Swim team shines at Catholic Nationals

Catherine Kennedy prepares to anchor a Cardinal relay while a "familiar supporter" looks on

The BISD team, is in the championship part of the season and the Bishop Ireton swimmers made a big impression this past weekend (Jan 28th and 29th) at the 2012 National Catholic High School Swimming Championships in Philadelphia.  The preliminary sessions were held on Saturday at Villanova University and the finals were held on Sunday at LaSalle University.  Many BI fans came out to support the team, as did our beloved BI Cardinal mascot!

The two top individual finishers for Bishop Ireton were senior Maddie Zeigler and Junior Kelly Palmer.  Zeigler finished fourth in the women’s 100 backstroke and Palmer finished 6th in the women’s 500 freestyle.  Zeigler also swan in the 100 freestyle finals where she placed 9th.  Palmer’s second individual event was the 200 freestyle, where she finished 11th.

Several other Cardinal swimmers earned individual points for the team with their fabulous  swims.  These include: Emi Quinn (12th in 200 IM and 10th in 100 Free), Kevin Grant (12th in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 free), Hayley Snell (12thin the 50 free), and Michael Ryan Clark (16thin the 50 free).

The Ireton relays were also excellent with  the boys relay team of Kevin Grant, Andrew Crandall, Ben Gorski and Michael Ryan Clark taking 5th place in both the men’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays.  The girls relay team of Maddie Zeigler, Kelly Palmer, Hayley Snell and Emi Quinn took 7th place in both the 200 and 400 free relays.   The men’s 200 medley team of Jimmy Grant, Jimmy Fonda, Cory Conway and Kevin Abbed also swam in the finals and earned  15th place.  Margaret Gray, Alex Branham, Eileen Louison and Catherine Kennedy formed the  BI women’s 200 medley relay team which swum in the finals and took 14th place.

Twenty seven swimmers made the BI National Team.  Those not mentioned above, but who still made very significant contributions to the team were:  Tommy Corridon, Jimmy Grant, Rob Mejia, Vince Mule’, Kaitlin Nguyen, Tommy Reichelt, Kaileen Rouin, Giovanni Salvatori, Juliana Sampaio, Maddie Sanasack and Carl Smearman.
Swimming Notes:

– Junior Kelly Palmer, was recently named an Alexandria Sportsman’s Club Athlete of the Month for December.  She accepted her award at the January Sportsman’s Club meeting.  Kelly is primarily a mid and long distance freestyler and is a three time City of Alexandria Champion in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

– The team is now preparing for three more championship meets:  the  WMPSSDL League  Champs, Metros, and States (VSIS) in the next three weeks.  Unlike National Catholics, each of these upcoming meets will also include diving.

Lions Pull Away for 70-57 Win in Girls Hoops

Junior Camille Weber, guard, is in her third season as a varsity player for the Cardinals. She chipped in 6 points Friday.

Archbishop Carroll (13-6, 6-3) survived Bishop Ireton’s best shots in the closing moments of the second and fourth periods to pick up their sixth conference win of the year in a 70-57 contest in Alexandria Friday.   Carroll jumped out to a 17-8 advantage after one period, streaking away from a 5-3 early lead with a 12-3 run.  But Ireton responded in the second quarter with a 10-4 run of their own to close the gap to 28-24 with 2 minutes to play in the first half. The Lions held a 36-30 advantage at the intermission.

Senior Jasmine Conkright sparked the redbirds early in the game, with energy on the defensive side of the court as well as 6 points on the evening. As is often the case, when Mara Celis warmed up in the second quarter  her offense brought life to the Cardinals as they narrowed the margin. The junior guard ended the contest with a team-high 17 points, including the club’s only three-pointer on the evening.

Again, however, the turnover bug bit Ireton again during the ballgame, periods where the Cardinals hit a dry spell.  With Carroll shooting well from the field, including five 3-pointers, the home team would see minutes of hard work to close the deficit quickly evaporate when the Lion’s converted turnovers to easy baskets. The third quarter saw the visitors take a six point halftime advantage and blow it up to an 11 point lead in the first 1:03 to open the third quarter. The green and gold  headed into the final period with a 61-45 bulge.

Bishop Ireton caught fire again in the final stanza with 10-3 spurt that cut the lead to 9 with more than 5 minutes remaining and down to 64-57 with 2:37 to play.  Unfortunately, Carroll would tally the final 6 points of the evening and send Ireton to its 10th WCAC setback and 16th overall. Rima Lghzaoui contributed 8 points for the Cardinals, senior Laura Hart added 7, Julia Weber and Camille Weber each scored 6 for Ireton.

Free throw shooting was  a difference in the game as well, Ireton could manage but 16 of 31 from the charity stripe while Archbishop Carroll drained 27 0f 37. That was a big factor, for the home team scored 20 field goals to 19 for Carroll, so even with the added three pointers, the 11 extra points from the free throw line were the critical to the Lion’s win.

The Cardinals (5-16, 1-10) have a tough week ahead as the WCAC’s top two squads are next up. The Cadets of St Johns will visit on Tuesday before Ireton travels to Good Counsel for their final meeting of the regular season in Olney.

Cardinals Fall on the Road to Archbishop Carroll 63-52

Junior Louie Khouri is having a breakout season for the Cardinals, one of many new faces for Bishop Ireton

Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals were battling for three quarters at Archbishop Carroll before a dry spell and 19 turnovers finally did them in in the game’s final quarter, 63-52 in Washington, DC Friday night.

The visiting Cardinals nursed a 3 point lead to the locker room at half time and pushed the advantage to 8 points in the final minute of the third period.  But the Lions responded with a 14-0 run over the next 5:16 seconds to pull away for their 11th win of the season and fifth on the WCAC campaign.

Ireton shot just under 41% for the game and gave up an 11-5 advantage to the home team on the offensive glass which opened the door for Carroll, who shot just over 46% from the field.  Nonetheless, the contest was knotted with 4 minutes remaining before the Lions broke the game open from the free throw line. Though Carroll managed only 13 of 23 from the charity stripe, Ireton had only 11 opportunities all evening, converting on but 6 of them.

Nine Cardinals scored for Coach Neil Berkman, with Da’von Wiley leading the way with 12. Khouri pitched in 9, Dan Noe 7, while Taylor McHugh, Ty Quarles, and Malcolm Westbrook all had 6 for Ireton.  Alston and Williams each had 19 points to lead all scorers for Carroll.

The Cardinals, (10-10, 2-8) fall to .500 on the season and head back on the road Tuesday for a rematch with St Johns. The Cadets hung a 20-point stinger of the Cardinals just before Christmas and claimed their 6th conference win Friday over O’Connell.  Ireton will return to Godley Gym on Friday when Good Counsel (9-13, 3-9)makes their annual visit to Alexandria.  The game will be the third time this season the clubs have met. Ireton won the first meeting in overtime at the Benedictine Capital Classic tournament, then topped the Falcons in Ireton’s first WCAC win of the season in Olney in January.  It will be Wounded Warrior Night sponsored by the Beta Club with activities and halftime drawings to raise funds as well as awareness for our combat wounded service members.

Wrestlers surprise defending state champs enroute to sweep at Richmond Quad

Junior Nick Womack has been strong for the Cardinals during the 2011-12 season.

For private school wrestling fans in the mid Atlantic area, the news spread quickly and raised eyebrows,  Bishop Ireton beat St Christopher’s in a wrestling dual meet!  For the Cardinals, the 42-31 upset of the Saints was clearly the highlight of a strong day of wrestling in the Commonwealth’s capital city Tuesday.

The Alexandrians challenged host Collegiate School, Catholic rival, Benedictine, and the state’s annual powerhouse, St Christopher’s School, on January 24th.  It may have been a long drive down, but it was a great ride home for the victorious redbirds.

The Cardinals dispatached Collegiate School by a 50-25 count, on the strength of falls from Darcy Gomez (113),  Severini (132),  Womack (138),  Baehre (145),  Nagao (160),  Bladen (182),  and Lutterloh (220).   Gibson Hawk added a tech fall with a 16-1 win, and Jimmy Keegan won a 7-0 decision at 285.

The Cadets suffered a 51-21 setback to the Cardinals as well, Tommy Fessahaye winning a 7-2 decision to go with five falls for Ireton and three forfeits.  But, the clash of the evening was the traditional powerhouse Saints and the always tough northern Virginians.

Andrew Bladen scored a 7-3 decision to open the meet at 182, Tommy Fessahaye was edged 4-2 in overtime at 195.  Andrew Lutterloh, a favorite in his weight class to possibly claim a state title, delivered a fall in 4:47 over Hollerith to push Ireton back in front, 9-3.  Jimmy Keegan tipped the scales in Ireton’s favor with a pin at the 5:45 mark to up the lead to 15-3.

Conor Reilly was pinned at 106, but Darcy Gomez came back to gain a fall for the Cardinals at 113. Grabowski lost by a fall at 120 as the Saints closed the team score to 21-15.  In a quick but wild match, Chris Macey went from his back to pinning Fergusson in 1:40,  a possible swing of 12 points as the Cardinals went from possibly giving up 6 team points to tie the match to Macey pushing the Ireton lead to 11 at 26-15.

Jeff Severini suffered a loss by fall at 132, Nick Womack decisioned Cabell 11-4 at 138 before Andrew Baehre lost by fall at 145, St Chris rallying to 29-27.  Mike Rodriguez at 152 pinned Saunders in 4:58 to give Ireton some breathing room at 35-27, before the Saints’ Cornette decisioned senior Ben Nagao at 160 by a score of 14-5, setting up the thrilling finish.

With Gibson Hawk taking the mat at 170, the Cardinals clinging to a slim, 36-31 advantage, Hawk needed to avoid a pin to save the upset for Ireton.  The veteran Hawk soon removed any worry from Coach Don Dight’s squad as he ended the meet with a pin in 1:48 of the first period to push the final score to 42-31.

The Cardinals returned home pleased, but with little time to celebrate with senior night on Wednesday, hosting national powerhouse DeMatha and WCAC rival, Gonzaga, in Father Godley Gym in the final home appearance for the Cardinals’ senior grapplers.

Indoor Runners Peak as Season Winds Down

Junior Nicole Bond is poised after a strong indoor season to threaten sprint records in the coming outdoor season.

The Indoor track team is rounding out the end of the season as it approaches the states in two weeks.  The runners have performed well and are getting into the kind of track shape that sets them up for a great spring.  Last week the entire team was able to compete in the “Last Track to Philly”. at Georgetown Prep with over 500 athletes competed in this meet.

The boys 4×200 was run by Tavon Smith, Brandon Price, Albert Schibani, and Justin Paige.  They are now running 1:39 or better on a consistent basis.  Tavon, who ran 3 events this past weekend, came back to run another 200 meters in the sprint medley.  He was joined by freshman John Holbrook, senior Noah Brooksher, and Sophomore JP Ryan.   JP has turned into a solid middle distance runner after posting a time of 2:26 on his leg of the 800.

Brandon Price, Justin Paige, Albert Schibani, and Tavon Smith made up the foursome that competed for BI in our final race of the day.  Smith and Schibani turned in splits of 55 and 56, both respectable times for runners that are new to one of tracks most difficult races.

On the ladies side, Nicole Bond and Ricca Graham led the foursome that competed in two relays for the women’s relays.  They were joined by freshman Isela Vasquez, and freshman Lolo Hogue.  The girls competed in 4×200 and 4×400.  All four of the girls ran well and have improved tremendously during this past winter.  Bond and Graham had relay times of 63.2 and 64,6, which puts them well ahead of last spring.  Both Bond and Graham were part of a school record setting team that placed our 4×400 among the top groups in the WCAC at the conclusion of the 2011 outdoor season.

Panthers Claw Cardinals, 85-50

Senior Rima Lghzaoui, right, and Mara Celis, left, combined for 27 points in Cardinals' loss to PVI Friday night.

Just days after the exhileration of ending a WCAC skid dating back to February of 2008, PVI made sure there’d be no upset during their visit to Godley Gym Friday night racing to a 14-4 lead enroute to an 85-50 win.

No team has shot the basketball better in Godley Gym than the visitoring Panthers, raining in 32 field goals, including 10 three-point shots. 8 of those long bombs were by junior Marlena Tremba, who dropped a game-high 29 points on the Cardinals.  So overwhelming was the Fairfax school offensively, they bolted to a 30-8 lead after only one quarter.

Senior Rima Lghzaoui had her best scoring night of the season, pacing the Cardinals with 16 points 0n the evening, including the first ten points of the evening for the redbirds. Mara Celis added 11 and freshman Alexandra Stipano chipped in 7 mostly in the final quarter of the contest.

While PVI seemed to score at will, Ireton was plagued by more than 20 turnovers in the contest and found themselves so far behind so quickly that there appeared little they could do to climb back into the game. The Panthers headed to the locker room with a 47-18 lead at halftime. It grew to 68-29  before the Cardinals provided their most offense in the final period to close the game to the final tally.

Homestand over, the long futility ended in WCAC play with the O’Connell win, Ireton (5-14,1-8) heads on the road Tuesday to visit 18th ranked Holy Cross, then returns home Friday to host Archbishop Carroll in the schools first meeting of the season.  Both games will tip off at 7pm.

Weather grounds athletics Saturday

With the forecast of snow, sleet, and freezing rain from early Saturday morning, Bishop Ireton officials cancelled Saturday activities the the Alexandria school, including the Cardinals’ swim meet with Bullis and St Mary’s Ryken set for Leonardtown, the girls’ basketball team’s game at Archbishop Carroll, and the wrestlers’ participation in the Commonwealth Catholic wrestling championships at Benedictine.

“We met in midafternoon” explained the Ireton athletic director, Bill Simmons. “It was clear to us that the forecast, even if not exactly accurate, strongly suggested that travel could be dangerous, not only for our buses, but for families and students getting to Bishop Ireton as well. Certainly with early morning departures schedules, ice on sidewalks and streets would be an issue.”  Shortly after Ireton officials notified the event organizers of their decision, Fairfax County closed their facilities on Saturday.

While the swim meet was cancelled, the Richmond wrestling tournament was conducted for the teams from central and southern Virginia. Paul VI and Bishop O’Connell also cancelled their wrestling plans as well, though for the defending champions, it was a disappointing decision for the Ireton wrestling team.  Officials are studying a date to reschedule the girls’ basketball game at Archbishop Carroll, but the swim meet will not be rescheduled.

Ireton swimmers now look ahead to the Catholic Nationals at Villanova this coming weekend while the girls basketball team has a trip to Holy Cross on Tuesday, then host Carroll on Friday.  The wrestlers have busy week ahead with a trip to Benedictine on Tuesday for a quad, senior night Wednesday when Gonzaga and DeMatha visit Godley Gym.  The weekend sees the grapplers at Georgetown Prep on Saturday.

Indoor Track Club overcomes weather in Sunday competition

Junior Brandon Price-Williams takes on the best sprinters in the area during this indoor season.

The Bishop Ireton Indoor track team competed in it’s  6th meet of the season this past Sunday.  This year the team, made up of  fourteen veterans and newcomers, has competed in a variety of meets that range from the highly competitive Montgomery Invitational, to the more relaxed Prince Georges county all -comers meet.  Both meets were held at the prestigious Prince Georges County Sports and Learning Complex.  This six lane 200 meter indoor track has been home to the Nike Indoor nationals among other top level meets.

Sunday a number of Cardinal sprinters and middle distance runners competed at the facility, and posted very good times for this time of the year.  The boys team of Brandon Williams-Price, Albert Schibani, Tevon Smith,  Justin Paige, and Moses Webb, competed in the 55 meters, and 4 x 200 meter relay.  Because of the relaxed nature of this meet, Coach Mark Holmes put together a team of other area track athletes so that Tevon Smith could engage in a friendly challenge against his teammates.  The two teams battled to the finish with the BI maroon team winning by a lean.  The winning team consisted of Schibani, Paige, Webb, and Price.

This group of football and lax players has become quite formidable, and will compete together at  this weekends “Last Track to Philly” meet at Georgetown Prep.  The meet was given its name because it offers a number of the areas top relay teams a chance to qualify for the prestigious Penn Relays, in events that require qualifying times.  Freshman John Holbrook also competed in the 55 meters, and shows great promise in preparation for this year’s spring season

Our women’s team was made up of Camille Merai, a senior who is competing for the first time, and Isela Vasquez, a freshman who embodies the true Cardinal spirit at practice and at meets.  Camille was a member of our  4 x 200 relay that was led off by a member of Mclean High schools track team, a member of The Duke Ellington schools track team, and anchored by BI’s Nicole Bond, last years 100 meter bronze medalist at the WCAC Championships. Nicole also turned in yesterdays 2nd fastest time in the 55 meter dash.

The team has also been raising money at the mens varsity basketball games.  The money has helped to defray expenses and allowed all of the runners to receive new Bishop Ireton Indoor Track team t-shirts.  The club  appreciates your support of our team.

Cardinals top Don Bosco in Saturday matinee at Godley Gym, 69-57

Cardinals fell to WCAC rivals Bishop McNamara and O'Connell on the road, but won their home tilt with Don Bosco on a busy MLK weekend.

by Matt Krause

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals hosted Don Bosco Cristo Rey on Saturday afternoon in the final regular season non-conference game of the 2011-2012 season. While Ireton was expected to, and did, take the contest, the visiting Wolfpack put up a strong fight before falling, 69-57. The game got started about 25 minutes late due to the Don Bosco bus being delayed.

Once the action got started, Ireton jumped out to a 10-0 lead courtesy of Louis Khouri and Da’Von Wiley. The two junior guards would pace Ireton throughout the day. Once Don Bosco called timeout to settle in, the Emmanuel Omogbo show began. Omogbo, a 6′ 7″ junior forward, took the game and ran with it. Omogbo scored a whopping 34 of the Wolfpack’s 57 points. In addition, he snared 14 rebounds. Ireton tried many solutions to guard Omogbo, using a combination of Daniel Noe, Ty Quarles, and Robert Banez, but he could just not be stopped. As a result, Don Bosco hung in the game the entire way. It seemed that every time Ireton scored, Omogbo would either score or dish to one of his guards, such as Addison Pruitt, who scored 11 points. A bright spot for Ireton was Jamie Senft, who started at center, and scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. In the end, however, Ireton’s balanced game was too much for even Omogbo to handle.

Wrestlers go to 14-3 with flurry of dual wins over long weekend

Cardinal wrestlers were turning them over early and often in a busy weekend where they went 7-2 in team dual meets.

Like many teams this time of year, Coach Don Dight’s wrestlers are battling injuries at one of the busiest times of the season. Nonetheless, what might have been a 9-0 weekend with a City and Capital Duals championships still resulted in a very respectable 7-2 outcome and a pair of runner up finishes.

“I am very pleased with the way we wrestled considering we had to replace three wrestlers in our starting lineup.” said Ireton’s head coach. “Luis Hidalgo and Cullen Pointen, for example, gave us some strong matches and wrestled well when called upon to step into the starting lineup.”

The Cardinals opened the weekend with the Alexandria City Duals at Episcopal High School.  While Ireton upended the host team and TC Williams, the Saints of St Stephens edged the redbirds for the title.  The final tally looked this way:

Cardinals 40 TC Williams 37

Cardinals 51 Episcopal 18

Cardinals 36 SSSAS 45

At the Capital Duals Saturday at St Johns, the Cardinals continued to enjoy success in advancing to the championships with Baltimore’s Boys Latin.

Ireton 54 Sidwell Friends 27

Ireton 42 Bullis 39

Ireton 45  St. Mary’s Ryken 33

Ireton 33 Boys’ Latin 42

Capital Dual

Final Team Standings

Boy’s Latin (MD)4-0 – Team Champion

Bishop Ireton(VA) 3-1

St. Mary’s Ryken(MD) 2-2

St. John’s (DC) 3-1

Bullis (MD) 2-2

St. Anselm’s (DC)1-3

Sidwell Friends(DC) 2-2

Randolph Macon (VA)

Blue Ridge (VA)

Among the individual wrestlers that won all four matches  for the Cardinals on Saturday  were 138- Nick Womack, 182- Andrew Bladen, and at 220- Andrew Lutterloh. Lutterloh’s wins pushed his record on the year to 29-1 and helped earn him honors as the Athlete-of-the-Month from the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club.

The weary grapplers did have enough in the tank to finish the long weekend with a trip to Leonardtown where they again edged St Mary’s Ryken 45-33 but also drilled arch rival Bishop O’Connell 63-15 in the front half of the WCAC triangular meet.   Make your plans to attend senior night, when the Cardinals entertain Gonzaga at 5pm and follow with DeMatha in the back end of the triangular.
