Panthers Claw Cardinals for Second Week in a row, 14-6

The sun wasn't shining on the Cardinals Saturday in their 14-6 loss to Potomac School.

Bishop Ireton’s high flying Cardinals were stopped for the second week in a row by the Panthers, this time the Potomac School Panthers, 14-6, on a miserable day in more ways than one.

The game, played in challenging conditions with rain, sleet, and snow mixed with a strong northwesterly wind, played havoc with the passing game for both teams.  The squads were nursing injuries, the Panthers dressed but 29 players, and key players were sidelined during the game, it became a “trench war” with both squads generally finding little running room for their ground attack.  The difference was a consistently strong rush defense by Potomac School.

Not surprisingly the game opened with both teams struggling to establish any offensive consistency, but Ireton, with the wind at its back seemed to tilt the field position battle in its favor early. That gave Ireton excellent field positon in the first half, when a punt into the wind carried only to the Potomac 20. Later, after the Panther defense once again stonewalled the Cardinals, a turnover gave Ireton great field position on the Potomac 15 year line, but Ireton could do nothing with the advantage because of the Panther run defense.

After a scoreless first period, the Panthers did take advantage of the wind in the second quarter and as their defense put them in good field position,  Brandon Arvanaghi punching Potomac into the end zone with only :33 seconds left in the first half. Bishop Ireton tried to generate some life with the time remaining, but on the final play of the first half PJ Zingler overthrew Merid Merid and the Panther’s Cullen Hamilton intercepted the ball and galloped nearly 55 yards untouched for their second touchdown in little more than a minute, giving the hosts a 14-0 lead at the half.

Little changed in the second half as the wind and weather made it a difficult day for both offenses. It was a punt from deep in Potomac territory in the third quarter that gave Ireton its only score of the day. When the wind caught a Ryan Eckert punt from inside their own 20, the aerial began to blow back, bounced on the turf and rolled out of bounds for the surprised teams at the Potomac 1-yard line. The Cardinals needed only one play, but with second effort, Andrew Bladen’s quarterback sneak pulled the Cardinals back to within a score. The PAT snap from center appeared to go through the hands of holder PJ Zingler and the surprised Nick Galdos could do nothing with the kick.

The second straight loss left Ireton at 7-2 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 6-2 0n the season with a date next week to play Flint Hill for the conference championship.   Ireton limps into Leonardtown with a Friday night game with the Knights left on the docket before any playoff opportunities the following weekend.

Scoring Summary:          1          2          3          4          Total

Bishop Ireton                   0         0         6           0              6

Potomac School               0       14          0          0           14

Potomac –  Arvanaghi 7 yard run (Eckert kick)

Potomac – Hamilton 55 yard pass interception return (Eckert kick)

Bishop Ireton – Bladen 1 yard run (run failed)

News & Notes:

– Potomac School’s win over the Cardinals was the first in the series, now standing at 5-1 in favor of Ireton

– 6 was the fewest amount of points scored by the Cardinals since they were shutout by Woodberry Forest 9/18/2010.

– Next Friday’s opponent, St Mary’s Ryken, fell 49-6 at PVI

– VISAA’s #3 ranked team, St Christophers fell to Woodberry Forest and Benedictine also lost to Fork Union. LCA & Flint Hill were winners

– SMR contest will be under the lights at 7pm in Leonardtown on Friday.

Cardinals open preseason ice hockey with 4-4 draw

Preseason is underway for 2011-12 ice hockey Cardinals. Ireton tied Archbishop Spalding 4-4 Friday night.

The BI Varsity Ice Hockey team opened their 2011-12 season last Friday night with a pre-season scrimmage against Archbishop Spalding.  The Cavaliers brought a mixed squad all the way from Severn, MD, for the 7:00 pm tilt at the Mt. Vernon Rec Center.  A great home crowd saw an entertaining game end in a 4-4 tie, after the contest was called with a little over a minute left due to an injury sustained by the Spalding goalie.

After a tentative start on both sides, BI opened the scoring late in the 1st period on a goal from Dillon Roach, the captain of this year’s squad.  Assists on the Roach goal went to Sam Ratner and William Chastain.  Less than a minute later Chastain netted one of his own, taking a pass from Stephen Gerke and rifling a shot past the screened Cavalier goalie.  The Ireton squad increased the lead to 3-0 early in the 2nd period on a tally from Stephen Gerke, the recipient of a nice pass from Nick Tangora to finish off a 2-on-1 break.

Unfortunately the Cardinal squad couldn’t make the lead stand up, getting themselves into penalty trouble and causing a momentum swing toward the Cavaliers.  Two Spalding power play goals in the 2nd period and another even strength tally just 7 seconds into the 3rd period, and the score was tied at 3.  An unassisted goal by Dillon Roach halfway through the 3rd period restored the Ireton lead, but the Cavaliers stormed back with one of their own just over 4 minutes later.  A flurry in the last two minutes of the game resulted in several good Cardinal scoring chances, but it wasn’t to be on this night.

Freshman goalie Jack Rodgers stopped 18 of 22 shots in his first action in net for the team.

Boys XC “Three-peats” as Catholic champs, both squads 5th at WCAC’s

Senior Liam O'Connor adds Catholic state title to Alexandria championship, above, and a third place in the prestigous WCAC championships held at Lake Fairfax during Saturday's mini-blizzard.

The Cardinals cross country teams had a busy week, running in the Catholic state championships in Norfolk on Wednesday, then braving winter weather conditions at the WCAC championships on Saturday.

Senior Liam O’Connor led the boys to their third straight Catholic state championship while winning the overall individual championship. It marked the second consecutive year Ireton has captured the individual title, with Michael Andersen winning the event last fall.  Ireton’s girls were edged by PVI for the state championship, Peninsula Catholic grabbed second in the varsity boys category.  It was the overall strong performance of the boys that made the difference however as the 4th and 5th place runners.  Bishop Ireton’s girls ran a strong state race finishing second to the Panthers of Paul VI.
At the WCAC meet on a challenging weather day, winds in the teens, temperatures dipping to the mid-30’s, all the runners were slowed over a muddy, stream-swollen course.  Good Counsel took the boys varsity championship, Gonzaga was second. O’Connell, PVI, and Ireton rounded out the top 5, DeMatha was 6th, St Johns 7th.  O’Connor again paced the Cardinals with his third place finish, Nick Manzek was 21st, Jack Leyden, 26th, Conor Pearson 35th, Steven Gottlieb 44th and Stephen Washington 47th to round out the Alexandria school’s top five finishers.
On the girls’ side , Katie Necochea earned a 9th place in 23:09, but the “pack” of Cardinals finished within a minute of each other. Alex Georgi was 27th with a time of 25:34, Mary Johnson 28th, Margaret Nealon finished 30th and Catherine Babiec 32nd rounded up the scoring in 26:03. Close behind were a pair of freshmen, Natalie Irwin and Laitlin Luzik at 26:08 and 26:44 respectively.
Gonzaga swept the boys freshmen event with Connor Burke in 12th place in a time of 23:12 to set the pace for the Cardinals. In the JV event, Good Counsel swept the top 5 positions to win, Sean Pili and John Green coming in at 21:38/21:42 to grab a 22nd and 23rd places for Bishop Ireton.
In the girls “B” meet, Aubrey Gartlan’s 25:31 was good for a third place while junior Katarina Frustaci was 9th in a time of 26:20 as the Virginia Catholic schools dominated the team results.  O’Connell won the event, PVI was second, Cardinals third with Elizabeth Seton, St Johns and Holy Cross following.

Ireton Alum Awarded by National Football Foundation

Rodriguez, class of 2007, was only the fifth player ever awarded by the NFF as a high school and college player.

Former Cardinal all state football standout and current Army senior linebacker Andrew Rodriguez has been named one of 16 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes. Selected from a pool of 127 semifinalists, Rodriguez earned a postgraduate scholarship and is now a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete.

The winner of the 2011 Campbell Trophy will be announced at the 54th Annual NFF Awards Dinner on Dec. 6 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York
City. Rodriguez is the first Army player to earn NFF Scholar-Athlete status since Shaun Castillo in 1999.

Rodriguez, chosen as one of the Black Knights’ three captains by his teammates, is back on the field this season after missing all of 2010 with a back injury. He has started six of the Army’s seven games, and ranks fourth on the team with 35 tackles. Rodriguez has accounted for a team-leading three takeaways, intercepting a pass and recovering a team-high two fumbles.

Ireton Inducts six new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame

Paul Gartlan ’77, Swim Coach Harry Sober, Deborah and Sean Sheppard (sister and brother of Mike Sheppard ’78), Sam Imhof ’81, Kerry Jozefczyk Lim ’98, and Joey Kestermann ’99 join the Bishop Ireton Hall of Fame. Inducted during Homecoming 2011, these exemplary athletes represent the best of Bishop Ireton!

The Fourth Annual Athletic Hall of Fame, held at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria, was well attended and enjoyed by all.  Starting with prayer, Fr. Al Smith, OSFS, asked everyone to raise their heads to pay tribute to God and to the athletes in the room.

Fr. Al then introduced the first inductee, Ireton swim Coach Harry Sober, who served at Ireton from 1971-1980.  He and Harry both spoke about the number of NCAA athletes that came from the swim team.  More than great athletes, though, they emphasized the camaraderie and esprit de corps that the team produced.   Paul Gartlan ‘77 and his brother, Pete Gartlan, spoke about their family and their commitment at Bishop Ireton, starting with their grandmother who graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1913 and the youngest who will be graduating in 2012.  Paul played basketball at Ireton, at Randolph Macon College and professionally in Santiago, Chile.

While Michael Sheppard ‘78 died in 2009, his sister Debra Page and brother Shawn spoke on his behalf.  Michael played football, basketball, and tennis for BI. They both indicated that their family were long time Alexandria public school attendees and couldn’t understand why Michael didn’t want to be a Titan (the mascot of TC Williams.)  They were both impressed with the education and support given to Michael in his years at Ireton and beyond and gave a heart-felt tribute to Michael and to Bishop Ireton.  Sam Imhof ‘ 81 ran track for BI and still holds the 2 mile record for the school.  Sam spoke about all the opportunities he was awarded at BI and how the authority and responsibility of being the captain of his team help him today.

KerryJozefczyk Lim ‘ 98, the only female to be inducted this year, played soccer and basketball at Ireton.  She acknowledged the great sacrifices her family made to allow her to play sports all through high school.  Joey Kestermann ’99 was grateful for his family and for the opportunities that were presented to him at Ireton from academics and sports.  Joey played football, basketball, and lacrosse and continues to play lacrosse today.

The Athletic Hall of Fame Display in Godley Gymnasium features hundreds of photos of Ireton teams of the past.  The display is evidence of Ireton’s rich sports history.

Volleyball tops Maret in three straight

Ashia Cook had  7 attack kills in the win over Maret.

Bishop Ireton’s volleyball team had a final non conference tune up as the squad heads into the final week of the WCAC regular season, dumping the Frogs of Maret 25-18, 25-17, 25-14 in Alexandria.

The Cardinals got strong play from the front line with 26 attack kills in match. Emileigh Rettig led the team with 9, Laura Hart had 6, and Ashia Cook chipped in 5.  Cook had one of her best days from the service line as well, with a team-leading 7 service aces while Ashley Cabrera added 6.

The defense was steady as well in the Maret contest with Kristen Becht recording 6 digs, Rettig added 5, while Elizabeth Schafermeier and Cook each contributed 4.

The win improved Bishop Ireton to 13-12 on the season, 6-7 in the WCAC. Next up for the redbirds is a tripleheader at Paul VI Monday. Freshmen kick off the afternoon at 4pm with a best of 3 series, as will the junior varsity about 5pm. The varsity contest will follow these two.

PVI topped the Cardinals 3-2 at Godley Gym earlier in the season in one of the more exciting matches of the year.  After winning the first two sets, PVI had to battle back in the deciding 5th game as Ireton stormed to back-to-back wins in sets three and four.

PVI stuns Cardinals at homecoming, 28-21

PVI's Thomas Tutone took this muffed snap and turned it into a 56yd TD pass in second quarter. It was that kind of day for the previously unbeaten Cardinals.

It was a great homecoming week for Bishop Ireton with alumni gatherings and a hall of fame induction. The game, featuring a winless opponent visiting the undefeated home team, followed the script, one team building a big 21-7 halftime advantage, with one glaring exception.   On this Saturday, it was a role reversal with the Panthers dominating the homecoming game in the first half in a surprising 28-21 win for Coach Gordon Lieb, his first as the PVI head coach.  Four turnovers doomed the Cardinals in front of an overflow crowd at Fannon Field.

The contest followed a familiar pattern in the Cardinals’ opening moments as the Ireton defense forced a three-and-out series from the Panthers and the Cardinals responded with their own three and punt series. Aurelian Guillaud got off a 44-yard punt that  junior Owen Costello returned 18 yards to the Panther 33. That would be the start of an 11-play, 67-yard drive, highlighted by senior quarterback Thomas Tutone’s 22-yard scamper, capped by fullback Raymond Geier’s 1-yard plunge.  It was the the beginning of a key point in the ballgame as the Panthers had burned significant time off clock already.

On the ensuing kickoff junior Justin Paige corralled the ball at the Ireton 8-yard line and dashed up field with a good return until the pigskin came loose at the Cardinal 35 and was recovered by the Panthers’ Sean O’Brien.  PVI would take 6 plays, aided by a personal foul on the Cardinals, to cover the 35 yards and when Costello plowed in from the 4, the Panthers had a 14-0 lead one play into the second quarter. So complete was the ball control of the Fairfax visitors that the high octane Ireton offense had but a mere 3 plays in the opening period.

The Cardinals got on the board on their next possession with a 15-play, 76-yard drive as junior Brandon Price-Williams carrying the ball 4 times for 20, junior quarterback PJ Zingler scampering twice for 30 yards on the drive including a 19 yard dash to the PVI 2, where senior Moses Webb would bolt to paydirt for Ireton’s first score at 14-7.

The Panthers answered immediately however, with a Tutone pass to O’Brien, sophomore Jamon Cofield rushed for 12 more to the PVI 44. The football gods were smiling on the visitors this day as Tutone fumbled the center snap, scrambled to retrieve it, then hurled a pass downfield to Nick Carpenter who was behind everyone and hot-footed it 56 yards to the goalline to push the Panthers back to a 21-7 advantage.

Bishop Ireton gained a first down on the ensuing drive before turning the ball over on downs at the PVI 16.  Costello rambled 35 yards on 3rd and 10 to get the Panthers some operating room, but a pair of back-to-back sacks by Hudson Sullivan, with a helper from Sean Boldaji on the first, stopped the drive but Ireton could not capitalize on the final opportunity of the first half.

The teams moved the ball during the third quarter but neither team could get in the end zone, though for the Panthers, the damage was being done as the clock became their ally.  The end of the quarter saw PVI again on the march, grinding up yards on the ground and clock on the scoreboard following an interception by the Panther’s cornerback Owen Costello.

It was Sean O’Brien for a 5-yard touchdown on the second play of the final quarter that scored what eventually became the winning marker.  Bishop Ireton followed with it’s 4 th turnover of the day when senior Moses Webb lost the handle on the kickoff at the Ireton 32 yardline.  The Cardinal defense stopped PVI on this drive and the redbirds took over on downs.

A pass interference call on the visitors gave Ireton a first down on the Cardinals’ 42 and Zingler went to work on engineering a comeback. He ran for 11, hit Paige for 6, then Matt McShea for 11, Webb for 11, before Webb weaved his way  the final 9 yards for the touchdown, drawing Ireton to 28-14 with 6:54 left.

To this point, Paul VI looked like the best 0-6 team in America, nearly everything was going their way.  As they moved from their own 26 on the shoulders of Sean O’Brien’s rushing, Ireton stiffened on defense, forcing a punt from the 50.  When the snap from center was fumbled, Ireton junior Michael Sampson pounced on the ball and Ireton started on the PVI 37. Ireton moved quickly deeper into Panther territory on passes to Price-Williams and Paige before the drive appeared to stall at the 22. On 4th and 5 Zingler laid a perfect pass over the shoulder of senior Merid Merid, who made a great catch while the defender was right with him to pull Ireton to 28-21 with 2:31 still left on the clock.

Ireton’s onside kick was unsuccessful and PVI took over at their own 49. After a pair of O’Brien dives for  2 yards, Tutone lost the football on 3rd and 6 and linebacker Ned Curry recovered for the Cardinals with :58 left in the contest.

Zingler quickly hit Merid on consecutive aerials for a combined 13 yards, before being sacked for a loss of 8. He misfired on his next pass, then connected with Williams-Price for 15 yards on 3rd and 18. As the clock raced toward :00 and the team scrambled to the line of scrimmage, perhaps confusion on whether the Cardinals had earned the first down may have occurred. Whatever it was, Zingler quickly spiked the ball as the stunned sideline and team realized what had happened and the ball went over on downs with only time for one final play.  Tutone took a knee and the surprising upset was in the books.

The postgame statistics confirmed the turnovers were the difference. With Bishop Ireton losing the turnover battle by a wide margin, PVI rushed the ball 52 times for 190 yards on the ground, unofficially, and were 5-7 passing for 80 yards, 270 total yards.  Ireton ran 60 plays, with PJ Zingler 20 for 35 for 120 and the Cardinals rushing the ball 25 times for 151, for a total of 271 yards.

For the Cardinals (7-1), it was a disappointing end to the week of homecoming activities as well as a 9-game winning streak and the possibility of an undefeated season. For the visiting Panthers (1-6), the roar from the locker room was audible almost to the field.  Liberty Christian dumped Hargrove Military Academy on Friday to likely ascend to the top of the coming week’s poll, while the Cardinals must regroup as they head on the road and take care of their final two opponents, Potomac School and St Mary’s Ryken.

Scoring Summary                 1          2          3          4         Final

Barber goal lifts Cardinals to a tie on Senior Day, 1-1

Senior Anna Wissler was one of 9 seniors playing their final home regular season game.

Soccer is one of those games where the score often doesn’t tell the whole story.  On senior day at Bishop Ireton, the Cardinals gave up a quick score and then controlled the play of the game almost the entire remainder of the game in a 1-1 draw with powerhouse St Johns Tuesday.

Senior Morgan Testa tallied for the Cadets with an assist from all conference classmate Maisie McCune in the 11th minute of the first half and nothing the Cardinals could do resulted in positive news on the scoreboard, though they would hold as substantial advantage in shots on goal for the game.

Good things happened for the redbirds off a set play from an Ireton corner kick with 13:13 remaining in the contest. Senior Katrina Guillou lifted a arching kick into the scrum, a header  was settled by Helena Barber and senior defender knocked the ball in the net to knot the score.

The Cardinals repeatedly pressed St Johns in the final ten minutes as Guillou, Puglise, and the Ireton attack put nearly half dozen quality shots on net. St Johns countered with thrusts into the Ireton end, but the defense kept the shots to a longer range and keeper Brenna Heaney cleaned up the box.

“We controlled the field the way we hoped to control it when we started. Our goal was off a set play that worked almost the way we draw it up.” explained Coach Gino Leon.
