadeh, and Ellie Marrin each scoring twice.  Kelly Mathews, Charlotte Sofield, Kendall Cunningham, and Kathryn Gasper each contributed one more point to the board.

The Cardinals played a conservative style in the second half with Maddie Zeigler scoring an additional two goals while Ellie Marrin, Sadaf Najafzadeh, Ciane Puglise, and Mackenzie Whalon finishing out the game with a goal each.

Friday, April 28th Bishop Ireton traveled across the Potomac River to face off against the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara.  The Mustangs were overwhelmed by Cardinals in a shut-out victory of 17-0.  It was a day for the offense as Ireton brought home 17 goals out of an attempted 27 shots.  The Cardinals’ defense gave goalie Olivia Cole the day off as she point-blank stuffed the one shot she faced the entire game. So dominating was the Ireton play that the Mustangs never made it to the Cardinals’ end of the field the last 15 minutes of the game. Maddie Zeigler and Kelly Mathews both had a good day with four goals and one assist each.  Kendall Cunningham scored twice and Aubrey Gartlan, Charlotte Sofield, Eva Irwin, Kathryn Gasper, Christine Macey, Natalie Irwin, and Margaret Nealon each scored once.

Saturday, April 28th was a big day for Ireton as the Cardinals hosted the 2012 Bishop Ireton LAX Day VIII.  Starting off in the early morning hours with a two-hour clinic for up and coming girls stars, the balance of most of the day consisted of a series of Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League girls games ranging from the 3rd to 8th grade levels. The feature of the day was the Cardinals (ranked 148th) facing off against the nationally ranked (95th) Milton Georgia team.  (Nearly 2400 girls varsity teams are ranked by LaxPower)

The scouting reports proved to be on target as Milton roared back from a 3-goal halftime deficit to prevail, 12-9.  Initially in the first half, Ireton came on strong with Aubrey Gartlan placing the first score on the board six and a half minutes into the game.  Scoring against the talented Milton goalie, Lauren Ragsdale, did not prove easy but Maddie Zeigler scored ten minutes later with an assist from Megan Fyffe.  Margaret Nealon, Charlotte Sofield (assisted by Maddie Zeigler) and Maddie Zeigler followed with a goal each finishing off the first half with the Cardinals clinging to a 5-2 advantage.

Milton stole the momentum early in the second half.  The visitors pressed the Cardinals early and Ireton’s Olivia Cole made 4 big saves in the first  five minutes, although Paige Winsness and Amanda Lockwood found the back of the net within the half’s first 5 minutes. Following an Ireton timeout, Kelly Mathews gave the Cardinals some relief to push the lead back to 6-4, but Lydia Casssada responded with one her game high 4 goals at 15:31 to tie the contest after Mackenzie, Iech, had pulled Milton back to within a goal.  45 seconds later Cassada gave Milton its first lead, one they would not relinquish at 7-6.

The Cardinals traded goals with the Georgia school but couldn’t close the gap as the game wore on and Milton gradually opened a 10-7 bulge with 3 minutes to play.  Zeigler scored to get Ireton within 10-8 at the 2:24 mark, but Milton’s Annie Ruland and Cassada would answer in the game’s final 100 seconds while Charlotte Sofield ended the day’s scoring with :28 seconds remaining for a 12-9 final count.

The redbirds dominated the groundballs on the day by a 26-14 margin and held 13-10 advantage in draw controls. The home team actually outshot the visiting Georgians 23-21, but Milton stepped up with 14 shots in the second period, doubling their first half output. In contrast, Ireton had 13 shots in the first half, but mustered only 10 in the final period of play. Milton committed 14 turnovers on the afternoon to Ireton’s 11 and both goal keepers record 8 saves for the day.

Bishop Ireton will finish the regular season this week at Elizabeth Seton on Tuesday and by hosting Flint Hill on Friday.  WCAC tournament play opens Monday, May 7th with play-in games, semifinals commence on Tuesday, May 8th.  Sitting in the third seed currently, the Cardinals look to host the WCAC’s 6th seeded team on Fannon Field. A win would likely send them to face the second seeded Tartans of Holy Cross on Thursday in Kensington.  The winner there will likely get 7 time champion, Good Counsel on Monday, May 14th at the University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field. Championship game is slanted for 5pm and admission is $10.  State playoffs begin May 15th, and the third seeded Cardinals will likely be back at home for a first round contest in the VISAA tournament.

Boys Earn Win in Senior Day Lax 8-4

Senior co-captain Joe Darville was one of 12 players recognized before the Senior Day game with Bishop McNamara Friday.

On a day when the Cardinals bid farewell to a dozen seniors, co-captain Brandon Attilliis scored three goals to lead Bishop Ireton to an 8-4 Senior Day win over Bishop McNamara in WCAC action Friday.

A beautiful sun-drenched afternoon with temperatures in the mid 60’s was a perfect backdrop for a physical effort by the home team intent on sending their seniors home with a win.  Junior William Chastain added a pair of goals, Alex Carpenter, Joe Darville, and Phillip Thomas added one each.

The defense was strong, causing 15 Mustang turnovers on the afternoon, led by senior Max Becker, credited with 4. Albert Schibani cleaned up a team-high 3 ground balls of 8 the Cardinals snared  on the day.

The redbirds opened a 3-0 first quarter lead and pushed the advantage to 5-1 by the intermission.  The Mustangs tightened their play in the second half, holding Ireton to a single goal in the third quarter, then the visitors exploded for 3 goals, two from Dominic Pagliaro, in the final quarter to narrow the gap.  Ireton gave the Mustangs a number of opportunities to narrow the game, taking a season high 10 penalties, but McNamara could score on only one of the man-advantage opportunities.

Ireton outshot the visitors 18 – 12, Ryan Baier making 8 saves for the Cardinals while Romyel Santos had 10 saves for Bishop McNamara.

The Cardinals travel to the tidewater area to take on Cape Henry Collegiate to wrap up this busy week of lacrosse, then host DeMatha on Tuesday.  WCAC tournament action begins Monday May 7th, with quarterfinals the 8th, semi’s on the 10th and the 2012 WCAC championship games on Monday, May 14th at the University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field.  Admission to the championship is $10.

Cardinals Top St Stephens in 10 Innings, 7-6

A Susie Rhodes walk off triple in the bottom of the 10th inning pushed Ireton over the top in its 7-6 extra innings win against cross town rival St. Stephens/St. Agnes on Tuesday afternoon.  Senior Micki Crouch pitched her best game of the season and the entire Cardinal defense played superbly as the team extended their winning streak to 4 games.

Aggressive base running put the Cardinals on top 3-0 in the first inning.  Katie Kiesner, after being hit by a pitch worked her way to third on consecutive steals.  Heather Pearson drew a walk and Senior Debbie Ward delivered a hard hit triple to drive them home.  Susie Rhodes then reached on an error plating Ward to give Ireton the early lead.

Good defense and solid pitching kept the score locked at 3-0 until the 5th when SSSA took the lead on a double and a 3 run home run by University of Pennsylvania recruit Alexis Sargent.  Ireton tied the score in the 6th as Debbie Ward collected her second of three hits on the day and was driven home when Emily Quinn’s long fly ball to left field was dropped.

In the 7th inning, SSSA again scored two runs on a single and a pair of doubles to take a 6-4 lead.  Down to their last at bats, Ireton rallied again to overcome the deficit. Consecutive singles by Micki Crouch, Katie Kiesner, Heather Pearson and Debbie Ward tied the game at 6.  With the score tied, the Cardinals pressured the SSSA defense by sending the winning run home only to be gunned down at the plate by a superb defensive play.

Again, excellent defense and pitching kept the teams locked at 6 until the bottom of the 10th inning.  Debbie Ward worked her count into a walk and took second on a passed ball.  With two strikes, sophomore Susie Rhodes hammered a line drive to left center field allowing Ward to sprint home with  the
game winning run.

“The kids showed a lot of character and did not quit after falling behind twice,” commented head coach Terri Pearson.  “It took the whole team to earn our biggest win of the season.”

The Cardinals go right back to work on Wednesday when they travel to take on WCAC opponent Elizabeth Seton.

The Cardinals traveled to Dumfries on Friday to face the John Paul the Great Wolves.

Tartans start fast, hold on late for 12-10 lax win

Senior Eva Irwin, above, anchored a strong second half defensive effort at Holy Cross, but the Tartans held on for a 12-10 win

Bishop Ireton traveled to Kensington this past Wednesday afternoon to take on the always tough Tartans from the Academy of the Holy Cross. The Cardinals started out very slowly in the first half of a rain-soaked game, scoring only three times to Holy Cross’ nine. The women came alive the second half of the game scoring seven times while the defense kept Holy Cross from scoring any more than three additional goals.  Three proved be the difference, however, as the Cardinals couldn’t overcome the sluggish start and the contest ended 12-10.

Maddie Zeigler and Charlotte Sofield each came away with three goals on their cards, Kendall Cunningham had two, and Margaret Nealon and Kelly Mathews each scored once.  Zeigler, Eva Irwin, Megan Fyffe, Mathews, and  Sofield were each credited with an assist.

With only two weeks left of regular play, Ireton (8-5, 3-2) needs a pair of wins in their final 5 games to complete the season on a winning note facing off at home against St. Mary Ryken on the 24th, traveling to Bishop McNamara on the 27th, facing nationally ranked Milton (Georgia) on the 28th for the 8th annual Lax Day at Fannon Field, going to Elizabeth Seton on May 1st and the final game of the regular season at home versus Flint Hill on May 4th. Softball has successful Easter vacation, winning 3 of 4

Sophomore Susie Rhodes returned from a thumb injury to power the Cardinal hitters in South Carolina.

The Cardinal Softball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, over spring break winning two of three games against teams from New York and Tennessee.  The road trip allowed the squad to stay sharp over the break and sharpen their skills for the second half of WCAC play.

Monday saw the team face off against Pigeon Forge High School who traveled from Tennessee for the tournament.  Meghan Sullivan and Heather Pearson led the attack, both going 3 for 4 and driving in runs.  Katie Kiesner also swung a timely bat, collecting 2 RBI’s.  The game featured the return of Sophomore stand out Susie Rhodes who had been sidelined for 3 weeks while recovering a broken finger.  She showed no loss in power, hammering out a pair of triples and scoring 3 times. Senior Micki Crouch kept the opponent bats in check, striking out seven on the way to a 9-1 Ireton victory.

An 8 AM game on Tuesday found the Cardinals a bit slow as they were overrun by an aggressive Corning, New York team 10-0.  Megan Sullivan collected the only hit of the day for the squad and the lopsided score allowed Coach Pearson to get all her players into the game including all three of her pitchers.

After some extra batting practice and some beach time, the Ireton team rebounded early Wednesday morning turning the tables on a Newark, New York team 12-1.  Freshman Katie Reilly made her first start of the season as the designated hitter and scored a run.  Heather Pearson and Susie Rhodes drove in 5 runs each while Micki Crouch went 3 for 4 at the plate and struck out 4.  Senior Debbie Ward got to the plate 4 times and scores 4 times.

“It was a great trip for the girls,” commented Head Coach Terri Pearson. “We to see some different teams, catch some beach time and come closer together as a team.”  The team returned to Alexandria with hot bats as evidenced by the 20-14 slugfest the squad participated in at St Mary’s Ryken on Monday to return to WCAC play.

Girls Lax win over ESPN’s 12th ranked team highlights 2-0 run over break

Kelly Mathews three goals paced Ireton in the upset of nationally ranked Loyola Academy Friday at Georgetown University.

There was no break for Bishop Ireton women’s lacrosse this spring as the Cardinals paired off twice Easter Week;  first taking  on the Saints from Saint Anne’s Belfield, of Charlottesville, Virginia, on Tuesday and then squaring off against Loyola Academy of Wimette, Illinios, on Friday.

The Cardinals took an early commanding lead over the Saints but that was whittled down in the second half, in part due to yellow cards and the resulting absence from the field of some key Ireton players. In the end, Ireton survived as the ladies came away with a 15- 12 victory.

Kelly Matthews led the way with four goals and two assists. Both Ellie Marrin and Charlotte Sofield contributed three goals and one assist each.  With two goals of her own, Maddie Zeigler assisted other girls making the mark seven times while Eva Irwin, Kendall Cunningham and Megan Fyffe each left the field with one goal each. In the end, the game would not have been carried were it not for the amazing performance of Olivia Cole with a game total of 18 saves.

On Friday, a pressing full-field defense in the second half sealed the 12-10 win for the Cardinals against the Ramblers.  Dropped passes plagued BI during the game but they were patient and did make excellent passes to players cutting close to the top of the crease. The defending Illinois state champion Ramblers had been ranked last week by ESPN’s FAB 50 poll as #12 in the country and by Inside Lacrosse as #15.

The Cardinals (8-4, 3-1) travel to Holy Cross this Wednesday, 4:00 p.m., for a key WCAC clash. Other upcoming games include a Lax Day clash with a highly
regarded defending Georgia state champion from Milton on Saturday, April 28, 1:00 p.m., at Fannon Field.

News and Notes:

– The team’s big win against Loyola and Kendal Cunningham’s hat trick performance during this game got mentioned in ESPN’s FAB 50 Insider column under the “Girls FAB 50” section at http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/lacrosse/post/_/id/5200/fab-50-insider-landon-gets-back-on-track. Olivia Cole had 10 total saves including two crucial saves on free position shots late in the second half.

– As of Monday, April 16, according to the Washington Post’s All-Met Sports lacrosse top 50 statistics section, Maddie Zeigler is tied for 5th with 43 goals so far this season and is 3rd with 36 assists; Kelly Matthews is tied for 27th with 28 goals and tied for 48th with 11 assists; and Olivia Cole is 4th with 108 saves.
