Noe Jumper lifts Cardinals to 51-50 win over Woodrow Wilson

St John's visits Bishop Ireton Friday, Dec 23rd, 7:30pm tipoff

For the second in Dan Noe’s young career at Bishop Ireton the sophomore has propelled the Cardinals to a win with a late game bucket, this time at the expense of the DCIAA’s Woodrow Wilson Tigers (7-3), 51-50 in Godley Gym Tuesday.  The win sent Ireton to 5-2 on the season, 3-1 on the current 5-game home stand with St Johns visiting Friday.

The Washington, DC school came out in a tough man-to-man defense, stifling the Cardinals early, but Ireton played aggressive as well in the fast paced opening quarter, with turnovers and cold shooting afflicting both squads. Junior Louie Khouri hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the home team a narrow 6-5 advantage after one quarter.

Da’von Wiley, who led Ireton in scoring for the game, hit a three-pointer to tie the game in the second quarter at 13, Khouri gave the lead back to Ireton moments later with a jumper at 15-13 and the teams traded baskets on their way to a 19-17 Ireton advantage at intermission.

Wilson shot the ball much better in the second half and bolted out to a 5 point cushion throughout the third quarter behind the game’s leading scorer, the Tigers’ Dmitri Gaither with 16 through three quarters, though he would end the game with only 17,  including a stretch where Wilson made consecutive three-point shots.

The Tigers extended the lead to 47-42 in the final period of play before sophomore Patrick Moseh made a layup and converted the subsequent foul shot to pull Ireton within 50-47 with two minutes remaining.

A wild sequence of play under the Wilson basket eventually resulted in a turnover, Moseh was then fouled on a layup, his free throws narrowed the game to 50-49 with 1:04 left. Moseh rebounded a Tiger miss with :30 seconds remaining and Coach Neil Berkman spent a timeout to set the Cardinals’ final possession.

It felt like the clock was racing away and the Tiger defense was giving little margin to the Cardinals as they tested the perimeter.  But with time winding down, Dan Noe took a pass on the three-point arc and drove to the left of the free throw line and calmly dropped a jumper with :10 left to play.  Wilson regrouped with a timeout, but Gaither’s long jumper at the buzzer bounced off the rim and Ireton rebounded the miss to seal the win.

St John’s College High School(5-4, 0-1) makes their annual visit to Godley Gym for a tripleheader on Friday, Dec 23rd before the Cardinals take the Christmas, the squad goes back to work with a trip to Richmond up for the Cardinals. The Cadets dropped their opener to O’Connell 56-53 while the Cardinals fell 71-58 to Paul VI.

Bishop Ireton  will journey south  to Richmond on Dec 27th, where they square off with Germantown Academy from Pennsylvannia in the Diamond Springs 46th Benedictine Capital City Classic.  In addition, Good Counsel, St Albans, McDonough of Baltimore, Christchurch and Hanover joins the 8-team field on Dec 27-29.

Girls Soccer’s Katrina Guillou 1st Team allMet, team ranked 16th nationally

3-time all conference player Katrina Guillou selected to Washington Post's first-team, allMet squad

Bishop Ireton’s Katrina Guillou, a senior forward, has been selected to the Washington Post’s allMet first team for soccer.  The three-time  first-team all-WCAC selectee was the Cardinals’ leading goal scorer.  The Fort Washington, Maryland native is likely headed to UNC-Wilmington next fall.

Teammate Helena Barber joined Guillou on the girls list as an honorable mention. The defender was key member of the defense that shut down opponents, including the Good Counsel Falcons in the semi finals of the WCAC tournament, as well as containing St Johns in the championship, where only corner kick found its way in the goal and the Cadets were held to fewer than 10 shots on net.

The third Ireton senior recognized was defender, Nick Galdos from the boys soccer team. While the team enjoyed fewer successes on the scoreboard than the girls, Galdos steered the efforts of the Cardinals on the field for Coach Jon Norem. Galdos did double duty for Ireton as a placekicker on the varsity football team as well.

The Cardinal girls soccer team, at 12-3-1, finished strong in the fall season, upending undefeated Good Counsel in the WCAC semifinals in Olney. The Falcons were the top ranked team by not only the Washington Post but ESPN Rise, the high school publication by the network, ranked Good Counsel as the country’s best girls’ team.

Although Ireton was upended 1-0 in the championships by St Johns, the Post selected Ireton as their #4 team in their final poll while ESPN lined up St Johns #15, the Cardinals #16, Good Counsel #17, and McDonough School of Baltimore, another area powerhouse, #18.

Late Cardinal comeback nets 1st point in hockey campaign

The Ireton Varsity hockey team continued its NVSHL schedule last week with a pair of games.  The Cardinal home opener took place Monday night and featured a visit from division foe Dominion High School.  Missing 2 starters but buoyed by the home crowd at Mt. Vernon Rec Center, the Cardinals struck early with 3 goals in the first five minutes of the game.  Duke Roach started the scoring, tipping in a nice cross-ice feed from Nick Tangora.  Just over a minute later, Stephen Gerke chipped in his 2nd goal of the season, with assists from linemates Tangora and Ryan Scott.  The Titans cut the lead to 2-1 before Ryan Scott restored the 2-goal lead with his first of the season, tucking in a backhand at the tail end of a 2 on 1 with Nick Tangora.  Gerke would pick up his 3rd of the season unassisted just before the end of the period, but not before Dominion had reeled off 4 unanswered goals in between to storm to a 5-3 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.

The Ireton offense would manage just 2 more goals on this night, both in the second period.  Dominion struck first in the middle frame, scoring 2 quick goals and extending their lead to 7-4.  The Cardinals would close the gap briefly, getting to within a goal at 7-6 on tallies from Nick Tangora and Jimmy Smith.  Tangora picked up his 3rd of the season on assists from Stephen Gerke and Ben Gerke, and Smith his 1st with an assist from Duke Roach.  The rest of the game belonged to the Titans who reeled off 9 unanswered goals to cruise to a 16-6 victory.  Nick Tangora led the Cardinal scoring with 4 points (1 G, 3 A), followed by Stephen Gerke with 3 points (2 G, 1 A), Duke Roach and Ryan Scott with 2 (1 G, 1 A), and Jimmy Smith and Ben Gerke each with 1.

Friday night saw the Cardinals travel to Skatequest Reston to face a combined squad from South Lakes/Parkview.  The Ireton squad was back at full strength for this late game, and their play reflected that.  The Cardinals and Seahawks traded chances for the first 10 minutes but neither squad was able to dent the twine.  The deadlock was finally broken by the South Lakes squad when penalty trouble did in the Cardinals who found themselves on the wrong end of a 5 on 3 penalty ****.  Before the period was over the Seahawks struck again, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.

The South Lakes crew would extend that lead to 3-0 early in the second period, thwarting several good Cardinal scoring chances along the way.  The tide began to turn as the period wore on, however, with the Cardinal offense pressing.  Finally, with just over 2 minutes remaining in the period, Ryan Scott notched his 2nd goal of the season, slamming in a rebound of a Nick Tangora shot and cutting the deficit to 3-1.  The score would remain that way for almost a full period, but the Ireton squad was far from done.

The Cardinals continued to carry the play in the 3rd and had the Seahawks back on their heels.  Despite the increased pressure, the score remained 3-1 late in the period.  With just under 2 minutes left in the game, their persistence finally paid off.  A shot by Duke Roach was stopped by the Seahawk goalie but the rebound popped out front to Phillip Thomas in the high slot.  Thomas made no mistake, notching his 1st of the season and bringing the Cardinals within a goal.  After a Seahawk timeout, and with a faceoff deep in the South Lakes zone, the Cardinals pulled goalie Jack Rodgers for an extra attacker.  With traffic in front of the net, Will Chastain launched a shot from the point that found its’ way past the screened South Lakes goalie and ignited a celebration from the Cardinal faithful in the stands.  Chastain’s goal, his 1st of the season, was the second tally in 14 seconds for the team and knotted the score at 3-3.  The game would end that way and allow the Cardinals to claim their 1st standings point of the season.  The scorers were led by Nick Tangora with 2 points, both assists, and 1 point each by Ryan Scott, Phillip Thomas, Duke Roach, Will Chastain, and Dillon Roach.  Jack Rodgers was solid in net for the Cardinals, earning the tie.

The Ireton team resumes play on Friday, January 6, with a 7:00 pm tilt against the Woodbridge Vikings at Mt. Vernon Rec. Center.

State Awards Recognize Cardinals’ Stellar Season

Seniors Malcolm Westbrook (7) and Moses Webb (24) were two of three Cardinals named first team, all state

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals success on the football field this past fall was recognized by the Virginia Independent Schools Football Association coaches who conferred all state honors on ten Cardinal players as well as their head coach, Tony Verducci.  Verducci, who became Bishop Ireton’s school leader in football victories this fall, noted that, “I am proud of and pleased for our players and the respect they earned from our fellow VISFA teams.  The Coach of the Year award truly reflects the superb coaching and training staff we have at Bishop Ireton.”

Senior wide receivers Malcolm Westbrook and Moses Webb, named co-MVPs earlier this month, once again shared top billing as a first team all state players.  For Westbrook, this was a repeat honor, one that reflected his big play ability.  He ended the season with 45 receptions, averaging more than 18 yards per catch and eight touchdowns; despite the fact he missed most of three games with an ankle injury.  Coach Verducci explained that, “Malcolm is a very complete wide receiver; he catches the ball exceptionally well, catches the ball anywhere on the field, blocks, and can run over or away from defenders.”

Webb was the Cardinals prolific scorer, finding the end zone sixteen times on the ground and through the air. “Offensive Coordinator Joe Blaszkow did a great job of lining Moses up all over the field, forcing defenses to find him because Moses was a threat to make a big play every time he handed the ball,” said Verducci.  Handle the ball he did, Webb carried the ball 57 times for an average of more than 6 yards per play and he caught 33 passes for an average of more than 14 yards per play.  Like Westbrook, Moses’ was denied a full season when he broke a bone in his lower leg during the Cardinals ninth game of the season.

The young men who stood out as best supporting players for the “W & W Show” had some time in the spotlight as well.  Senior center and offensive line leader Eddie D’Antuono was named first team all state for the second year in a row and, as Verducci noted, “Eddie made an even bigger impact on our program than he did on opposing linebackers.  His work ethic and commitment set very high standards for our returning linemen.”  One of those returning linemen, junior left tackle Jimmy Keegan, comes back as a second team all state player.

Running back Brandon Williams-Price, who averaged more than 8 yards per touch on his 122 carries and 38 receptions, will return to the offensive backfield with second team all state honors and his good friend and teammate, junior QB P.J. Zingler.  Zingler, an honorable mention player for the second straight year, had the best touchdown to interception ratio in the VISFA; tossing 20 scoring passes and only 4 “picks.”

The Cardinals defense was also honored with a pair of second team all state selections in lineman Andrew Lutterloh and linebacker Hudson Sullivan.  Lutterloh, a three year starter and senior leader, racked up 19 unassisted tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 6 quarterback sacks.  Big number 99 drew the constant attention of multiple opponent blockers, but still found ways to make plays.  Cardinal foes often found it impossible to run away from Lutterloh because they were left to face Hudson Sullivan.  All Hudson did as a first year starter was lead the defense in unassisted tackles, assisted tackles, total tackles, and sacks!

Ireton’s strong kicking game, which included long snapper D’Antuono, was given great respect by the VISFA coaches who named senior kicker Nick Galdos and punter Aurelien Guillaud as honorable mention all state players.

Verducci reflected on the awards by saying that, “I’m sure that each of those honored by the VISFA joins me in humbly receiving recognition on behalf of the players, coaches, training staff, and families who made our 2011 season a truly exceptional one.  We have a strong group of players who will return in 2012 and hope that more young men will accept the challenge to keep Bishop Ireton among the elite VISFA programs.”

Boys Ride High Octane offense to 111-66 win at home

Hard nosed Louie Khouri scored a season high 15 for the Cardinals in a 111-66 win.

Coach Neil Berkman suggested after the contest that he coached the offense and left it to an assistant to coach the defense, if so it was among his best efforts ever , as it was an offensive explosion Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals hammered the Guardians of Trinity Christian School 111-66.

The Cardinals could do little wrong in racing out to a 27-13 lead after a quarter and 63-32 advantage at halftime on the strength of a 36-point second quarter.  They continued the onslaught with a 27-point third quarter and cooled off with “only” 21 in the final stanza.

The Cardinals had six players in double figures and had two players out with injuries, sophomore Ty Quarles and senior Malcolm Westbrook. Senior Brandon Scales was taking ACT exams and didn’t enter the contest until late in the second half but still managed to chip in 12 points.  Tyler McHugh led the redbirds with 20, junior Da’von Wiley added 16, while Dan Noe and Louie Khouri each had 15.  Mark Noe scored 13 for Ireton and Jamie Senft added 8.   The game’s high scorer however , was Shaffer for TCS; he hung 29 on the home team and Bordell added 10 for the visitors.

The win was not a school record, though the final score sent people scurrying to the record book. The 1976-77 edition of Cardinal basketball featured hall of famers Paul Gartlan and Marvin Elliott. That squad pasted Broad Run 118-59 in 1977.

The Cardinals (4-1) find the road tougher in the coming week with nationally ranked Paul VI visiting Bishop Ireton Tuesday in a tripleheader, beginning at 4pm. The Cardinals entertain Woodrow Wilson on Friday and the Cadets of St Johns on the 23rd.

Cardinal Matmen snare 8th at Northern Region, Lutterloh claims title

Senior Andrew Lutterloh led Bishop Ireton to an 8th place finish with his championship win at 220 lbs. He had had two pins enroute to the title.

Senior Andrew Lutterloh edged Annandale’s Ali Musa 3-2 to lead Bishop Ireton to an 8th place finish at the 2011 Northern Region wrestling tournament, once again leading all private schools in the 32-team mega-tourney at Fairfax High School Friday and Saturday. Fauquier High School dominated the field to win the event with 226 points, Annandale was a distance second with 117.5.

Junior Nick Womack claimed a 4th place finish while Darcy Gomez earned a 5th place with a triple overtime pin, and Mike Rodriguez and Andrew Bladen garnered 6th place finishes for the Cardinals.

Lutterloh wrestled a masterful match in the championship.  The two dueled through a scoreless first two periods, Musa scored a reversal 2 points in the final two-minute session to grab a 2-0 lead. Undeterred, the 4th year varsity wrestler for Ireton, escaped for a point, then  stalked his opponent, watching the clock, waiting for an opportunity. When the moment came, Lutterloh went to one of his signature takedowns, a lateral toss, and scored a takedown with only 9 seconds remaining in the match.  Those 9 seconds were among the longest in his athletic life, however, as Musa frantically tossed, turned, and bucked to escape the 220 pounder to gain the critical escape point to send the championship to overtime. The clock finally reached :00 with Lutterloh clinging to both ankles as the Annandale Atom fought to escape.   It marks the second year in a row the Cardinals have produced a Northern Region champion, 103 pound Elliot Mondragon claimed a Northern Region title in 2010.

The Cardinals, who edged PVI in the team standing by a mere two and a half points, head to Bishop McNamara on Monday for a WCAC triangular with the Mustangs and PVI’s Panthers. Wrestling begins at 5pm in Forestville. Saturday the Cardinals look to defend their Bishop Ireton Holiday Invitational title when nine squads invade Father George Godley Gym for a full day of wrestling. Preliminary rounds begin at 9am, expect the championships to begin approximately 5:30pm.  Admission to this event is $5/person for a full day of wrestling.

Ireton girls fall twice to top 20 teams in basketball

Senior Bianca Ojiegbe begins her final varsity season playing the post position for the Cardinals

Bishop Ireton’s injury-riddled varsity girls were bounced hard in back-to-back nights against a pair of Washington Post top 20 squads as Georgetown Visitation came to Godley Gym and walloped the Cardinals 78-36, then the Cadets hosted the redbirds for a 72-36 setback.

The senior-laden Cubs, led by senior Kate Gillespie’s 18 points broke out quickly to a 9-2 advantage and raced to a 27-8 first quarter lead. It ballooned to 41-11 at the halftime break enroute to a 78-36 final. Maddie Williams of Visitation scored her 1,000th career point as part her 16 points on the night in the second half, but it was otherwise a long night for the home club. Visitation pulled down 55 rebounds and dished 17 assists while the home team garnered 23 and 5 respectively.

The Cardinals were lead by sophomore Isabelle Kendall with 7 points and Mara Celis with 6. Helena Barber and Bianca Ojiebge each grabbed 4 boards, Kedall added three as did junior Camille Webber.

The Cardinals headed to Gallagher Gym on Thursday night and suffered a 72-36 setback to the Cadets. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 2-3, 0-1 in WCAC play,  on the young season with Paul VI the next stop on the extended road trip for Ireton.  The tripleheader in the Panther Athletic Center tips off at 4pm with freshmen basketball, 5:45 for the JV and 7:30 for the varsity.

Late Charge Sends Cardinals past John Paul the Great in OT, 65-56

by Matt Krause

2011-12 Cardinals varsity boys basketball team

Determination. Grit. Passion. Desire.

These are just a handful of adjectives that could be used to describe a wild game at Godley Gym on Wednesday night in Bishop Ireton’s 2011-2012 men’s varsity basketball home opener against the Wolves of Pope John Paul the Great, a 65-56 overtime win.

Year 3 of the Neil Berkman era already  underway, the Cardinals came home to a raucous crowd in Godley Gym. The game was a seesaw affair from the get go, with Ireton scoring first off of a Mark Noe layup. While Ireton scored often in the first quarter of play, John Paul hung in there as the quarter ended 15-13 in favor of the Cardinals. The second period of game action was more in favor of John Paul. Ireton failed to score in the first three minutes of the second. When the halftime horn did sound, the score was a dead heat at 23. Ireton led in the assist, steal, and block category at the break, and Taylor McHugh led the way with six points. After intermission, Pope John Paul came out on fire, taking a 39-34 advantage over an Ireton team that struggled to keep up. John Paul built their lead up to 51-44 with 3 1/2 minutes left. In a timeout, Coach Berkman showed his displeasure with the squad, and a lightbulb was lit. Ireton first cut into the defecit with a clutch three from Da’Von Wiley, followed by a Wiley drive along with an “and 1” foul. John Paul added another bucket and the Cardinals trailed by three. With under a minute to play, Daniel Noe was fouled and sunk two free throws. John Paul proceeded to turn the ball over at their end of the court, and Ireton was in business. Da’Von Wiley sunk a free throw to tie the contest, and we were overtime bound in Godley Gym. The extra session was all Ireton, as the Wolves were without a key player in Desmond Robinson, who fouled out. Ireton made several easy layups, and cruised to a 65-56 win, after which, the fans stormed the floor.

Cardinals return to action on Saturday with a 11am JV start and 12:45 varsity tipoff with Trinity Christian School.  As a “Christmas present” to Cardinal fans, no admission will be charged to this non conference event!  Enjoy the game and buy your Christmas tree from the crew team tree sale!
